Steve Symms? Both came from the intermountain west and both came from an exurban areas (Symms was from Nampa and Flake is from the East Valley). Both started out their careers in the U.S. house and Flake will probably win election as a senator in November, just as Symms was a senator for two terms. Both were also lone naysayers and often played the role as the "resident contrarian."

Yes. But "resident contrarians" and "lone naysayers" are not limited to intermountains. Justin Amash? Ron Paul after all?)))))

true, a lot of that evolved from the sort of isolationist conservatism in the rural midwest. Think of guys like Clare Hoffman in Michigan, Harold Gross in Iowa or Noah Mason of Illinois as examples.
