Looking back, I've realized that my friends and family can be quite different from yours or from each other. This is for talking about any debate moments or family and friends' political views or your own views. For instance, looking at my friends and family, I have a Liberal mom, centrist dad, liberal sister. My friends some conservatives and some liberals. I've had debates with my friends in school before. What about you?

My mom is a centrist Democrat, albeit one with a strong antipathy for liberals. Friends are largely libertarian & conservative these days. I had a good number of liberal friends in high school, but I haven't really kept up with them. Suffice it to say, liberal-bashing is a common sight for me these days.

I've gone over my family's beliefs before, so I'll just stick with the basics.

Dad: Former (though try getting him to admit it) socialist. Current fiscal conservative. Socially moderate, fiscally conservative. Gold bug. Generally apathetic on social issues; gave Cain a good look before deciding that his 9-9-9 plan was bogus. He will probably vote for Romney in the primary.

Mom: Rockefeller Republican who would *probably* be a Democrat if she cared more about politics. Pro-choice, pro-gay, anti-gun. A nice woman, if I do say so myself. She really loved Christie, but didn't want him to run in 2012, since she would be "heartbroken" if he lost. She supports Romney, and wants Cain or Christie to be Vice President.

Friend A: Economically populist; socially moderate. Generally a cynic. Does not like any current candidate running for President, and grudgingly supported McCain in 2008 until Palin. Will probably cast his first ballot for Obama, again, grudgingly.

Friend B: Big conspiracy theorist. Chem trails, man! Loves Ron Paul, but supported McCain in 2008 because he was a war hero. Generally has matured politically since then; big into groups like the Trilateral Commission and Bilderberg.

Friend C: Democrat, generally the same as Friend A. Open to supporting Romney in 2008.

Girlfriend: Generally apathetic to politics. I have never really talked to her about it. Her mom's apparently a Hillary supporter, since I noticed a sign in the back of the garage.

Mom: Takes a non-American approach to politics
Brother: Liberal
Sister: Liberal
Cousins are split between Commies and Hezbollahis.

Most of my closest friends are basically freewheeling counterculture Libertarian types. Think the types of people that lived in Silicon Valley in the 1970s-mid-1990s. The next largest clique of friends are Wall Street types, this group is overwhelmingly Asian. One clique is overwhelmingly left-liberal and peacenik hippie.  Furthermore a good amount of my friends don't really fit into American politics.

My parents are both leftist, but motivated by very different concerns (environmentalism and economic justice, respectively, though neither disagree with the other on either, and both lean socially conservative).  Extended family is where differences become apparent: on one side, evangelical fundamentalists, and on the other, impoverished Catholics.  My friends, like most people, are concerned with politics only where it directly concerns them (that is, they support welfare programs and oppose social authoritarianism).

We've done families in another thread just a few days ago, I posted there.

My friends are in their vast majority center-left, they vote SPD and Green, some vote for The Left.
I have one very old and very close friend though who is a CDU voter, he's from an agricultural family.

Me: anti-libertarian American liberal with a tendency to support third parties every once in a while.
Dad: Nixon Republican turned McGovern Democrat turned Ronald Reagan Republican turned Jon Huntsman Republican (very anti-Tea Party).
Mom: American liberal with a tendency to support third parties every once in a while.
Brother: neoconservative turned American liberal.
Friends: high school friends largely in tune with my politics.  College friends more apolitical; those that are political are to my left or are libertarian, and there's one random homeschooled Christian conservative.

I was raised by mainstream 70s Democrats.  Anti-capital punishment, anti-power projectionism, pro-socialized medicine, sympathetic to unions, etc.  And I think that describes most of my extended family as well.  Several of my uncles have served in elected office and they're all Democrats in the center of where the party was in the 70s and 80s, decidedly to the left of the center of the part in the 90s.  Don't think they changed with the times and have all been ousted from office.

I think most of my friends in high school and college were Republicans.  I remember it would come up in conversation from time to time, and I was always in a minority.  I guess I gravitated toward Republicans.  You have to remember I went to college in the 80s, heyday of Republican popularity, and everyone was Republican except me and my family.  Nowadays, there are more Democrats.  In fact, by the time I was in grad school more friends were Democrats than Republicans.

I became unaffiliated from the Democrat party about 15 years ago, and became a Republican about 8 years ago.  I suppose most of my friends/colleagues these days are Democrats, so I'm still in a minority.  I guess I'm always swimming against the stream.

Father has died, but after a lifetime of Republicanism (libertarianism really) he caught sense, agreed that the country was being destroyed by neoliberalism and inequality, and voted for Obama.
Mother never understoood the first thing about politics - simpleminded.
Brother hard core poor-hating libertarian Republican.
Most aunts and uncles moderate Democorats, their kids unknown.
