Part of the explanation for South Carolina is also that because Democrats are unified with no primary there is no alternative, whereas the GOP primary could be divisive and the undecided Rs are choose the "undecided" option. It reminds me a lot of the Democrats in 2008 who said "we won't vote for Clinton/Obama if Clinton/Obama gets the nomination" then of course on election day that didn't really play out
