I saw an article on yahoo last night saying that the weak economy has lowered birth rates in the US.  What stood out to me politically was the decline in the hispanic birth rate per woman from 3 children per mother to 2.4.  I'm not sure what the years in question were, but this shows a movement toward US norms for a Democratic leaning demographic.
I'd guess that outside of the economic decline some other factors are at work having to do with assimilation.  As US hispanics get more educated, assimilated, intermarry etc they will gradually take on more attributes of the rest of US society, and one aspect of that is having smaller families.

Interestingly heretofore, the fertility rate increased for Hispanics after they moved from Mexico to the US, and US Hispanics had higher birth rates than Hispanics in Mexico. The fertility rate has been around 2.3 or so in Mexico for some time now. Their population explosion is coming to an end.

Well, what's the geographic breakdown on that data for Mexico? Most Mexican immigrants to the US are from southern Mexico, where I suspect birth rates are higher than in the north and center of the country.

As women have more educational and career opportunities they tend to have fewer children regardless of what country or culture they are in.
