Donald Trump registers as an Independent

I seem to remember a similar discussion in 2008/9 when a certain Michael Bloomberg changed from R to I (which came to nothing), can I ask why someone changing their party is such big news in the United States?

It's a big deal because it suggests he may run for President as an independent.

Of course he's not actually running for President and is merely doing it for the publicity.

Bloomberg's was actually relevant because he's the mayor of the largest city in the country and he switched party affiliation shortly before his reelection campaign. Trump is definitely just an attention whore though, yeah.
