Anyone else doing this?

I'm sitting in McDonalds right now (man I love that grease). I already have an XBox, got the "special" one for $200 at Walmart, plus a $50 gift card.

Now onto Christmas shopping.

I'm waiting for Asian Tuesday. Or Hispanic Thursday. Or Native American Wednesday.

Fortunately I'm old enough now that my parents don't make me go with them anymore.

A Walmart stampede, waiting in line for hours at Best Buy, a literal stampede at Sears, and several other places later, I'm back at the same McDonalds. Looks like I'm the only brave/crazy person here

America! America! God shed His grace on thee,  And crown thy good with brotherhood  From sea to shining sea.

The process is obviously appalling, but my only real problem with it is the name. In the Australian context, and I had thought in the American context, 'Black xyzday' means a day of devastating shared loss.

(Cue ad with voiceover saying 'our prices are slashed slashed SLASHED! You'll be devastated if you lose out on our deals! Buy 6 waafle irons for two dollars! Step over a man having a heart attack and spend $150 and get a furtger 10% off the sale price! Free child minding!* (*Childminding free for first ten minutes, with ten minutes free for every $100 spent in-store)"

Larger businesses usually trade in the red for most of the year.  The day after Thanksgiving is often the first point where these businesses start making a profit, and are therefore in the black.

I suppose I can understand the shopping but why do people also feel the need to go to the movies en masse on this day?

The black part is more of an accounting term.  Companies that may be in the red can get in the nice black ink with a good Black Friday.

I have a friend whose dream it is to start a brawl by cutting in line on Black Friday. I wonder if that happened...

It's a day of devastating shared loss for society, isn't it?
