So... wait, Goldwater's from Hawaii? And what propelled landslide Lyndon to such a massive victory?

Hawaii was a mistake. I had Hiram Fong originally hahahaha. Just being alternative. Its not an out of the question win.

1988

Governor Michael Dukakis (D-MA) / Senator Lloyd Bensten (D-TX) - 280 EV - 50.1%
Vice President George HW Bush (R-TX) / Senator Dan Quayle (R-IN) - 258 EV - 49.7%

After falling behind in the polls, Dukakis comes back, after an intense counter attack campaign,  with a small electoral victory over Vice President Bush.

2012:

President Charlie Crist / Vice President Gary Johnson - 31 Electoral Votes - 18% Popular Vote
Governor Ed Rendell / Mayor Michael Bloomberg - 252 Electoral Votes - 43% Popular Vote
Governor Mitch Daniels / Economist Bruce Bartlett - 255 Electoral Votes - 39% Popular Vote

President Crist is criticized by both sides as being "too moderate" and not being "decisive enough" to handle the crashing US economy. Crist initiatives do get through Congress but he refuses to bailout General Motors leading to the failure and liquidation of the company. By the time of November 2012 the economy is by far the number one issue with 15% of Americans unemployed and close to 30% being underemployed.

President Crist decides to run for another term and Vice President Johnson (after some public hesitation) decides to stay on.

The Republicans nominate Governor Mitch Daniels of Indiana who selects conservative economist Bruce Bartlett as his runningmate. Some doubted Bartlett's qualifications but in the end they were largely overlooked due to his expertise on the economy.

The Democrats nominate former Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell for the Presidency who selects billionaire Mayor Michael Bloomberg as his running mate.

No one wins a majority in the Electoral College, making the stock market drop even further than previously expected. Rendell/Bloomberg came in 2nd in the Electoral College but won the popular vote, while Daniels/Bartlett has a plurality of the Electoral College and lost the popular vote to Rendell.

In the House, Crist/Johnson receives no support, and they elect Governor Mitch Daniels as President. In the Senate, Mayor Michael Bloomberg is elected Vice President.

1989:

Governor Jerry Brown/Senator Sam Nunn - 54.0% of PV - 444 EV
Governor Ronald Reagan/Senator Mark Hatfield - 44. 2% of PV - 94 EV

Reagan carries Oregon but not California or Kansas.... Brown carries Kansas? 1989? You meant 1980 right

1988

Governor Michael Dukakis / Governor William J. Clinton - 315 EV - 50.1% Popular Vote
President Bob Dole / Vice President Baker - 223 EV - 49.8% Popular Vote

President Dole, generally well in his first term but what hands Governor Dukakis the election was sky rocketing health care costs in much of the mideast and west, which the Democrats were able to blame on Republican economic policies. Even though President Dole was popular, many Americans saw him as ineffective.

2008

Vice President Rudolph Giuliani of New York / Governor Thomas Ridge of Pennsylvania - 13 Electoral Votes, 39.8% Popular Vote
Former President William Jefferson Clinton/ Governor Ted Strickland of Ohio -525 Electoral Votes, 60.2% Popular Vote

President McCain's approvals drop to record lows, for him, during his second term in office due to several scandals at the cabinet level and cut backs on social programs resulting from the balanced budget amendment. After the terrorist attacks in Los Angeles, California early on in his second term that killed many, McCain argued that more robust military spending was needed. Critics argued that higher military spending in response could be temporary if the money was borrowed but instead McCain cut back on social programs including ill-fated Social Security and Medicare reform.

By the end of John McCain's second term, Lehman Brothers had collapsed, unemployment surpassed 8% and was on the rise while the number one reason for bankruptcy was once again health care. Former President Dukakis said that "McCain has undone all the good that we did in the 90s"

Vice President Giuliani was challenged by conservative Senator Jim DeMint of South Carolina in the primary. After a heated primary, Giuliani succeeded but DeMint refused to endorse Giuliani calling "basically a Democrat in disguise."

On the other side, Former President Clinton ran for a second term announcing that "we must remember what we did ten years ago, before the time of John McCain and fix what was broken by his reckless administration."

On election day, conservatives do not show up to the polls in large numbers.

1992

President Joe Biden (D-DE)/Vice President Bruce Babbitt (D-AZ) - 262 Electoral Votes - 48.7%
Governor Colin Powell (R-NY)/Senate Majority Leader Howard Baker (R-TN) - 276 Electoral Votes - 48.8%
Other - .25%

After a moderately decent first four years, popular Governor of New York Colin Powell challenges President Biden and defeats him in a close race. The map breaks the norms of the electoral college due to Powell's weaknesses in southern states and Biden's support among southern white voters.

1996

President Al Gore (D-TE) / Vice President Rick Santorum (D-PA) - 73 Electoral Votes, 31% Popular Vote
Former President Colin Powell (R-NY)/Former Vice President Howard Baker (R-TE)-465 EV, 69% of the popular vote.

President Al Gore suffers a huge defeat to former President Powell. Powell claimed credit for the economic expansion during President Gore's term and made a, apparently effective, argument that Gore had done little to better the country calling Gore a "good man but a failed leader." Several scandals within the Gore Administration helped further Powell's caricature of Gore.

2008

President Rick Santorum (D-PA) / Vice President Bob Graham (D-FL) - 159 EV 32.3% Popular Vote
Governor Jon Huntsman (R-UT) / Senator Richard Lugar (D-IN) - 234 EV - 38.5% Popular Vote
Businessman Donald Trump (I-NY) / Congressman Newt Gingrich (I-GA) - 81 EV - 22.3% Popular Vote
Congressman Ron Paul (L-TX) / Governor Gary Johnson (L-NM) - 64 EV - 6.9% Popular Vote

President Rick Santorum goes too far to the right during his term and gets challenged for the Democratic nomination. Even with record low approval ratings and a recession, Santorum manages to defeat the challenger Senator Hillary Rodham of Illinois. Businessman Donald Trump calls the two party system "failed" and says that America needs a businessman as a leader. Ron Paul agrees for the most part and runs as a libretarian. Jon Huntsman wins the Republican nomination with some difficulty.

The election goes to the newly elected House of Representatives who get to consider Santorum, Huntsman and Trump will the Senate quickly elects Senator Richard Lugar as Vice President.

By January 20, the House still cannot decide who the next President will be and Dick Lugar is inaugurated as President of the United States. Ultimately, in a legally questionable move the House votes unanimously to keep Dick Lugar on as President.

Former President Santorum, as well as businessman Donald Trump, vow to run again. Jon Huntsman says "the move is questionable legally and morally, but I Dick will make a great President." Huntsman turns down being appointed Vice President (and Lugar would resign) saying "we dont want to make this more complicated than it already is" and says he would be "interested" in running again.

1968

Vice President Henry Cabot Lodge (R-MA) / Governor Richard M. Nixon (R-CA) - 259 Electoral Votes, 48.3% Popular Vote
Senator John F. Kennedy (D-MA) / Governor John Eisenhower (D-CO) - 279 Electoral Votes, 51.7% Popular Vote

President Nelson Rockefellar's second term oversaw the complete withdrawal of American forces from India and the continued expansion of the economy. Tension between the US and China was still high but President Rockefellar had the ability to soothe the American people --that is until early 1968 where GDP growth slowed down and fears of a recession loomed with a slight uptick in inflation.

Vice President Henry Cabot Lodge, who was expected to easily secure the Republican nomination is challenged by Governor Richard Nixon of California. After an intense primary battle Lodge pulls out ahead and makes Nixon is Vice Presidential candidate.

For the Democrats, an equally intense primary battle ensues with Harland Sanders, Walter Judd, George Wallace and John F Kennedy, the son of former President Kennedy, all competing for the nomination. John F Kennedy comes out ahead after decisive primary victories and secures the nomination. He chooses Governor John Eisenhower, son of General Dwight D. Eisenhower, of Colorado to be his running mate.

The election is close but the slowing of the economy hands the election to the Democrats.
