Powell claimed credit for the economic expansion during President Gore's term and made a, apparently effective, argument that Gore had done little to better the country calling Gore a "good man but a failed leader." Several scandals within the Gore Administration helped further Powell's caricature of Gore.

President Rick Santorum goes too far to the right during his term and gets challenged for the Democratic nomination. Even with record low approval ratings and a recession, Santorum manages to defeat the challenger Senator Hillary Rodham of Illinois. Businessman Donald Trump calls the two party system "failed" and says that America needs a businessman as a leader. Ron Paul agrees for the most part and runs as a libretarian. Jon Huntsman wins the Republican nomination with some difficulty.

The election goes to the newly elected House of Representatives who get to consider Santorum, Huntsman and Trump will the Senate quickly elects Senator Richard Lugar as Vice President.

By January 20, the House still cannot decide who the next President will be and Dick Lugar is inaugurated as President of the United States. Ultimately, in a legally questionable move the House votes unanimously to keep Dick Lugar on as President.

Former President Santorum, as well as businessman Donald Trump, vow to run again. Jon Huntsman says "the move is questionable legally and morally, but I Dick will make a great President." Huntsman turns down being appointed Vice President (and Lugar would resign) saying "we dont want to make this more complicated than it already is" and says he would be "interested" in running again.

James Hetfield, former lead vocalist of Metallica, who had been elected to Senate in 1998, beating out Barbara Boxer by 57-41 margin, won the Republican nomination over congresswoman Michelle Bachmann and governor Rick Perry. To balance the ticket, he selected Conservative-Libertarian senator Rand Paul of Kentucky. The Porgramme included:

President Garners two terms in office are marked by the Second World War. After defeating Nazi Germany in 1945, President Garner orders the US invasion of Japan. The invasion is deadly, but results in victory. During the initial invasion, however, the cities of Osaka, Hiroshima, and Fukushima are destroyed by Atomic Bombs. The following occupation that lasts to 1947 and several thousand more American soldiers will die of radiation poisoning in the mean time.

Vice President Wallace receives heavy opposition in his party. Senators Richard Russell Jr, of Georgia, Harry Truman, of Missouri, and Alban Barkley, of Kentucky, challenge him at the convention. After numerous ballots, Wallace clinches the nomination, but is forced to pick Russell as his running mate. The two will form a bitter relationship, which severely affects the campaign. At the Republican convention, Governor Thomas Dewey is seen as the front runner. But past nominee Wendell Willkie, Senator Henry Cabot Lodge, Governor Earl Warren, former Governor Harold Stassen, and Senator Robert Taft enter. After three ballots, Warren is nominated, and picks Stassen as his running mate, forming a united, solidly progressive ticket. The election is won by Warren by a wide margin, but South Carolina, in disgust at both nominees, defiantly votes for Strom Thurmond when the Electoral College meets, despite not winning a single vote.

Economic decline, coupled with the great expansion of entitlement programs, became unpopular with the American public and Democrats.  The conservatives finally prevailed at taking back the Democratic Party, while the GOP reverted back to its progressive roots in this election cycle.  The young Kennedy and experienced Goldwater provided a unified and balanced ticket while the perceived frontrunner throughout the election, the President, hardly lifted a finger throughout the entire campaign.  President Kennedy campaigned hard for Congressional Democrats in the midterms, helping them to take back the house and senate, solidifying conservative majorities in both chambers.  Meanwhile, a primary challenge from freshman Senator Hubert Humphrey promised a unified nation and fiscal Responsiblity, while providing for those in need.  Kennedy campaigned on tax cuts, reductions in entitlement spending, and a decrease in military adventurism while providing a strong stance against communism, capitalizing on perceived weaknesses of the Warren administration.

President Kennedy is highly popular, especially after the US victory in the Indian War (1953-1955), in which British and American troops fought back a Chinese supported Communist insurrection in India, despite heavy casualties. The Republican field against him was rather weak, with Vice President Stassen and Governor Nelson Rockefeller the only major candidates. Stassen, who pushed a Progressive and hawkish platform, alienated many moderates and the few Conservatives left in the party. In doing so, they flocked to General Eisenhower, who announced an independent campaign. Eisenhower picked Rockefeller as a running mate, and made the ballot in all 50 states. Kennedy easily was reelected, and Eisenhower announced he would never seek the White House again.

Governor Nelson Rockefeller (R-NY)/Senator Henry Cabot Lodge (R-MA) - 356 electoral votes, 52.7% of the popular vote
Vice President Barry Goldwater (D-AZ)/Governor George Wallace (D-AL) - 181 electoral votes, 46.8% of the popular vote

Nelson Rockefeller returned to the Republican fold for another run in 1960, as the popular President Kennedy wrapped up his second term. His chief rival, former VP nominee Richard Nixon, lambasted Rockefeller for his third-party run, but Rockefeller's superior campaigning and name recognition allowed him to emerge on top at a brokered convention. Nixon declined a second run at the Vice Presidency, and well-regarded Massachusetts Senator Henry Cabot Lodge was selected instead. On the Democratic side, Vice President Goldwater was nominated unanimously, but his Vice Presidential selection was a surprise. George Wallace, the populist Governor of Alabama, had been elected only two years earlier, defeating the KKK-backed candidate in this deep south state in an upset. Many credited this victory to President Kennedy's strong coattails. Wallace's charismatic, fiery style made him a campaign favorite, but he was unable to help the Goldwater campaign attain victory, as the VP's controversial policies doomed him. And Nelson Rockefeller, a member of one of the most powerful families in American history, reached the mountaintop.

President Rockefellers first term is marked by US withdrawal from India, where American, British, and French troops have been since they put down a Communist uprising in 1955. President Rockefeller also pushed through the Ecology Act of 1961, which created several new regulations on environmental pollution, and Americare in 1962, which created guaranteed health insurance for all American citizens over 70. In 1963, the controversial Civil Rights Act and the Public Utilities Act, which gave government subsidies for citizens’ water, heating, and electric bills. These changes were lambasted by Conservatives in the Democratic Party, and even some moderates in the Republican Party. Celebrity Businessman, Harland “Colonel” Sanders announced a bid for the Democratic nomination. Big names, like Senator John Kennedy (brother of former president Joseph Kennedy), and Governor George Wallace refused to run, leaving the nomination open. Sanders won the nomination handily. The Republicans renominated Rockefeller and Lodge, and they won by a landslide.

President Nelson Rockefellar's second term oversaw the complete withdrawal of American forces from India and the continued expansion of the economy. Tension between the US and China was still high but President Rockefellar had the ability to soothe the American people --that is until early 1968 where GDP growth slowed down and fears of a recession loomed with a slight uptick in inflation.

Vice President Henry Cabot Lodge, who was expected to easily secure the Republican nomination is challenged by Governor Richard Nixon of California. After an intense primary battle Lodge pulls out ahead and makes Nixon is Vice Presidential candidate.

For the Democrats, an equally intense primary battle ensues with Harland Sanders, Walter Judd, George Wallace and John F Kennedy, the son of former President Kennedy, all competing for the nomination. John F Kennedy comes out ahead after decisive primary victories and secures the nomination. He chooses Governor John Eisenhower, son of General Dwight D. Eisenhower, of Colorado to be his running mate.

The election is close but the slowing of the economy hands the election to the Democrats.
