Their McCain endorsement vaulted him over Romney in 2008.  But this time, Romney's probably relieved they're not going to endorse Gingrich, which would have been a problem for him.

That'd be a pretty big waste of an endorsement.

That's surprising? Why would they be endorsing a candidate who's clearly going nowhere and those NH poll number's are in the mid-single digits?

No! Endorse Gingrich! He's the only one left who can defeat the Mitten.

I would endorse Romney, and if not him, Paul or Gingrich. Those are the only three with a shot at winning NH.

That would be the dumbest move ever. Perry isn't competent enough to win the primary or the general. Maybe his staff is with raising money and such, but when he talks it usually only hurts him. And not just "ops" try all the debates or that insane New Hampshire drunken speech.

Maybe it'll help him beat Newt in NH or even get 2nd place and give him the edge for South Carolina but I'm skeptical 2nd in NH matters and still think no one should contest it.

This could be a strategic move to help divide the conservatives enough to ensure a Romney victory. Romney is probably close to his ceiling anyways, so a Perry endorsement could bring some undecideds to him that would otherwise go with Gingrich.

Perry has no chance of winning NH (he's run a bad campaign, had awful debate performances, and southern SoCons rarely do well there), and at the rate he's going, he may not even be in after Iowa.

How do you manage to ascertain that?  McCain got over 17% more votes than Romney in '08, an over five-point margin in a heavily split field...that's a lot of headwind from a newspaper endorsement.

Gave him momentum in weeks leading up to NH Primary. Romney was still ahead until very soon before

I'm just not really sure that I buy the idea of a newspaper endorsement being causally responsible for that...
