I'm sure I've had hummus that was more than a couple months after without any harm, though I wouldn't recommend it.  Key questions:
Is it unopened?
How cold is your fridge?

If it's bad, it'll be kinda 'fizzy'.  You'll know what I mean.  If not, you're good to go.

one time, as i ordered a hummus sub, the guy in line behind me wanted to say something to me. after trying in vain to get my attention by saying "hey" about half a dozen times, i finally turned to him.

he asked, proudly and with a smile, "have you ever read 'stuff white people like'?"

i responded with a terse "no" that i hoped would convey my lack of interest in whatever  asinine conversation he hoped to engage me in. despite this he continued into a tedious and barely understandable description of this silly website and what it had to say about hummus, for some reason unable that i was paying no attention to him.

it was an unfortunate day.

I'm afraid you fail that one. Stuff white people like is an awesome website. (Although inherently self-referential).

Here you go: http://stuffwhitepeoplelike.com/2008/10/27/112-hummus/

i've explored it before. i don't understand it, maybe as a consequence of my rural/working class background.

whatever the case, the content of the website was less the issue than the strange way in which this person approached me. i can't really express it... i just wanted to grab my sub and be left alone.

best before dates always remind me of the scene in All Quiet on the Western Front, when the protagonist merely peels off a part of a loaf of bread that had been eaten by rats.  we read the book in my Senior year high school literature class.  when discussing this scene I noted how I am queasy about consuming any food that is expired or even is existing on its Expiration Date.

Do you mean in the sense that you don't find it funny because you can't relate or in that you genuinely don't understand where it's coming from?

As I said, the irony is of course that stuffwhitepeoplelike.com is an example of stuff white people like. lolol and all that.

Not to mention the fact that when you've listed well over 100 things you're bound to have mentioned multiple things any random person likes.

I've been considering making a poll based off of it, though... Hmm...

just can't relate to most of it, that's all.

in other news, i decided to eat the hummus (despite the mixed opinions expressed here). no apparent problems yet, but i'll keep everyone posted.

The lethal effects of bad hummus usually sets in after about 3 weeks, just as an fyi. So you're not really out of the woods yet.

The most I did has been bacon dices, 1,5 month after the expiration date, for some reasons I hadn't open the fridge during almost all that time.

Well, aspect didn't seem bad, not the slightest bad smell, I told myself I gonna give it a try after having cooking them long enough.

I tried then, only the texture was not as good as usual, it happened 1 month ago, still alive.

Surprised myself, before I didn't care much of consumption dates, especially for milky stuffs, and especially for cheeses (not taking much risk here), except for meats, and then, been fine. Cooking is important though.

You're American though, beware, it would seem you would be part of the most fragile people on Earth when it comes to food problems. ^^. I'm a tough French, used to all kinds of cheeses, might help.

Eggs and milk would be the stuffs to which I would pay the most attention with meats and seafood, but here too, a long enough cooking can help, then it's about taste. Smell and feeling never betrayed me so far.

Hummus doesn't seem to have much risky things.

here's some vaguely related news.

housemates had another party last night, and once again some drunk guest of theirs decided to eat my food. luckily, what they stole (and apparently ate) was an open jar of yogurt that had expired well over a month ago.

Haha, that's good. You should have prepared poisonous food for them. Tongue

I almost certainly have.  plain Greek yogurt, with some granola, fruit, and honey.
