For the plural, take the French, easier (for once):

Ornithorynque/s

And the pronounciation is the same with or without the 's'.

Has as fancy names as it is fancy.

My english->French google translator works for platypuses, octopuses and octopi, but not for platypi, platypodes or octopodes.

The plural of -pus in the sense of foot is -podes. Deny it all you want, but you're just showing your incomplete grasp of the principles of English grammar.

And the plural of atlas is atlantes. Tongue

Since when did English grammar have such elevated things as principles, mon?

It has so many that they appear as exceptions to the untrained eye.

And it's greciate flummery we're concerning ourselves with here.

Heh, I suppose that's true. Somewhat different ones for written and spoken though, and there's nothing even vaguely standard about the latter; though you know all that, mind.

The German name is "Schnabeltier" - "beak animal". Sad (This got me to look for an etymological cousin of "Schnabel", and the WDS lists an English dialect term "neb", so etymologically it's the "nebdeer". Grin )

Oh, and wiktionary to the rescue.

platypus (plural: platypuses, or platypus; common, pseudo-latin: platypi; rare, pedantic: platypodes)

"Pedantic" being of course just an imprecise way of saying "correct". Evil
