SOPA is one of those issues that really shows you which politicians (of both parties) are part of The Problem...

Not sure what the problem with SOPA is. So I might have to actually buy CDs now? Big deal. Also, "being taken to its logical conclusion" is scaremongering. It doesn't happen. Even if it did, losing Facebook would probably be good for humanity.

I mean Romney or any other mainstream Republican or Democrat would have supported this if they were President, so the point is rather mute.

In America, you hear a lot about the American Dream and upward mobility, or that anyone can make it big if they work hard and have a good idea...

The internet is basically one of the last places that's actually true. It shouldn't be surprising that The Establishment wants to crush upward mobility* and innovation. There's only so much room at the top of the mountain, after all.

*exceptions will be made for beautiful people willing to marry into wealthy families.

This is the party of the DMCA. They'll just grumble and pretend to be outraged for a few minutes before falling in line.

It's just like Guantanemo.

If he signs it, it may be a good reason to vote for him.

Yes.

All the adolescent boys up in arms about this need to grow up. There is no inherent right to piracy. Anther person's intellectual property does not belong to you.

It is Youtube and Facebook's responsibility to ensure they are not hosting illegal content.

"There is no right to piracy" =/= "Let's give the government the right to shut down websites they don't like."

Pretty sure they can already do that...

How will I be able to watch TV shows that aren't on Hulu?  I'll obviously still support Obama, but this is one asinine bill.

Not legally.

This bill gives them the authority to selectively down sites that they find threatening, while leaving up sites that openly support them.

That's funny, I didn't know Human Rights Watch, Facebook, Google, the Wikimedia Foundation, Reporters Without Borders, and the ACLU were run by teenage boys.

Well, they have the right to voice their opinion.....even if they voice support for means that would get rid of that right.

Of course this forum is one sites that could very well be shut-down if SOPA went in to effect considering the large number of signatures (and pictures posted elsewhere) on this forum displaying copy-right material.

But then obviously copy-right is such an important right it should definatley give corporations and the government the right to censur and shut-down websites without them even being able to defend themselves against the charges.

Who cares about due process anyway? A fair legal system is overrated. As is free speach. China and Iran works just fine without them, don't they?

I'm willing to do the "lesser of two evils" thing to some extent (heck, I have a red avatar don't I?) but SOPA is just too much to make up excuses for.

I think there were will be electoral repercussions if Obama signs it. And really, what are the unions gonna do? Endorse Mitt Romney instead? Roll Eyes

It is a well-intentioned bill that has the potential to be abused. That doesn't mean it will. I've done my share of piracy and enjoyed it but I understand where these people are coming from. It's not straight theft but there are is a sizable group of people who would buy but download instead, depriving producers from their rightful profits.

That said I think it should be more specific and reworked to specifically target music and video piracy. The current legislation is too broad and vague.

Piracy is great.  You moralfriends are just too afraid of the internet police, and of the consequences never being the same.

Ahh yes, stealing from peoplel is great, because if ABC doesn't have money to make movies, I'm sure they'll just keep doing it with funding from their own pockets because seeing children smile makes them happy and that's what it's all about.

LOL! I wouldn't expect anything less from the guy who waited until his 21st birthday to drink a beer.
