I have a feeling it'll still be used once Rick Santorum is just a footnote in political history as that guy who sort of tied the 2012 Iowa caucus.

Joke on SNL last weekend saying Santorum's clearly only running so that when his grandkids google him, something else comes up.

Probably good motivation, in all seriousness.

You know, I feel bad for anyone normal with the last name "Santorum" now.

I hope the definition outlasts the political career. That whole idea was brilliant on Savage's part.

I know people who know the term, but have no idea who he is.

Yes, which is even dumber, since 80%+ people who use "Santorum" don't even know where the slang term came from...

This is truly a vile thing happening... I saw a short film from the Bill Maher show where Dan Savage- the creator of this term- said he wanted to f--- the sh**t out of Rick Santorum and wanted to see "Santorum inside of Santorum"

That is disgusting rhetoric. Santorum has beliefs and he has children who will then have children. They have to be exposed to this embarrasment because of their father's beliefs.  You do not see Santorum finding ways to humiliate those who support gay marriage so why should gays try to humilitate him?

I do not find any of this funny and I have a pretty fine sense of humor. I am also one of the rare people my age in my area who supports gay marriage and gay adoption but I do not support this one-sided attack on the Christian right. Hell- imagine if Santorum called Savage a f****t! That is not nearly as vile as the Santorum term but would be criticized instead of applauded by the media

I feel bad for Rick Santorum and his children that they have to be forever stigmatized because Dan Savage can not respond to a political position using logic or reason, he has to respond using personal attacks.

Do you know the etymologies of most of the words you use? Doubtful. That's not how language works.

There is no "alternative meaning of santorum."

There is a delusional pathetic hack, with an unhealthy obsession with a deviant sexual perversion and an grossly inflated sense of self-worth who *thinks* they created an "alternative meaning."

I think we are getting close to the time where decent people should respond to this filth the same way that Muslims respond when someone denigrates their faith. This would quickly stop.

It would only take a few examples to end the nonsense.

Keep poking the hornet's nest, and you will feel the sting.
Spoken like a true militant theocrat.

Um.

But I do agree that the whole thing was a disgusting move on Savage's part.

Plus, this isn't a standard word as much as it is slang.

No, it won't last past this election cycle.  Well, it will be brought up occasionally by people "in the know" as a silly inside joke...just like it was a year ago.

For the record, I thought it was funny...until it caught on a bit.  It was like "skeet skeet skeet", now it's like "fo shizzle my nizzle".  White people ruin everything.

Different jokes about Santorum were made this week by some Argie comedy shows and among some of my friends. I'm willing to bet that no more than 0,1% know who Santorum is (or was) but I'm sure a pretty decent percentage know about a presidential candidate with a joke in his name Tongue

The alternate meaning, by now, is "surname of a politician". You're talking of the primary meaning.

Future generations will probably list him among "politicians with unfortunate names", until some wiseacre points out what to us is obvious.

I hope not. Dan Savage is a tragically immature individual who can't stomach people with views that differ from his - I would be disappointed to see anything from the mind of such a person validated by history.

The ability of a word to survive is based on need, of course. Anybody know off hand what a pritchel is? Probably not, because the concept is obsolete. Do we need a word for santorum, or rather can it sustain itself in conversation, as in "Dude, be more careful. You got santorum all over my new sheets!" I could see it working.
