[Teddy (IDS Legislator)]

Not sure where to put this as it's not really a what-if, but, it's also not an alternate history... so I'll try here.

Anyway, this is an epic saga that is mostly sci-fi, and I'll be detailing the government of the various aliens!

July 19th, 2023, 2:23am local time. Melbourne Australia.

A local man is drunkenly admiring the Southern Cross when suddenly, a light appears. He picks up his cell and calls the police "000 Emergency, how may I direct your call" "doo, there's a UFO or Moon or Star!" After the bogan was chastised for using the emergency number for a non-emergency, he is eventually transferred to the police. Fortunately, the officer with whom he speaks decides to take a peak, and sure enough, there is something up there, right in the south of the sky.

Being a childhood astronomer, he observers this for a while before calling the local observatory. The observatory trains it's telescope on this new point of light. They call other observatories in Sydney and Perth. Throughout the following day, all southern observatories focus on this object, including the Hubble telescope. They all agree on something unexpected and shocking.

Somehow, for some reason, there is a new star, a red dwarf, only 1 light year away, due south.

Over the next few decades people would investigate this system, and eventually, ships able to reach half the speed of light were sent to explore.

They found that the star has 2 planets, one of which is an "earth analogue" being in the habitable zone, and containing similar amounts of just about everything that we have here on earth. The only difference being it's size, it is much smaller.

After significant exploration by probes and robots, eventually humans are sent to the new planet, and after careful testing, remove their helmets and prove the air is breathable. It is not long before small research colonies are set up on the new planet.

Colonization would boom after humanity discovers faster-than-light travel. By using tachyons and neutrinos, humanity is able to achieve speeds of around 12 times the speed of light, cutting travel time to the new planet down to a single month.

Colonization would continue, as humanity began to explore the world. Interesting political divisions would grow in the new colony. Cheap labour was brought in to do the grunt work. Scientists flocked to the planet for research. Those in government and administrative positions, or corporate leaders, contrasted deeply with the poor labour gruntworkers.

A report was issued that said that 93% of all goods were considered "Self Sufficient" - IE the colony produced enough to meet it's needs.

Self Sufficient was classified as meeting 80% or more of the needs of the colony.

Beyond this, 17% of goods were classified as "for export" - those that the colony produced 125% of what it consumed. These were mostly food products.

Of those products classified as not Self Sufficient, 71% were produced at 50% of consumption, and a total of 87% with at least 10% of consumption. The remainder, mostly specialized items, equipment, and knowledge based services (like computer code) are imported.

Suddenly... everyone in the colony looked up into the sky and saw the entire sky turning a bright white. Over the course of half an hour, everything became so bright that it could not be seen. Then... it vanished.

But...

...the stars had changed.

Earth was nowhere to be found.

It seems that just as quickly as this solar system appeared, it has now vanished... but to where? Where was this colony? What was going on? What force or person brought them here and why?

The first reaction of the colony was to implement the emergency plan, where all workers get Friday off, and, all households are instructed to cut consumption by 1/5th. Hence the definition of Self Sufficient. Consumption for most products and hours for most workers were restored within a fortnight, and many of the remaining restrictions were lifted within 2 months. By the end of the first year the colony had adapted, and, come to terms with the fact that they are on their own.

The government decided that this first year would be the Calendar year 1001 in the "New System", or N.S. The Calendar was also adjusted to the new planet, where years only lasted 8 months, meaning that life expectancy jumped from 85 years to 128 overnight.

Science was prioritized by the new government, but for many decades, technological development had been stalled. Quantum seemed like an unbreakable level of technology, and scientist were still attempting to count the various bosons, many decades after the search for Higgs had begun.

Spaceship technology was stuck in a rut. Speeds still limited to Cx12 (12 times light speed). Technology allowed the manipulation of quantum foam and to allow for spaceships to be encased in a "bubble" of sorts, that reduces the ship's mass to almost zero. Ships have tubes attached, interior or exterior, that "grab" on to Neutrinos and Tachyons and allow the ship to move. Due to the uneven distribution of these articles, Cx12 is an average speed, with speeds being higher when freshly leaving a system and lower when approaching one. This method uses various scientific methods including Hartman, Casmir, and Quantum effects.

Scientists are working on methods to travel faster. These include

"warp"ing space, to allow for a ship to, in effect "slide" ""down"" and thus increase it's speed.

"fold"ing space is another method that has been proposed, it would allow a ship to "jump" from place to place.

"sub" space, or an attempt to travel in the small gap between this "universe" and our neighbour.




Shielding is limited to electrified armour, though experiments are being made to create an "electric shell" around a space ship that could dissipate energy.




Weapons are fairly non-existent, due to their never having been needed. Ships have been equipped with a laser bank to help vaporize rocks in space.

It is during this time period that the government decides to make changes to the rank system of the space army and star navy, combining the two, into the Stellar Military, which is known colloquially as the "Stellatary"

The ranks are shown below
