There are rather significant differences between Kim Jong-Il when he took over and Kim Jong-un today... I'm not really sure how comparable the situations are.

Also, it's been 17 years since that happened. Things change over a time period like that (even in North Korea).

North Korea claims Kim Jong Il died at 8:40 AM on Saturday on a train while on his way to an inspection.

A CCTV reporter in Pyongyang says a 200 person funeral planning committee with Kim Jong Un as its head has been set up. The funeral will be on the 28 and 29. Apparently people are sad and weeping on the streets of Pyongyang but we of course don't know the truth.

What a great opportunity for the people of North Korea. I'll have my fingers crossed for any kind of progress towards appropriate living conditions for an abused country.

Asian stock indexes are already feeling the pain. Korea's Kospi tumbled 5% after the announcement, and other East Asian markets are following suit. China's Shanghai index is already down by 2.5%, so who knows what will happen once markets reopen.

So will North Korea become less corrupt than Somalia now?

Wait, why would the death of the leader of North Korea, the most isolated country in the world, effect stocks?

They don't know how the new leadership of NK will act, all they know is that Kim never started Korean War II.

Well, there you have it. The stock market likes Kim Jong II, and hates low unemployment rates. Not much more to say there.

Hopefully North Korea will have the opportunity to reunify with the South and truly be free again, but seeing at how hardline the regime there is, it probably isn't a possibility at the moment. At least North Koreans will have the opportunity for adequate food supplies again with a new leader taking over.

Kim Jong Un is only 29, and won't have the authority to be the absolute ruler on the style of daddy or grand daddy. This leads to the logical conclusion that he will be glorified just like daddy and grand daddy while in fact being a puppet of higher powers. Jong Un can't serve as the glue like daddy and grand daddy did, and this could set the stage for civil war and foreign intervention.

2011 has been good at bumping off people...

As has been said, this is news which can be welcomed and feared in equal measure. Nobody expects "A Korean Spring". As much as we like to picture the people of North Korea as willing to rise up against the leadership, there is little chance of it happening immediately or without the potential for a massive state run "fight-back"

Uncertain times..

Heard about this on the news while out after work.  It should be an interesting week or so for international politics.

So, can we officially start considering North Korea an absolute* monarchy for all intents and purposes now?

The first thing that came to my mind was that no matter what happens now at least it can't get any worse for the North Korean people.

I actually hope there is instability on the grounds that it could hopefully lead to a free nation.

How could they be? There isn't a single free nation on Earth.

Wouldn't be surprised if he's been dead for a little while and they only just announced it to be honest.

Good riddance.

I hope 2012 is even worse than 2011 for dictators.

Wouldn't be surprised, no. Wouldn't bet on it either, though.

Fare thee well, Kim John-ded, you strange little tyrant.

Wouldn't be surprised if he's been dead for a little while and they only just announced it to be honest.

That thought crossed my mind too, but if it were the case, they could have come up with something suitably more eloquent and ludicrous than a massive heart attack on a train.
