I'd say Huntsman if the base returns to non crazy. Possibly Santorum if the base does not return to non crazy, though, he'd need to do something in the meantime.

If Huntsman runs for anything in the future it will be as A dem....if Santorum can improve and pull of a Top 3 in Iowa he will probably run again. The rest will be too old or tarnished.

Huntsman's the only one who probably could, but I think he would have to win a state to be seen as viable. Ultimately, I don't think any of the major candidates running will be contenders again in 2016 (Thank God!).

I expect that the 2016 field will be impressive enough that most of these candidates wouldn't even be invited to debates if they ran.

Nobody.

Republicans are going to believe that someone weak enough to lose to someone so 'certifiably awful' as Barack HUSSEIN Obama doesn't have a chance against someone who isn't a "Kenyan, Muslim, Marxist stooge of union goons" in an election against perhaps Andrew Cuomo or Amy Klobuchar.

(I don't believe that the President is a "Kenyan, Muslim, Marxist stooge of union goons", but such is how I perceive Republicans seeing the President).

NOTA. Most of this field (including Mitt Romney and probably Jon Huntsman after the way his campaign has been run) would be third tier nobodies in a normal primary season.

Huntsman, Romney, Perry and Santorum are the only ones that could possibly try running again.

I agree with Nik. 2016's field, assuming an Obama victory, will not include a single Baby Boomer.

Cutoff is 1960. The 50-something candidate would be Chris Christie.

I believe 64 is the generally excepted date.  So 52 years old would be the cutoff in 2016.

Huntsman, if anyone. The 2016 field will be better for Republicans if people like Christie and Rubio choose to run.

Huntsman's the only one who has a good chance of running again, though if even a few of the "heavyweights" actually run in 2016, he's just going to be at 1-2% again.

Paul would likely have run again if he wasn't so ancient already.

This is how I see the likelihood of these candidates running again.

Romney 20%
Perry 5%
Gingrich 0%
Cain   5%
Bachmann 40%
Paul   0%
Santorum   20%
Huntsman 80%

If Romney runs again in 2016 (if he either loses the general or the primary) I think the establishment GOP will do everything in their power to get him out quickly.

If Romney runs again after losing twice he becomes a perennial candidate.

I think I should add George Allen and maybe Jeb Bush as well Smiley

Doubtful Allen will go for it again. He's more useful as a mentor to the younger senators. Another person to add might be Paul Ryan.

Obama, if he loses narrowly in 2012, and the economy is worse in 2016.  Even more likely if he wins the popular vote and loses the electoral college.
