If Santorum, Perry, Gingrich, or Paul got the nomination; I think NJ would be out of contention, but given that Christie has endorsed Romney, you think that could carry well.

I actually IMHO do not think that Romney could win NJ. Christie is really unpopular right now, and he only got in with a plurality with Daggett being a left-leaning Corzine vote stealer.

But also, if it is Obama/Romney, how would the county-by-county or town-by-town be compared to 2012.

Also, what would Obama/Huntsman mean for the Garden State?Huh

Everything I've seen so far would indicate Obama would win NJ. He wouldn't win it by as much as 4 years ago but it would stay Blue. Or Red on this site.

For a little bit I thought it was possible, but the more I think about it, the more New Jersey is staying with Obama.  Romney would make inroads, but not enough to flip it.  If you move Jersey away from New York and Philadelphia, the Repubs might have a chance.

A RINO could probably defeat President Obama this year, but the GOP has largely purged them into irrelevance.

Lol, no.

But no, Romney cannot win New Jersey. Population growth is in the Republican counties and registration is moving towards Republicans, but the ceiling is 47%.

Only with Christie as his VP.

I think Romney has a decent chance in Pennsylvania, but NJ is likely out of reach.

We'll be happy to take Pennsylvania as a consolation prize.  Smiley

Sure it's possible, if Mittens wins the national election by 8 to 10 points or so. Smiley

I suspect Romney would play very well in NJ, but not well enough to make it a serious battleground.

EDIT: it's been about +8 or so Dem in the two last presidential elections. I suspect Romney would make it closer to Dem +5 but that's still not enough to make it seriously competitive.

Romney would get creamed. Paul would have a better chance, due to anti-war sentiment and disgust with the Patriot Act, other authoritarian measures, corruption, and spending.

I'd estimate that NJ is about state 38 or so to fall in a Republican landslide. So it's possible, but unlikely unless it's an election with a very weak Democrat and a strong, semi-centrist Republican.
