1996: The Year of Kemp
«

"I have decided I will enter the presidential race and beat this uniquely unqualified individual."
The race for 1996 begins as Bob Dole has taken an early huge lead over possible runner and former VP Dan Quayle, with the rest of the field trailing behind in single digits. It's a question of who will and who won't at this point, with Quayle exploring but leaning no, as are many competitors including Conservative Favorite Jack Kemp and Businessman Steve Forbes, two people who could possibly shake up the race. Pat Buchanan, viewing himself as the front-runner and heir to the throne, has already declared his intentions to run, relatively early when compared to the rest of the field. Alexander and Gramm have started to lean toward a decision, and most think they will run, but currently are not decided.
National Poll:
Majority Leader Bob Dole: 38%
Former Vice President Dan Quayle: 17%
Columnist Pat Buchanan: 9%
Congressman Jack Kemp: 6%
Businessman Steve Forbes: 5%
Governor Lamar Alexander: 3%
Senator Phil Gramm: 3%
Governor Christine Todd Whitman: 2%
Governor Pete Wilson: 2%
Senator Arlen Specter: 1%
Others: 4%
Undecided: 10%
Casey challenges Clinton!
Former Governor of Pennsylvania has decided to enter the race! Right now he is considered the underdog, but polls show that he has some good ground to gain in Iowa and South Carolina, where he could make a big show of it if he truly wanted to. Right now, nationally, he doesn't stand much of a chance.
National Poll:
Incumbent President Bill Clinton: 68%
Former Governor Robert Casey: 15%
Undecided: 17%
Iowa:
Incumbent President Bill Clinton: 49%
Former Governor Robert Casey: 21%
Undecided: 30%

Quayle will not run
As a huge blow to a lot of folks, Dan Quayle will not be running for the Presidency. His support disapates around the field, with a large chunk sending itself to Texas Senator Phil Gramm or Congressman Jack Kemp. Gramm recently announced he was running, but Kemp at this point is still fairly undecided about what he wants to do.
National Poll:
Majority Leader Bob Dole: 37%
Congressman Jack Kemp: 12%
Senator Phil Gramm: 10%
Columnist Pat Buchanan: 10%
Businessman Steve Forbes: 6%
Governor Lamar Alexander: 4%
Governor Christine Todd Whitman: 2%
Governor Pete Wilson: 2%
Senator Arlen Specter: 2%
Others: 3%
Undecided: 12%
Forbes, Gramm in!
Clinton campaign registers negatively with the public
Clinton's stock in Iowa starts to lower as the Casey campaign has been doing exceptionally well there, but he still holds a big lead in the state and a big lead nationally, so while it could be something, it may still end up in the world of Buchanan.
National Poll:
Incumbent President Bill Clinton: 69%
Former Governor Robert Casey: 17%
Undecided: 14%
Iowa:
Incumbent President Bill Clinton: 51%
Former Governor Robert Casey: 29%
Undecided: 20%

Had I been eligible to vote in 1996 (I was 3 years old during the primaries, so Dan Quayle was the only one who I could relate to) Phil Gramm would of had my support, though with Jack Kemp in the race I'd decide between the two and would have likely supported Kemp because of electability. Kemp and Gramm were both great leaders though.
