Help me out:

Nirvana mostly took Punk influence
Pearl Jam mostly took "Classic Rock" influences
Alice in Chains mostly took Metal influences

What influences did Soundgarden take?

I'd say Soundgarden was classic rock too, but in a Black Sabbath vein rather than Led Zeppelin (obv PJ's biggest influence in the early years, even if they don't admit it)

The way I always thought of it:

Soundgarden>Pearl Jam>Nirvana>Alice In Chainz

Soundgarden sounds like Black Sabbath's cocaine addicted little brother.
Pearl Jam sounds like a harder flannel wearing version of Arena Rock.
Nirvana sounds too much like punk rock (which *shocker* is kind of unattractive to a person like me).
Alice In Chainz sounds like TRYING TOO HARD heavy metal.

So yeah, that's how I look at it.

To each his own, but AiC pulled off the "metal" aspect very well.

Essentially, this:

AiC. Easily the most metal of the 'big four' of grunge.

When I still liked these bands quite a bit my order was:

1. Nirvana
2. Alice in Chains
3. Soundgarden
4. Pearl Jam

Don't really listen to any of them much anymore, although I did quite like that recent eponymous Pearl Jam album.

And I had some Mudhoney records. As influential as they might have been, they really weren't very good.

it's cute how almost every single 15 year old goes through a Nirvana phase

Is that a bad thing? Lol

No, it teaches you to appreciate some good music. Than you learn that Courtney Love killed Kurt, than you accept it and never listen to Nirvana again.

Oh my God you're my best friend.
I totally believe that theory though.
