PPP surveyed 474 likely Republican primary voters in North Carolina from October 27th to 31st, and 250 usual GOP primary voters in Maine from October 28th to 31st. The margin of error for the North Carolina survey is +/-4.5%, and +/-6.2% for the Maine survey. These polls were not paid for or authorized by any campaign or political organization. PPP surveys are conducted through automated telephone interviews. PPP is a Democratic polling company, but polling expert Nate Silver of the New York Times found that its surveys in 2010 actually exhibited a slight bias toward Republican candidates.

2. Newt in second place @ NC/ third place @ ME

It's scary in a way.

Looks like Newtmentum is real. I expect he'll overtake Cain soon. The GOP is crazy.

But seriously, the GOP primary is seriously a car crash. Should Cain become the nominee and Obama be reelected, that should snap some sense into the GOP and they'll realise they can't keep acting stupid like this if they want to win. They'll be pining for Romney come November 7th, 2012.

Nope, if Cain loses the general election it'll be because he wasn't conservative enough.

Why are people surprised by Newt's showing? PPP has shown him to be stronger in their numbers than he is in anyone else's for a while now.

Because his campaign was ready to be unplugged from life support only a couple months ago. This could rival or even surpass McCain's comeback in 08 if he pulls through.

Here's the problem as I see it though: Most of the anti-Romneys so far have all been anti-establishment (yes, even Perry as far as voters view it). Gingrich is the embodiment of the establishment. Also, while he was the icon of conservatism in the 90's, I'm not sure he radiates the type of white-hot right wing cred that Bachmann, Perry and Cain have in spades.

In short, how does Newt fundamentally appeal to the Tea Party types? He'll need to become their consensus favorite in order to elevate himself to "The Anti-Romney Candidate".

Kerry's campaign was dead for a while, too.
