Sky News is reporting that the Labour MP for Feltham and Heston in London has died at the age of 73. the latest information will be posted at

The US Election Atlas would like to pass on their condolences to his widow Anne Keen (former Lab MP for Brentford and Isleworth) and his sister in law Slvyia Heal (former Labour MP for Halesowen and Rowley Regis).

I remember seeing a photo of him from last year and thinking 'oh'. As noted by several media sources, he was actually a football scout for Middlesbrough before entering politics. RIP.

It has been the devil's own job trying to stop discussions of an electoral nature breaking out in places where this news has been broken.

Labour are to call this election for the 15 December. They are speeding up the selection process so as to choose a candidate this coming Sunday

Keen's funeral was the other day, of course. The announcement of his death was also delayed for a few days, which was interesting.
Anyways, I'll set up a proper thread (with all the usual bits and bobs) this evening, hopefully.

Labour is choosing when the election will be?
Yes, the convention is that the writ for the byelection is moved by the party who held the seat, although the Lib Dems, not Labour, moved the Oldham East & Saddleworth writ, and Belfast West was also an exception for different reasons.

Labour moved the motion today for the by-election writ to be called on the 15 December.
So potential candidates, get your £500 together sharpish, you've not got long...
