Turnout in MS was reported to be "very good" ...

Talk about a meaningless statement.  If the PPP was correct and it really was 45-44-11 Sunday, then I'm pretty confident:

Everyone knows whether they're pro-life or pro-choice.  And everyone who's pro-choice is a "no."  Thus, the 11% are almost entirely pro-life people who have given it some thought.  Since most "yes" voters are knee-jerk pro-life voters, the fact that the undecideds are giving it thought suggests that they will mostly break for "no."

Also, PPP noted that the undecided group was disproportionately female, black, and Democratic.

Of course, if the PPP poll is wrong, then who knows.  I won't be surprised either way.  But the one sliver of hard evidence we have says there's a good chance it fails.

The first 8 precincts to report were 64-36 Bryant and 55-45 no.  Not that it's in any way conclusive, since it's only 8 precincts, but I'd be really worried if I were the "Yes on 26" crowd.  Those are from 3 different counties.

Attala and Walthall Counties are the ones with partial reporting, and No has the lead.  Good sign, but way too early.

Harrison County, with only a third of precincts in, is tilting toward No.  Fantastic news.

I don't get why it didn't pass in MISSISSIPPI of all places.

Even in Mississippi, we don't believe in forcing 11-year-old rape victims to bear a child at the threat to their own life.  We don't believe in criminalizing miscarriages, and we don't believe that pregnant women with cancer should be denied treatment.

The votes aren't all in yet, but it's looking like Mississippians for Healthy Families did an outstanding job of getting the message out.

I won't rest easy until DeSoto comes in, although there's enough black counties with 0 precincts to offset it.  Very proud of Mississippi right now.

Are the black areas voting No?

If the PPP poll was accurate (and it looks like it underestimated No support), yes.

Harrison County, a large county on the coast that gave McCain over 60% of the vote is voting over 60% against 26.

Amite County is the first county totally in.  "Yes" ran 10 points behind McCain's mark.

It's going down hard in my home county (Madison), which voted 57% for McCain.  That makes me doubly happy.

And neither Lafayette, Forrest, nor Oktibbeha (the college counties) are in yet, and those will probably give the biggest % to No (other than Hinds, maybe)

Well, there goes a huge loss for the right to actually live. But what can you do?
Do you not see the irony of your statement?  Victims of ectopic pregnancy retain their right to live thanks to Mississippi's vote today.

You do realize this wasn't an abortion ban, right?  It was FAR beyond that.

Agree to completely disagree.

Fair enough, but had Republicans put a simple abortion ban on the ballot, with exceptions for rape/incest/life of mother, it would have passed handily.

DeSoto (!), Rankin (!!!!), Madison, Hancock, and Harrison all voted No.  That's stunning (in a good way)

I wonder what would have happened if DuPree had opposed 26.  Especially if he'd made it the focal point of his campaign.

It doesn't look like there were any No on 26 coattails in Mississippi as Dupree went down to defeat, and GOP gained seats in legislature.  In 1948 when Massachusetts voted down a law to legalize birth control in a referendum, it was the Democrats and President Truman who benefitted with the big Catholic no vote.  Kind of ironic that Dewey and the GOP were hurt by the huge anti-birth control vote then in 1948, but the parties and issues are a little different in 2011 I guess.

Dupree and almost every Democratic legislature candidate supported 26.
