This wonderful bill was proposed to me by another member, but I do strongly support the idea. This is about as logical as the federal government subsidizing UPS and FedEx instead of funding only the postal service.

Shouldn't the word "and" be removed from the first clause? Otherwise the bill put's at risk K-12 funding, even with the second "interprative" clause.

Yeah, that was my first thought.

It's actually a bit of a grammatical nightmare...

Also, if you want to do it properly, it should be phased withdrawal of funding... otherwise it's hyper-emotional and a bit petty. You want to remove government funding from private schools, generally, I support the idea - but you have to do it properly.

How long do you think a phase-out should take? 5 years? Less, more?

Well you'd need to allow time for schools to adjust their forward budget estimates... 5 years should be enough.

But I doubt such a time period would be acceptable.

I'm definitely open to amendments making it a more gradual process.

I myself offer an amendment to revise the language of this bill:

While I support the spirit of this bill, I do not believe that it should be as cut and dry as this.  I don't support money going to parochial education... but not all money diverted to education goes to religious education.

The school lunch program, for example, does not expressly promote a religious education... it simply feeds students.  And while many private schools cater to wealthy families, many more cater to poor families in rural areas.

Bussing, school lunches, and participation in extracurricular activities with local school districts shouldn't be forbidden.

Basically, I'd support the bill if it focused only on "tuition" but allowed secondary support in those areas I outlined above.

The amendment has passed.

I get the feeling more will be proposed, though!

I offer the following amendment to the bill.

Selective Education Act

1.  No federal monies shall be appropriated for general purpose use or covering tuition costs at privately owned and operated K-12 schools, including any school that teaches specific tenets, doctrines, or creeds of any Christian denomination or any other religious sect.

2.  Privately owned and operated K-12 schools shall be eligible for any federal appropriations to public K-12 schools for student bussing, school lunch programs, and extracurricular activities so long as such activities do not promote or teach the tenets, doctrines, or creeds of any religious sect.

No. The secular private schools aren't any more worthy of state funding.

Aye.  And secular private schools don't get special treatment.  I simply pointed out religion in case someone tries to pull the whole religious charter school thing at the local level.
