In construction we usually considered 8000 to be officially a mansion but public perception is sometimes 6000

I've never once considered a number when thinking about it.  It's like porn, it's different for everybody, but you'll know it when you see it.

I don't think about it in square feet. I'd day 3 bathrooms is a good litmus test for a single family home.

That's how I define a mansion. A family with 2 bathrooms is one thing, but 3?

We've considered putting a bathroom in our basement, it would be the third in the house.  There is no way this place is a mansion.  Maybe in Somalia or Southern California, certainly not here.

Wouldn't the value of the estate be the only criterion that makes sense?

Not necessarily. That depends too strongly on location. What you can get in North Dakota is probably not what you could get with the same money in downtown Munich.

Sure, but that is the same argument we had in the "who is rich?"-thread: No one forces you to live in a huge house in downtown Munich.

What kind of deprivation...

Not really.  As we all know the most important thing in real estate is location, location, location.

6 or more bedrooms would definitely be a mansion.  I don't know what kind of square footage that would be, though.

I still maintain 3 bathrooms for a single family is too many.

2 sure. 2 and 1 for a unit you rent out, yes. But 3?

So how much would you say a three bathroom mansion would cost on the low end?  And by low end I mean something bult in the last 15 years that isn't a run down money pit in a seedy neighborhood or in the middle of nowhere.  Please indicate what currency you are using.

Depends on how many people there are in the family, doesn't it?

I'd agree with that 6 bedrooms thing - for a single family.

Then I must say your analysis is a bit simplistic.

Depends on how many kids.  I grew up as the fourth of four kids in a five bedroom, three bathroom house which was just right for our family size.

My friend's dad built their house for $70,000 and it has 3 bathrooms.  And 3 bedrooms.  And it's about 2000 sq. feet.  Obviously not a mansion.  Why three bathrooms?  One in the master bedroom, one off the hallway for visitors (and now dad cuz mom kicked him out of the master bath Cheesy ) and one in the basement (along with a family room, bedroom, and utility/laundry room).

If the third bathroom is dedicated to visitors, then I might be willing to push back my definition to 4
