I like this bill, though I'd aso like to add an early childhood education provision since it covers everything else.  Atlasian education policy should cover people from age 3 to 103! [/corny]

Construction of universities? Maybe we should just provide money to the existing state schools that are struggling with budget cuts at the moment. I remember friends of mine at UNC-Chapel Hill talking about how class sizes were increased after the recession hit because the NC state legislature cut their funding.

Class sizes could be better relieved by building newer universities and giving them a chance to develop. The number f students increases annually so the number of places they can attend should expand as well.

I also think we should add some funds for existing, established universities. It takes decades for newer schools to establish themselves, and I would love to see some state flagship universities provided with some much needed funds.

I'd like to see funding increased for subjects besides Math and Science, as well.  Those who neglect history are doomed to repeat it, after all.

I'm not sure why some people are so hesitant to offer amendments. I gave this one a little bit of extra time---Senators were saying what they would like to see---but no amendments were ever offered. Tongue

So I am bringing this to a final vote! Please vote aye, nay, or abstain.

I would not have accepted as friendly an amendment which has nothing to do with the aims of my bill.

Friendly?  No, I suggested the bill should be amended into a larger Education bill, one that doesn't ignore the Humanities.

It's a decent Bill, but I would prefer that the humanities be given more attention.

I get the intent - in order to fulfill the 'competitiveness' side - the belief is that we need to devote more attention to maths and science, like they do in China and India.

I agree with that premise, but it shouldn't be at the expense of the humanities.

I can offer an amendment, but I suppose its too late. I was away all weekend.

I think simply focusing on math and science at the expense of humanities is not a good policy. We need both to have a successful education system.

Perhaps a second Bill with a humanities focus? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm....?

I wanted both humanities and funding for existing state colleges, especially flagship state universities. I still feel we should focus on what we have as opposed to focusing on building new ones. We can do both.

I would support that.

I will support this Bill - but I would like to see some support for the humanities included somewhere... they are JUST as important.

This has enough votes to pass. Senators have 24 hours to change their votes.
