One of the sad facts about my childhood was that I didn't have a lot of old-fashioned toys. Electronic gadgets marketed as "educational" were all the rage, and my mom fell for it hook, line, and sinker. I'm no child development expert, but I think playing with real toys is hugely important. When I was very young, I had quite a collection of stuffed bears/dogs/whatever. But we got an NES, when I was five and because my dad compensated for feeling guilty about the failed family thing he constantly bought me new games, so that was the alpha and omega toy. When I got to Middle School, I got an SNES. That was hot stuff!

I loved dinosaurs as a little kid (hell, up to 7th grade, and they're still pretty boss), but the stalwart of my toybox was this large yellow Tonka truck which I always used to transport stuff.

G.I.Joe, not the wimpy little 4" figurines, but a 12" tall early 70's Adventure Team Commander with Kung Fu Grip and a pullstring to hear such classic lines as:

"We must get there before dark. Follow me"

and

"Set up Team Headquarters here"

And I was able to do exactly that as I had the Mobile Support Vehicle

Oh, and building cities and highways in the sand.  Like, I spent 1/3 of my childhood playing at the beach making complicated freeway systems with all sorts of complicated interchanges.  Or build an old road and then "reconstruct it" based on what I would remember from seeing big road construction projects.

Yeah.. I was a cool kid.
