Truthfully, I couldn't care less about SOPA. I download plenty of music illegally, the vast majority of which I would never buy normally. I do buy music off of iTunes if I can't find it otherwise. Yet, this really doesn't matter to me very much. I've always assumed this was a house of cards that one day would end, so I'm not terribly attached to it. It may not be stealing per se, but it's certainly copyright infringement, and to expect that the holders of these copyrights would just roll over and let you walk all over them is naive and, ultimately, completely selfish.

What I really don't like is the perpetual whining, especially from libertarians and solibs, that every attempt to enforce laws is 'fascism' or 'authoritarianism', that the government is taking over everything, and that life as we know it is somehow going to end instantly. What hyperbolic, conspiratorial tripe. People are not out to get you; you are not that special. The government will not do what you fear so much because there would be a huge backlash and politicians want more than anything to be liked, and because there simply isn't the coordinated ability and will to shut down sites like YouTube or Facebook. The government is far too divided to accomplish something like that.

Well, I dunno man, censorship is pretty bad.

Piracy I could care less about, I'm not a pirate and I don't download music or games illegally. The problem is SOPA basically just takes a carpet bombing approach of destroying and shutting down websites ala China and Syria. Because, you know, those are great nations who we should aspire to live up to, am I right guys?

I'm not opposed to this because I pirate music, I just don't understand why some people have such strong convictions against it in their personal lives. Public policy obviously should defend intellectual property but not in way that erodes due process and stifle innovation. It would increase overhead costs for companies in the name of protecting the profit margins for a much smaller sector of our economy. While I hate hyperbole (no, this bill won't shut down Facebook, conspiracy-mongers), I'd prefer to not give the government powers that trample over our civil liberties.

The trade off isn't worth it and it's blatant corporatism for Congress to create such draconian measures for the entertainment industry.

Yeah, this isn't about piracy; it's about giving the government the freedom to arbitrarily shut down whatever websites it wants.

Indeed.  As I sort of touch on in a propaganda piece I plan on distributing in my community, this tramples on everyone's civil liberties to maybe protect jobs for like 1% of the population.

I'm against piracy. I've never downloaded films/music/whatever for free. I respect artists and I believe what Inks. said: Piracy will destroy culture.

So, I won't vote for Obama because I can't. But in the case I could vote, I'd vote for him if he signed "SOPA".

So you support the ley sinde?

I don't like Sinde (Sinde and Miguel Sebastian were the only Zapatero's ministers I didn't like, I think), and that law is really unpopular here. But yes, I support the Ley Sinde.

You're a disgusting person. Or you forget this forum would be forbidden according to your new laws?

Just because they reproduce articles without asking their authors.

Shame on you.

Shame!!!

Well, it's clear you don't know what's going on here in Spain. Respected artists/actors/authors don't want to create culture, literally, anymore. I recognize I've watched some films online, and I'll probably do that again,. But it doesn't mean that it's fair if I'm doing it.
And you haven't read much about Ley Sinde. I'm sure this blog would never be forbidden. There are many lies all over the internet saying it's a "fascist" law, but hey, things haven't changed at all since the Parliament passes it. It's only a message to pirates (Spain is the country with the highest percentage of ilegal downloads in Europe, IIRC).

Are you kidding me? They said that they will put a de facto "jury" that will say if a site is according to the laws or it isn't.

They could also reach America via interpol.

All the internet against this law and you support it.

SHAME ON YOU.

SHAME ON YOUR SO-CALLED SOCIALIST PARTY THAT CREATED THIS LAW.

You don't got the GUTS to be real social democratics. Traitors, just traitors, that's the rhyme that andalusians sing.

Option 1, even though I'll be unable to vote.
Same here. SOPA is just.... words cannot describe how horrible it is.

If he signs it, it may be a good reason to vote for him.

Is the anti-piracy crowd even going to attempt to defend their views here?
Because  you too!

How did I do?

LoL, so it's clear you don't know how Sinde Law works. Please, read somethin (only a bit) about it. The jury won't decide if the site is legal or not. If people begin to report a site, a jury will be able to investigate if it's, or isn't, legal. And they can't even close it (well, they could, but they haven't done so never). It's in France where a jury can close a site if they think it's ilegal.
I think it's fair, don't you?

Oh, and AFAIK, PP also supported the law, and IU supports it now, too. So don't blame PSOE.
