The Phillies signed Jonathan Papelbon today for 4 years, $50 million with another $10 million vesting option. Are they insane? They gave up Madson at 4/44 for Papelbon at a higher price? The Madson deal would have been absurdly expensive, but this is ridiculous. Not only that, but Papelbon is an overrated, fastball-only, flyball pitcher coming into Citizens Bank Park. I feel bad for Phillies fans.

I also have a feeling they just screwed over the rest of the market with that deal.

Reportedly, Albert Pujols is meeting with the Miami Marlins.  It definitely would be different seeing Big Al in a different uniform.

Papelbon is an idiotic move...completely pointless. Especially considering the Madsen possibility. The Phillies are getting a little too Yankee-esque lately. Making huge deals for the sake of making huge deals.

Yeah, it's been made clear that you don't have to spend $200 million to win it all.  You do have to spend $100, and spend it well, if you want be competitive consistently.  But the really big spenders lose in the playoffs just as much as the moderately big spenders.

Baseball needs some collusion.

You have to remember that Madsons essentially been an 8th guy his whole career until this season  and before this season he was a terrible in the 9th. Sure Papp blew it last year but he's technically younger than Madson and has been closing longer. If you're gonna shell out the money get the more proven commodity.  Madsons wife does not like Philadelphia so I'm wondering if that eliminated the chance for a small discount as well.

The Phils are raking it in right now and packing the house. The nats and braves are younger and cheaper while the Phils core has become majorly expensive. While that doesn't justify the money for Papp it means that theyre obliged to be near 150-200 before they make critical moves.

Remember when Back to the Future said Miami would be in the World Series in 2013 or something and it was funny because there was no Miami team?

Heh.

Heh.

They're still in the National League, so they can't play the Cubs.

How about just calling them what they are - the understudies of the National League East?

How much offense could the Phillies have bought for $50 million?

Hellickson and Kimbrel are Rookies of the Year. Not surprising, but I was rooting for Trumbo. Sad

In other news, Dodgers resigned Kemp to a 8/160 deal, and Mike Matheny is the new Cardinals manager.

New CBA in place for next five years. Two wild cards will be added with a one-game play-in between the two in each league, maybe for 2012, maybe for 2013, we don't know yet. Astros officially in AL West in 2013.

I'm going to withhold judgement until I see what kind of bracket we'll have with 5 playoff teams per league. I imagine one bye, but it remains to be seen how they draw it up.  For the most part, though, I agree with you.

No, it'll be a one-game playoff between the wild cards, with the winner facing the one seed. No byes.

I don't like the playoff thing obviously nor the realignment, really, but what I'm more anxiously awaiting are the new restrictions in draft spending... supposedly some owners are PISSED

Ok, almost like the play-in games to the NCAA men's basketball tournament, only on a much smaller scale.

After all, after a 162-game season, it completely makes sense to decide a team's fate based on one game.
