I know we all mention how weak the field is...let's just go over the field (* means the candidate at one point led a national poll)-

Former one-term governor, formerly pro-choice, pro-gay marriage, Obamacare-lite*
Former House Speaker, resigned so not to be removed by caucus*
Former US Senator who lost reelection in landslide
Former CEO of pizza chain with sexual harassment past*
3rd term Congresswoman with history of foot in mouth*
76yo Congressman, former nominee of third-party
Governor of Texas, worst debater in political history*
Former one-term governor, incumbent's appointee as Ambassador

The only person in the field who could arguably be a strong canddiate is a normal year is- Rick Perry

Rick Perry:  the longest serving governor in Texas history, and also the most invisible, uncreative governor in Texas history.

If anyone is 'Obama-lite', it's Huntsman.

I think 1996 is the best comparison if only because Huntsman's campaign reminds me of Lamar Alexander's.

I hear 96 a lot... 96 had the Senate Majority Leader, three other US Senators, the Governor of California, and more

It's amusing that really strong candidates, like Huckabee or Daniels, decided to stay away.

The only person in the field who could arguably be a strong canddiate is a normal year is- Rick Perry

And not very popular in his home state, right?

The only reason he's been in office so long is because Texas has a weak Democratic Party.

And one chance they got to unseat him, in 2006, failed to materialise because of two strong third-party candidacies.

"Weak field" is how the 1980 field was described, too.

A successful governor of California who had been in the political spotlight for almost two decades, generally not wavering on his positions and had well-known charisma. That's a weak candidate in a weak field?

Please unplug yourself from the Romney machine and please stop insulting Reagan by comparing him to Mitt Romney. Reagan is no Romney.

Yes. It's well-documented that Carter's team was pulling for Reagan because they thought he would be the easiest to beat.

What?

This man is not capable of stringing two intelligent sentences together at one time, let alone of being a competent nominee.

That is showing in the polls, big time.  The public obviously recognizes this.

My clumsy comparison of GOP candidates to primaries of both parties past -

Mitt Romney - John Kerry (duh) (D, 2004)
Newt Gingrich - Staph infection (R, 1996)
Rick Santorum - Too lazy to find a proper comparsion, so let's say Bob Dornan (R, 1996)
Rick Perry - Fred Thompson (R, 2008)
Ron Paul - Well I guess that'd be Ron Paul (L, 1988), although I'd love to say Lyndon LaRouche.
Michelle Bachmann - Dennis Kucinich (D, 2004)
Herman Cain - Gary Hart, because of, y'know. (D, 1988)
Jon Huntsman - Lamar Alexander (R, 1996)
Buddy Roemer - Jerry Brown (D, 1992)

We have 2 Mormon former governors. One is a one term governor from 5 years ago who is hurt by flip flopping and his health care plan. The was governor of the most Republican state and  is hurt by having served Obama and not being quite as insane as the others.

We have 2 former Congressmen Catholics from Loudoun County Virginia who have been out of office for several years. They are unable to vote for themselves in that state's primary. One is against all forms of birth control and lost his last election by 17 points, and the other was essentially fired from Congress.

We have a 76 year old Paleoconservative.

And then there's the idiot governor of Texas who would be the frontrunner if he wasn't so damn stupid.

Also can't get through a debate without making an embarrassing gaffe.

"Weak field" is how the 1980 field was described, too.

I myself would call 1980 quite a strong field, but that's without the benefit of looking at it through 1980 eyes. Lessee, a former two-term, nationally known Governor, a Senate Minority Leader, a 1976 Vice-Presidential nominee who had twenty years experience inside Congress, and more. In fact, I'd say the two weakest candidates were actually the guys who got second and third place in the primaries. George Bush who climbed the political ladder the way a non-contender or an 1800's politician would, and John Anderson, this random-ass liberal republican from Illinois.
