Larry Sabato just tweeted that Bachmann, Hunstman and Santorum didn't make it to the Virginia GOP ballot.

Wow. I know Gingrich got 600 signatures in each district, you need 400. I'm sure Romney is perfectly fine. I'm guessing Perry had the funds to get on the ballot? And Paul would have enough people...idk 10,000 is a lot in a state that doesn't have focus right now by Paul.

Not surprising, given that none of these candidates has any kind of ground game nationally. Virginia's one of the harder ones to get onto - you need some large number of  signatures from each congressional district.

Guess I'll be voting Paul.

According to the Paul campaign, there was a bit of a scare in one of the districts, but they apparently were able to get enough signatures in time. They were fine in the rest of the districts, so I think he'll be on it.

Santorum couldn't even get on the ballot in his home state? Shameful.

3 people who'll have probably dropped out by then anyway? Big deal.

His support network is strong and motivated, and so I just guess on it when I said then. As it turns out yes, he is.

Was it extra hard to get onto? I heard that Gingrich had to go there this week to make sure to get the signatures, and it's his state of residence.

Virginia has the strictest ballot access requirement in the country -- 10,000 signatures, with 400 minimum from each Congressional district. I don't think any other state tops 5,000 signatures.

All of those candidates will be out of the race by then anyway, so no worries.

Unbelievable.  Sabato made an interesting point: Virginia's laws are so restrictive because that's what the Byrd Machine want fifty years ago, and the VAGOP has had no reason to change them.  I wonder if this will have any effect; Perry not being on the ballot isn't even much of an insult, but if Newt gets cut off, then there may be changes.

And an anecdote: on Monday I was in Statistics and a classmate of mine asked me to sign a Ron Paul petition.

Of course.  I dislike Paul, but not as much as I like democracy; plus, I want the opportunity to vote against him.

Gingrich made it. So a three man race. Interesting Bachmann doesn't even try...yet claims she's in it to win it. Come on -_-

I'm a little confused why candidates had such difficulty this year - there were six candidates on the ballot in 2008 .

This was news hours ago.  There's been a thread about the VAGOP primary for hours.

...what a joke. Whoever is in charge of the laws of this sort in Virginia needs to be fired.
