Thread title edited to reflect the fact that the trial has begun.

Quote
A court in Norway has ordered a new psychiatric evaluation of mass killer Anders Behring Breivik after an earlier report found him legally insane.

Judge Wenche Elizabeth Arntzen said in Oslo that the new evaluation was necessary because of widespread criticism of the initial findings.

Quote
"Due to the gravity of this case, the criminal responsibility [of Breivik] must be examined again," Judge Arntzen told reporters.

Two new experts, Agnar Aspaas and Terje Toerrisen, were named to evaluate the killer's sanity.

The judge said her decision did not "imply any criticism of the initial experts", and stressed "the need to clarify the case as much as possible".

Observers have asked whether someone who is suffering from a serious mental illness could have carried out such a well-planned attack.

Last week, an expert team of four psychiatrists monitoring Breivik said they believed he was not psychotic, contradicting the findings of the psychiatrists initially appointed by the court.

Norway's mass killer Breivik declared sane

Quote
A second psychiatric evaluation of Norwegian mass killer Anders Behring Breivik has found him sane enough to face trial and a jail term.

The findings contradict a previous evaluation, published in November, that found him legally insane.

Breivik is due to stand trial on Monday over a bomb attack and shooting spree last July that killed 77 people.

Norway killer admits massacre, claims self-defense

Quote
OSLO, Norway (AP) — With a defiant closed-fist salute, a right-wing fanatic admitted Monday to a bomb-and-shooting massacre that killed 77 people in Norway but pleaded not guilty to criminal charges, saying he was acting in self-defense.

On the first day of his long-awaited trial, Anders Behring Breivik rejected the authority of the court as it sought to assign responsibility for the July 22 attacks that shocked Norway and jolted the image of terrorism in Europe.

Dressed in a dark suit and sporting a thin beard, Breivik smiled as a guard removed his handcuffs in the crowded court room. The 33-year-old then flashed his salute before shaking hands with prosecutors and court officials.

"I don't recognize Norwegian courts because you get your mandate from the Norwegian political parties who support multiculturalism," Breivik said in his first comments to the court.

...

"I admit to the acts, but not criminal guilt," he told the court, insisting he had acted in self-defense.

The key issue to be resolved during the 10-week trial is the state of Breivik's mental health, which will decide whether he is sent to prison or into psychiatric care. Anxious to prove he is not insane, Brevik will call right-wing extremists and radical Islamists to testify during the trial, to show that others also share his view of clashing civilizations.

Let the Kangaroo Court begin!

It's really quite telling (as if that were needed given the obvious) that this little charmer decided to a) give some sort of fascist salute at the start of his trial and b) broke down in tears of admiration at his own propaganda video.

Yeah, at this point it's clear his only goal is attention whoring.

Too bad Norway doesn't have the death penalty.

No, good that Norway, even when confronted by pure evil, is able to act rationally and not allow emotions to be abused in order to satisfy shortsighted, reactionary desires.

Actually, one of the lay judges was disqualified today from serving on the court because he had posted on the Internet that he'd  support the death penalty for Breivik.

One might almost think the man is a cold-hearted mass murderer. Tongue

Although insanity seems to be the only way to get him locked up indefinitely it seems more morally interesting if he ends up being declared sane. It'd certainly make it hard on those who don't believe in evil people.

I'd kill Breivik with my own hands if I had the opportunity. And I can only say the same about 2 or 3 people in the World (Kony, random talibans and Esperanza Aguirre come to my mind).

Well what do you want? He's clearly guilty, and had he committed his crime in the U.S., he would almost certainly be sentenced to death.

Not quite.  First off, not all states have the death penalty, and there would be the strong likelihood of him being found insane.  However, there would be no chance of his receiving a mere 21 year sentence for what he had done.

I don't understand why the trial is public in the first place. Doesn't he want to be publicly tried to use it as a soapbox just as Adolf did?

The desire is for a trial as normal as possible. Anyway, his own delusional statements aren't being broadcast.

Nobody should really care about that guy. Sentence him to life in prison with additional locking up after that, put him in a jail cell for 23.5 hours a day and give him bread and water and nothing else, no TV, no Internet, no books, no nothing.

Here's some common understanding of the term "Kangaroo Trial"

1. A mock court set up in violation of established legal procedure.
2. A court characterized by dishonesty or incompetence.

Is it somewhat a Kangaroo Trial because the offender is taken in the crime and admit to have commited the crime?

Then I'm misusing the phrase. What I meant was that he's obviously guilty and will be convicted as such, but he's going to do some rather crazy stuff during the trial. (like declaring self-defense, bringing in other extremists to show he's not insane, etc.)

In that case I agree.

Beside that I'm personal tired of hearing about trial, but it have served a nice purpose, Breivik look more and more like the archetypical basement dwelling loser.
