Sport is a distinct area of discussion that deserves a sub-board for three reasons:

1. Corral sports threads that currently are dispersed throughout the forum;

2. Make it simpler to discover the threads already on offer to minimise duplication;

3. Encourage political discussion about sports, and more analytical discussion on the topic more broadly.

It'd be great to get it up and running before the London games, if possible, but any time works.

I'd happily moderate the board, but it might be important to have a follower of North American 'sports' instead/as well Wink

Thanks for your consideration,

Hugh.

Just make it a moderator policy to move all such threads to Off-Topic, where they belong and most of them are already. We have too many subboards as is (IIRC they also eat up bandwidth?).

I think Off-Topic is fine, personally.

I support sports having it's own forum, as it makes it easier to ignore this useless BS altogether.

Yeah, after four years of being a non-disruptive poster on the forum, never considered a troublemaker, even someone who was liked well enough to be elected Atlasian President, Napoleon should be allowed to stay.

I think this is a good idea, preferably modded by someone that actually knows something (anything) about sport.

I don't believe I've once entered the Fantasy Football or Fantasy Baseball threads in Forum Community.  For all I know, they could be filled with pornography and other bannable content.

So that is where you make your bannable posts! I knew they had to be somewhere.

I've never entered those threads either...

Why should sports have a separate board? We don't do this for movies or music so why sports of all things?

I tend to agree - it's not like the Off Topic board is overflowing with sports.  In fact, the OT board goes all the way back to October 30 before going on to page 2.

I think Boss Tweed should be the moderator for the sports  board when it's establish on Atlas.

Hugh, while on the topic of sport, I'd like to see a Melbourne/AFL version of this.

Maybe I should rephrase my argument:

There are those who want sports to get it's own forum because they see sports as cool and want something so cool to have it's own forum.

I want sports to have it's own forum because it is less interesting than watching a fat balding 50 year old black man cut his toenails on the subway (and yes I've seen this) and I don't think that people like myself (who are too smart for sports) should be subjected to it when looking for posts on fat balding 50 year old black men cutting their toenails in the subway.

But if we have threads about fat balding 50 year old black men cutting their toenails in the subway that people haven't posted in in 4 days, clearly adding sports into the mix isn't hurting your ability to post about your subway fetish...

It's unnecessary to have a separate board.

Also, if having more separate boards slows down the forum (even if the number of topics would stay the same), as Dave has said, and having sports in OT isn't doing any harm (as clearly it's not since the board is not overpopulated), it's better for the site to keep it in OT.

As long as there's a hockey thread (NHL/AHL please Wink). I support this.

The AHL and ECHL really need to switch names at some point.

I demand a subforum specifically dedicated to threads on fat balding 50 year old black men cutting their toenails in the subway. And I volunteer to police moderate it.
