Election Night 1994: Mid Term Elections
Good evening and welcome to election night 1994 coverage. These are the mid term elections in President Bush's second term. It is 7 o'clock on the east coast and we have some projections:

Jim Jeffords, running for another senate term from Vermont, a republican that race is too close to call at this hour. In Indiana, Richard Lugar seeking a fourth term will get it, a hold for the republicans. And in a surprise early call, we feel confident in saying that in Virgnia, Chuck Robb will infact go on to defeat republican challenger Oliver North and return to the senate. An interesting, high profile race there. Robb wins again.

When you look at that map, blue is republican, pink is democrat...yellow is too close to call. Green are states where there are senate races but the polls have not closed yet. Certainly the headline right now is that Robb wins so easily in Virgnia.

I think everything that was bad about Oliver North caught up with him and hurt him in a big way. But, he had a lot of money in that race.

The Robb campaign thought there was a chance they would win, but they are surprised by such an early projection.

Lets move on to the governors election desk. I believe we have some projections there too to tell you about.

Yes, in Vermont, Howard Dean a very popular democratic governor of that state wins again. It could maybe be by such big of a margin, it helps that democratic senate challenger there too. But, Dean wins tonight. The races in Georgia and South Carolina are too close to call at this hour.

Back with more. At 7:30 on the east coast, we have two more projections. In the senate, Robert Byrd, the long time democratic senator, wins again tonight from West Virgnia. Also, in Ohio, George Voinovich wins another term as governor there. The Ohio senate race to replace the retiring democrat there is too close to call.

8 o'clock on the east coast...more projections
It is 8 o'clock on the east coast and we do have some more projections. Joe Liberman, a Connecticut democrat, wins reelection easily to a second term tonight from Connecticut. A hold for the democrats. In Delaware, republican senate incumbent William Roth, seeking another term, it is too close to call. Yes, Roth's age and health were brought up as factors in this race. However, Roth has a strong poltical force in Delaware. We will see which side prevails tonight. For now, its undecided.

In Florida, incumbent republican senator Connie Mack wins a second term tonight. He was narrowly elected in 1988, but wins big tonight. A hold for republicans in Florida. In Maryland, Paul Sarbanes easily returned to the senate for another term. A hold for the democrats. In Massachussetts, the power house long time democratic senator, Ted Kennedy wins another term as senator defeating Mitt Romney. He was first elected in 1962.

In Michigan, Don Reigle is retiring. To replace him, its republican Spencer Abraham or democrat Bob Carr. The race is undecided at this hour, its a pivotal race if the republicas are to regain control of the senate. In Missouri, John Danforth is retiring and John Ashcroft easily wins, a hold for the republicans. In Mississippi, Trent Lott won by about seven or eight points six years ago. He wins ina  landslide tonight. Lott is returned very easily for a second term as senator.

In New Jersey, where Frank Lautenberg its thought could have a difficult time tonight winning reelection, its too close to call. He is running for his third term. In Pennsylvania, Harris Wofford, the appointed democratic senator, is seeking a full senate term. However, he will have to get by republican Rick Santorum first. That race is too close to call at this hour.

A high profile race in Tennesee, Jim Sasser, the popular democratic senator, is fighting for his political life tonight against republican challenger, surgeon Bill Frist. Sasser is thought to be a possible senate majority leader in a democratic senate, but he has to survive reelection first. Its too close to call And in Texas, Kay Bailey Hutchinson wins a senate term replacing retiring Lloyd Bentsen. A pick up for the republicans.

Those undecided races are really headline races. Sasser vs Frist being one of them. Frist had a big lead in the polls that Sasser has been trying to close, we will see if that worked tonight.

It would be a big reward for Sasser, if he won this tough reelection fight and got to be senate majority leader.

If democrats retain control...

Right. We'll see what happens. We do have another projection by the way, Lautenberg will hold in in New Jersey, winning a third term there.

People aren't reading timelines for some super suspenseful election night, least of all the Senate elections! (at least not me) I read a timeline so I can see how one person's Presidency can affect the rest of the world and mostly American politics, including policies, the economy, what wars we get into, and so on. Electing people is only half the  battle. Showing what they do and how they progress in the world of politics is the other part.

Why did some of the results change? Well, to put it simply, theres a second term republican in the white house who is relatively unpopular, not an unpopular first term democrat.

This timeline is not dead. I know what the end result will be for the 1994 election results. Election night 1994 will continue next Tuesday and the timeline will go on with 1996, 1998, and on.

Anyone want to predict the senate races that are outstanding right now?

Welcome back to election night 1994 coverage. Lets go to the governors desk and look at the 8 o'clock projections at that desk.

Yes, we have some governor projections as well as a few races that are too close to call. In a race to succeed incumbent republican governor Jim Hunt of Alabama, it is too close to call between republican Fob James Jr and democrat James Folsom Jr. This race is too close to call at this hour. In Connecticut, another race between republican John Rowland and democrat Billy Curry is also too close to call. Maybe Lieberman's margin of victory can help the democrat there. We will find out.

Here is one of the headline races. Jeb Bush, the son of incumbent President George HW Bush, is trailing democrat incumbent Lawton Chiles in a race for governor of Florida. Chiles, the democrat leads, but it is too close to call. Finally, a projection, Jim Edgar wins in Illinois. Republicans hold the state house there. In Maine, we can declare that an independent, Angus King Jr has won the state house there. A surprising early call there for that race. The Maryland governors election is too close to call there as well. Maryland, a traditional democratic state, will it elect a republican to the state house tonight? Its too close to call at this hour.

In Michigan, John Engler, the republican, easily wins there tonight. In New Hampshire, Stephen Merrill wins the state house there easily. Holding it for the republicans. Oklahoma between FrankKeathing and Jack Mildren, the democrat, is too close to call. The Pennsylvania race, between republican Tom Ridge and democrat Mark Siegel is also too close to call. Its a race to succeed retiring democrat Bob Casey sr. Its too close to call. The South Dakota race is also too close to call, between republican Janklow and democrat Beddow.

Two more southern races that are too close to call tonight. In Tennessee, republican Don Sundquist and democrat Phil Bredesen are in a race that is too close to call. Sundquist does lead in the race, but it is still by our projections too close to call. And in Texas, there are two Bushs on the ballot tonight. Here, George  W Bush, the eldest son of the President, is locked in a virtual dead heat with democrat Texas powerhouse incumbent Ann Richards in a race for the governorship. Richards seeking a second term, but she is locked in a dead heat race with George W Bush, the eldest son of the incumbent President. This race is too close to call.

Well the south looks like it could be the main battleground tonight.

Yes, but there are some big races elsewhere. Pennsylvania, Maryland, and New York. New York, Mario Cuomo, the incumbent democrat, seeking a fourth term to that office. Polls close there at 9 o'clock, coming up on the east coast. Its expected to be a close race.

Lets go back to the south. Two Bush sons running tonight.

Yes and it looks like its too close to call in both of their races.

Well some republican strength in the south there.

Well, its not strength necessarily yet. There are the big Florida and Texas races. As well as those other southern state houses still outstanding. It shows that republicans are starting to win in places where they are expected to be strong...

Hold on, we have a major projection in the senate races. This is big news. Appointed senator from Pennsylvania, Harris Wofford will survive tonight and win election to the senate in his own right. Wofford wins Pennsylvania defeating Rick Santorum

No thats fine. This is a major projection.

This was a seat that republicans thought would help them gain control of the united states senate. It has stayed with the democrats tonight according to our projections.

What did it for Wofford?

Well, he was popular and is popular with the establishment in Pennsylvania. Also, Rick Santorum seemed a little too conservative for Pennsylvania and even flip flopped on the issues some there.

Now, it would be awful handy for democrats to pick up maybe Delaware and Vermont. Those races are too close to call.

Yeah, this is not the death nail for republicans tonight. Those other two races you mentioned, Delaware and Vermont, have not been called yet. Republicans certainly need to hold those. Pennsylvania is not the death nail for republicans tonight, but certainly not a help.

Rick Santorum looses in Pennsylvania tonight as senator Wofford, the democrat, survives. Thats the headline of the hour. More to come.

It is 8:30 on the east coast and we have another projection as polls close in Arkansas. This is not a surprise. Jim Guy Tucker wins in Arkansas governor race, a hold for the democrats.

The republicans didn't expect to win that race, but Tucker had ethic problems.

He did have ethic problems as he was tied to whitewater. But, he wins anyway. Bill Clinton was retiring there.

Oh Bill Clinton, any idea what will come of him next.

Well, theres talk of another run for the presidency in 1996. Even though it was a surprise that he lost in 1992 and he even lost by a comfortable margin.

Well, look, the American people went with who they thought they could trust more in 1992. They picked George Bush over Bill Clinton in the end. But, I could see another un for the presidency from Clinton.

Yeah, I think after tonight, there are going to be a lot of candidates on both sides of the isle looking at a run for the presidency. It will be interesting.

Okay, well no other projections to tell you about right now. We will be coming back after this.

9 o'clock on the east coast
Welcome back. Its 9 o'clock on the east coast and we have some projections, as more polls close across the country. Lets begin with the senate. In Arizona, the race between republican Jon Kyl and democrat Sam Coppersmith is too close to call. Kyl was favored going into election day, but its too close to call for now. In Minnesota, between republican Rod Gramms and democrat Ann Wynia is also too close to call. A lot of races outstanding tonight, that race is to succeed a retiring republican senator.

Heres a projection. Bob Kerrey, Nebraska democratic senator, wins reelection tonight. He easily wins there. In New Mexico, Jeff Bingaman wins easily reelection tonight in New Mexico. A hold for the democrats. Another good point for the democrats is in New York, Daniel Patrick Moniyhan wins another term to the united states senate there. A very popular democrat there winning another term. A hold for the republicans, John Chaffe wins easily in Rhode Island. He holds that seat for the republicans.

More news for the democrats. Herb Kohl wins easily again in Wisconsin. Another hold for the democrats. And in Wyoming, its too close to call between republican Craig Thomas and democrat Mike Sullivan. Thomas leads in that race, but its too close to call. Olympia Snowe also wins in Maine as a republican. Its a republican pick up. She succeeds retiring democratic majority leader George Mitchell. Republicans pick up another seat tonight in Maine. And in Delaware, a race that was too close to call eariler in the evening, William Roth, the republican, wins another term to the united states senate.

Yes there are some races too close to call, but also some that we can make projections in now.

In New York, a headline race, Mario Cuomo is running for a fourth term, yes you heard it right, a fourth term to the governorship of New York. He has a very good challenger in republican state senator George Pataki. That race is said to be a dead heat at this hour. Its too close to call. Lets make some projections though. Fife Symington wins the Arizona gubernatorial election, as a republican. Roy Romer wins Colorado gubernatorial election, a hold for the democrats. Bill Graves wins in Kansas, a victory there for the republicans.

We have already called Michigan for John Engler. Arne Carlson, the republican, wins the state house in Minnesota. This is a hold for the republicans. Ben Nelson wins the governorship of Nebraska. A popular democrat there and he holds the state house for democrats. In New Mexico, Gary Johnson wins as a republican the governorship of New Mexico. Rhode Island, a race between republican Lincoln Almond and Myrth York is too close to call. In Massachussetts, a very popular republican governor there, Bill Weld is reelected tonight.

In Wisconsin, Tommy Thompson wins the Wisconsin gvernorship there. A hold for the republicans. Jim Geringer wins the Wyoming governors election. A pick up there for the republicans.

Okay, that was a lot in that batch.

Welcome back to election night 1994. We have been looking at those races still outstanding and it still seems that all of those races previously declared outstanding, are still too close to call. It is, however 10 o'clock on the east coast and we have some more projections.

In Iowa, republican Terry Branstand wins the governorship there. Thats a hold for the republicans there. Idaho between Phil Bratt and Larry Echohawk is too close to call. In Nevada, Bob Miller, the democrat, wins the state house there. Those are the governor projections at this hour.

In the senate, tonight Orin Hatch wins another term to the senate from Utah. An easy hold for the republicans. In Montana, republican incumbent Conrad Burns wins again there. Its a hold for the republicans. In North Dakota, Kent Conrad is easily reelected there. A hold for the democratic party. And in Nevada, Richard Bryan wins another term as senator from Nevada. A hold for the democrats there.

Welcome back to election night 1994 coverage. It is 11 o'clock on the east coast and we have some projections. In California, Diane Fienstien wins a senate seat there by double digits. A hold for the democrats. In Hawaii, Daniel Akaka wins very easily there. A hold for the democrats. And in Washington state, it is too close to call between republican incumbent Slade Gorton and democratic challenger Ron Sims. It is too close to call out there.

Pete Wilson wins again in California. He has been reelected as governor there, a hold for the republicans. In Oregon, John Kitzhaber wins the governorship out there. A hold for the democrats out there. The race for the governorship in Hawaii is too close to call.

Its amazing all of the senate races have had their polls close. Eight of them are still undecided.

And not only are specific races undecided, the balance of power in the senate is also outstanding.

We are coming back again.

We can declare the Alaska gubernatorial election as too close to call as polls close there. Now, all polls have closed across the country. We only await the outcomes in those races. The balance of power in congress is unknown even with all polls closed across the nation.

Eight senate races are undecided, including three that are held by the republicans going into tonight. If democrats could pick up one, maybe more, this would make it very difficult for republicans to regain control of the united states senate. These states Washington, Minnesota, and Vermont are all too close to call. All of which are held by republicans going into tonight. Two of which, Gorton and Jeffords are running for reelection. The Minnesota seat is an open race with that republican retiring, still if democrats won there, it would be a pick up for them.

The other five outstanding senate races are all with retiring democrats, I take that back, all except one. Tennesse sees incumbent democratic senator Jim Sasser trying to hold onto his seat against republican former surgeon Bill Frist. This race is still a dead heat. I think we can say that Frist does hold a narrow lead in that race, but there is still much more of the vote to be counted there it is too close to call. Frist looking for a high turnout in the eastern part of the state. While Sasser looks to Nashville, Memphis, and the western part of the state for a high turnout. Jim Sasser, incumbent democratic senator from Tennessee, fighting for his political life tonight. Polls have been closed there for five hours now. No matter what happens tonight, it can be say that Sasser put up a fight tonight, better than expected.

Oh absolutely, and he is only behind by two percent there so far tonight with 60% of the vote counted so far. He could very well win this race. It would be a great victory for him. Because he has been behind for a long time in this race. He never led in the public opinion polls at all.

We should remember its not polls that matter, but the actual votes that are counted on election day. We will continue to watch that race closely. More to come on election night 1994. Stay with us.

We hesitate to make projections. I guess we can go ahead and make two of them. In Oklahoma senate race, its another pick up for the republicans. Its a special election there and we are ready to project that republican James Inhofe must be a special person tonight winning a special election. He wins a senate seat in Oklahoma tonight.

We said we had two projections and we do. This race for control of the united states senate just got wilder. Democrats can feel a little more secure in their chances fro retaining control. Because, they will pick up a seat also in Minnesota. Ann Wynia will defeat republican Rod Grams to win a senate seat there. This is a pick up for the democrats.

That makes it tough for republicans. Now, they must win the Vermont race and every other outstanding race. If they do all of that, they will tie in the senate and vice president Dan Quayle will cast the tie breaking vote, giving control to the republicans. But, for that to happen, they have to win all of the outstanding races in the united states senate.

Its a tough road to control the united states senate for republicans. They really couldn't afford to have democrats pick up any seats. They've picked up one tonight so far.

They also didn't want for any of their own that were running for reelection to be in trouble. Look at Washington and Vermont, there you have Slade Gorton and Jim Jeffords in very tight races tonight. Both of those are still too close to call.

We can now declare a winner in the Idaho gubernatorial election. Phil Batt wins that race there.

Bill Frist Wins Tennessee Senate Election

This is a major projection. Jim Sasser will be defeated tonight loosing to republican former surgeon Bill Frist. Frist, this is his first time running for political office, but he wins by about three or four percentage points tonight. We can also go to another projection tonight. In Ohio, Mike DeWine wins picking up that seat for republicans there too.

Republicans are keeping their hopes up to retake control of the senate. Its tough for them, loosing that Minnesota race. But, Tennessee and Ohio are major wins and pick ups for the republicans.

Those are major projections for republicans tonight. Ohio and Tennessee, two states that are key in presidential elections. And, republicans are going to be proud as they ahve picked up senate seats in the two states tonight.

Lets go back to Tennessee. Jim Sasser put up a fight tonight, but it wasn't enough.

The Sasser people knew it was going to be tough, and everyone around him must have been proud for how they have kept the race close tonight.

We can declare that democrats will retain control of the house of representatives. This a surprise?

No, republicans thought that if they could take control of either house, it would be the senate.

We have another projection as Jon Kyl wins his race there in Arizona. As well as that, Zell Miller wins the governorship of the state of Georgia.
