And yes, they use the Birch argument. This is the Republican Party, folks.

I remember some anti-fluoridation nutjob ran for city council in a ward next door to mine last year. He got like 1% or something.

Someone should tell them about the dangers of dihydrogen oxide in their water.  Dihydrogen oxide kills far more people each year than fluoride.

However, to be fair, with the widespread use of fluoride toothpaste, the benefits of water fluoridation are minimal.

I doubt the people behind this policy change drink water at all.  Who needs water when you have Sam's Choice Diet Cola?

Interestingly, some years ago, when I was in grad school at Cornell, the big anti-fluoridation movement in Ithaca seemed to be coming from the left.  The people who were against fluoridation were basically Naderites, and associated granola types, who thought fluoridation was some kind of corporate plot or something.  And my understanding is that Nader himself is now anti-fluoridation.

[Waits for BRTD to come in and explain how Nader is actually a right-winger.]

Actually, its a bit more complicated than the GOP taking over what is generally a swing area in presidential and statewide elections. Its become an issue of the FLAG land base being in Clearwater. You know...Scientology?

Or you could get a filter. They don't really cost that much. Much cheaper than bottled water or Mountain Dew.

Why would you even need a filter?

Got sick from tap water a few years ago and have been using a filter since. I'm sure it was a one off thing but filtered water tastes a little better too since it gets rid of the Chlorine and other crap they put in tap water these days. Not to mention most people (regardless of class backgrounds I will have you know) don't want to drink tap water so if anyone comes over, you need to have one or some Mountain Dew. Bottled water is evil though.

Fluoride nut jobs are funny, but really only a 6.5 on the crazy scale.  They're geniuses compared to the GM crop guys (7.9) or the vaccine weenies (8.1).

I see no harm in it.  But, if my community stopped putting Fluoride in the water, I wouldn't really be super-pissed.  Ultimately, I think it does little to help people's teeth - the major fight to tooth decay is going to be flossing and brushing.  Fluoride helps, but if you're not doing those things, Fluoride in the water won't save your teeth.

But no, fluoride isn't some government way of poisoning people.

I'm reading what Nader has said about fluoride and it's absolutely hysterical! Why does anyone take this complete blathering moron seriously? Like why did anyone buy his absolute garbage about the Corvair being a bad car. It's absolutely mind-boggling.

Hehe, it's always entertaining to see BRTD get all worked up over a guy who stopped being relevant a decade ago.

Most people don't take him seriously.  I'd say at least half the people who vote for him vote for him out of protest or to say "F you!" to the 2-party system.

Are there genuine issues with water quality in the U.S, or parts of it?
