Bush/McCain 1988?

McCain soon gained national visibility. He delivered a well-received speech at the 1988 Republican National Convention, was mentioned by the press as a short list vice-presidential running mate for Republican nominee George H. W. Bush, and was named chairman of Veterans for Bush.
What-if Bush selects Mac instead of Quayle? How it would affect 1988 and 1992, and would it help McCain in his future campaigns?

No change in the electoral victory in 1988, and the same result would have happened in 1996. McCain could have run for the nomination in 1996, but probably would have waited until 2000 and won both that and the presidency.

Heck, 2000 could see a reversed ticket of 1988! Bush/McCain! That would further continue the concept of Republicans passing the mantle from one to another. Dwight created Nixon, Nixon created Ford, Bush, and Rumsfeld. Reagan ahd run in two elections before 1980. Reagan boosts Bush. Bush creates McCain. McCain creates Bush. Who next? Will W. (or Jeb?) run in 2008 or 2012?
