Surely the Obama campaign isn't actually airing this. If so, they must be getting pretty desperate.

I don't know about desperate but it's clearly not taking itself or the issue at hand very seriously.
Who knows though, maybe a good laugh was the entire intent.

Here's a good Romney ad from a couple days ago, hitting Biden on his middle-class comment. I'd recommend airing that over the next few days, heading into the VP debate.

The official response was as expected. from the sesame workshop site:

Sesame Workshop is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization and we do not endorse candidates or participate in political campaigns. We have approved no campaign ads, and as is our general practice, have requested that the ad be taken down.

Wow. If this is the Obama campaign's message 4 weeks before election day, I'm about ready to call this for Mitt Romney. What a stunning and pathetic collapse.

The Big Bird ad is not a real ad. It only has a small national cable buy and no swing state buy. The purpose of ads like this are to go viral and to be a topic on cable news and social media.

I saw it on a New York station. He's running this thing nationally.

Yep.

Would that mean it actually is national? Or could it be that the NY station reaches areas of PA that Obama wanted to target?

National, and I saw it on Fallon as well.  We have local affiliates for both.

Obama is running it nationally.

[Maybe he's now taking campaign advice from Sasha]

Probably hoping youth voters will pick up on it and continue spreading the Big Bird meme throughout the twitterverse. Romney should immediately run ads calling Obama desperate and out-of-touch for airing this spot.

Romney realized two new ads today that really capitalize on this debate performance. They do a pretty good job of elevating Romney while simultaneously making Obama look weak.

"Putting Jobs First"

"Helping the Middle Class"

Great Obama ad narrated by Morgan Freeman, who I'll personally take over Stacey Dash in the "black actor backing a Presidential candidate" stakes.

Challenges.

Obama really needs to run more positive ads like this, IMO. The economy is, all things considered, pretty good, and people are getting more and more optimistic by the day.

Challenges ad reminds me a bit of Reagan's "Morning in America" ad from 1984

Kind of pathetic. "few have faced so many.." really? this is what the message is now: hardest job everrrrrrr. What about others presidents and their challenges, which were certainly met with more tenacity than this guy? Campaign in a downward spiral if this is their new approach.

Edit: also still seeing the laughable big bird one everywhere, which can't be good. it's lols every time and I can't imagine that's the message you want to be championing with weeks to go. it starts so serious with criminals and then... Big bird! so many chuckles... I guess laughs and self pity are the new tactics to win.

Lately I've been seeing a lot of Obama ads late at night on TV Land.  In the summer I was seeing a number of Romney ads on Fox News.
