What did the Johnson campaign do to trash Goldwater? I've heard that it was a vicious campaign, but was there really any doubt that Johnson was going to win that election?

There was the infamous "daisy" commercial.  It aired once.

Didn't the Goldwater campaign run with the slogan "In your heart you know he's right"........the Johnson campaign cleverly turned this round to "In your guts you know he is nuts"?

You can view the 1964 ads here : http://livingroomcandidate.movingimage.us/index.php

Goldwater was unfairly labeled an extremist by LBJ and his criminal partners.

Well, Goldwater himself admitted that he was one...adding that that was no vice.

No. What he said was, "Extremism in the defence of liberty is no vice, moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue."

Yes, I know that (although I don't think I would have quoted the second half correctly). I don't think I'm reading much too much into the statement though...too much maybe, but not much too much. Smiley

Actually, it was "In your heart you know he's right, far right."

There were several variations, including "In your heart, you know he might".

I read something funny on a message board awhile ago, it went something like this...

"In 1964 they told me that if I voted for Barry Goldwater the United States would be sunk into a large scale war with no end in sight, well guess what? I voted for Goldwater and they were right!"

In 1988 Barry Goldwatere said,

"Had I listended to only the politcal cartoons and editorials in 1964, I wouldn't have voted for that Goldwater guy if I hadn't known him."

Goldwater said right after losing: (PBrunsel, it's basically the same thing, just 23 years earlier)

"If I didn't know Barry Goldwater, Id've voted against the son of a bitch!"

I think it was Art Buchwald.
