Hubert Humphrey stays out of politics

Would the Dem-FL union have taken place?  If so, how much longer does it take?  What kind of affect does this have on MN politics?  If the union never takes place, is the FL going to stay around a lot longer?

I can see Gene McCarthy as the leader of the pigling FL party in the Senate. Maybe a coupl'a independent bids in the sixties/seventies/eighties? I personally think a merger or a dying out would have to happen at some point. Maybe under Mondale or McCarthy.
