yeah, turns out that it was -- alcohol tends to exacerbate the emotional impact of events for me.  case in point is the speech I gave after the Jets lost the AFC title game in January, rhetorically asking my friends, "when do I get to win a championship", noting that I'd lived approx. 30% of my life already without it and it no longer seemed a certainty.

Long time coming, of course. Not a fan (for reasons mentioned on an older thread from either earlier this year or late last year at R/P) but saying why doesn't seem entirely appropriate. What is rather appropriate, though, is the fact that this thread headed off in a controversialist direction within about five seconds of its opening. Sort of like an utterly accidental and gloriously ironic tribute.

It's sad he spent his last few years on this atheist kick, it was a complete waste of his talent. His political writing really was fantastic, whether you agreed with him or not. He had a huge impact on my life, for better or for worse, so I am going to miss him.

Seriously, Christopher Hitchens was something of a jackass, but he was terrificly entertaining and his death is a loss for talk show hosts everywhere.

My immediate reaction of course wasn't very Christian (obviously not the only one who felt that way.) Of course that had far less to do with him being a non-believer than it had to do with him being a neocon, warmongerer and general asshole.

His cancer was most likely the result of his alcoholism and smoking if anything.
