Gingrich has made a lot of strange statements in his decades-long political career. Do you recall any with particular fondness or disdain? Do you think that any have been particularly notably or unfairly taken out of context?

"I have an enormous personal ambition. I want to shift the entire planet… I represent real power."

This is Gingrich personified. This is why Gingrich must be denied the nomination.

The Susan Smith one was absolutely despicable though.

Sir Bedevere: What makes you think she's a witch?
Peasant 3: Well, she turned me into a Newt!
Sir Bedevere: A Newt?
Peasant 3: [meekly after a long pause] ... I got better.

The first one I absolutely agree with him on, even if he's an utter hypocrite and one of the biggest social engineers currently in the running:

Some quotes I like that didnt make your list:

“The idea that a congressman would be tainted by accepting money from private industry or private sources is essentially a socialist argument.” - Newt, October 1989

“Give the park police more ammo.” ~Newt Gingrich, responding to a  reporter who asked what to do about the homeless a few days after the police shot a homeless man in front of the White House.

They're all good, but I most of all like the one about the piglets hunting the giraffes - really that's the oddest.

Newt gaffes seem really focused on his planet sized ego and his over the top hyperboles, so I picked those (although that was pretty much all of them).

I have no idea whatsoever what that pig/giraffe quote is supposed to mean. Anyone know the context of that?

My number one pick.  It's number one because for one thing it doesn't make any sense.  But most of all it's number one because it insults a wide swath of the planet.  I have plenty of friends and relatives that were born and lived in former British colonies.  Until Gingrich came along it never occurred to me that they should be "outside my comprehension."  It is truly a disgusting statement and it implies a person that is some combination of xenophobic and/or racist.

What is truly baffling is Gingrich is allegedly a history professor who get's paid to give lectures.  I wonder whether he "comprehends" my favorite anti-colonialist...

The sad thing about this thread is the title is misleading.  These aren't actually "jokes."  They are what passes for normal polite everyday conversation with Newt Gingrich.  The man really is a piece of garbage.

Is there an objection to this proposal that goes beyond making facile child slavery comparisons?

Yeah, Gingrich is going to be really popular with the women voters. Did anybody get the memo to GOP voters that more women vote than men? And that McCain only won 43% of those female voters last time?

Wow...the full quote is even better than the option in the poll.

But for me, nothing beats the secular atheist country dominated by radical Islam.

"I have an enormous personal ambition. I want to shift the entire planet… I represent real power."

Newt Gingrich is the Superman.  Uninhibited by ethics or shame or the false modesty taught to the religious that inhibits the great, free to bestride the world like a Colossus, a natural ruler...It was the coming of Gingrich that Nietsche predicted in Zarathrusta.

At the time, Al Franken wrote a great bit about how the "girls get infections after 30 days."  He asked the reader to imagine when Gingrich had to try to explain to his daughter why she just got her first "Infection."

Yeah, this is the sort of thing Gingrich dreams of becoming (his favorite movie):

They're all pretty great for various reasons, although the one RogueBeaver posted is probably the most despicable.

I enjoyed it when he recently not only claimed to have defeated Communism, but also to be solely responsible for the boom economy of the Clinton Years.

Yeah, Gingrich is excrement and an example of the very worst sort of career politician. But so was Nixon, and you elected him twice.

We Americans love our career politicians.

On topic:

“The problem isn’t too little money in political campaigns, but not enough.”

And this little gem:
“It doesn’t matter what I do. People need to hear what I have to say. There’s no one else who can say what I can say. It doesn’t matter what I live.”
