I haven't read the article, but I firmly support Simfan's efforts to blame Lena Dunham for our society's rot.

Simfan, your standards are impossible to meet. You can't have a girl who is also a large fireplace.

1864 - August
An untimely storm prevents Canadian delegates from attending the Charlottetown conference. At the convention the idea of joining Canada is raised, but maritime delegates reject it. Maritime union is debated at length, but nothing comes of it.

1869
The British government, feareful of a lack of unity among it's North American possessions, presses the colonies into a tighter union. Among it's acts was to appoint William McDougall to head Rupert's Land. The mostly french Metis settlers were unhappy with this and began a rebellion lead by Louis Riel. The rebellion was sparked after Riel's government tried and executed Thomas Scott, and Orangeman who was pro McDougall.

The BNA colonies refused direct support to the UK over the matter, unhappy with their being forced into a tighter union. By 1871 it was clear that Riel had secured the support of those in Ruperts Land, and the UK government passed the Manitoba Act, granting Rupert's Land a degree of domestic sovereignty under the Crown.

These actions and events sparked a second conference in Charlottetown; that would this time result in the 1873 union of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island.

In 1885, Rupert's Land was sold the North-Western Territory. This came with a new agreement with the UK which clarified some disputes about the power of the colony to reject settlers. The new combined colony chose the name ᐊᐢᑮᕀ (Askîy)

Settlement in the new land was purposly slow, as the colony made a point to reject white British settlers. Other european nations were offered first choice at the land, and even this was limited. Lands east of 105 longitude remained unsettled. In addition, government was modelled on a "consensus" basis, without political parties. The only major change at this time was the 1925 purchase of Labrador from Newfoundland. By 1927, only 300,000 people lived in the new land, and there was hunger for change. There was no longer fear of the English, now that the metis and natives have established themselves within the new nation, and a new constitution was drawn up, along with other changes...

My new years resolution is to see my projects though to the finish. The problem is I have too many open at one time, so, this is locked until at least the PC disaster averted is over.
