Good decision ?!

Well, for the Obama supporters it is, but on the other hand he'll get attacked because of the jobs that are - well, delayed.

In general I'm not opposed to pipelines (there's a huge one running through my county called TAL "Trans-Alpine-Pipeline" from the port city of Triest in Italy I think to some city in Munich where the oil gets into a refinery or whatever it is called, and there's been no spill so far in about 50 years and it's running through the National Park Hohe Tauern)

So, if they can find another route that poses absolutely no danger to the water ressources and they make sure that there will be no spills, I'd favor the project.

let see:  Obama gives billions to fund noneconomically viable businesses, yet stops economically viable business from doing business.

plus:  forcing the Canadians to build a pipeline to the Pacific to sell their oil to China (since Obama is obviously saying the US doesn't want the Canadian oil) ain't gonna look very smart if Iran closes the Strait of Hormuz

Also, why is the thing called Keystone XL pipeline, if it's not even running through PA ?

worship him for every shade of difference, go on.  civilization is marching off the cliff, the stakes you speak of are small.  of course a thinking man can hash out a reasonable case, in a vacuum, for supporting Obama2012; but if we'd taken the other path 20 or 30 years ago, and stood up to Clinton, for example, perhaps intelligent life as an evolutionary error, doomed to self-destruction, would not be a truism.

A thinking man doesn't try to be the harbinger of death.  A thinking man survives.

A manic nihilist on the other hand, washes with emo soap.

survival never goes out of style, correct, but it's always been decided on grounds far more natural than 'thought'.

I'm usually as pro-Obama as they come, but I so don't get this. We need oil. Granted, it's a finite resource and not a permanent solution to our energy needs, but it would be very helpful for right now. And given how much of the price of oil is speculation, it would be most excellent to depress the price and screw Venezuela, Russia, Saudi Arabia, et al. I don't know what they Dems are thinking on this one.

I agree... environmentalists need to pick their fights better.  We're going to be relying on oil for a while yet.  It might as well be American and Canadian oil.  Let China fight for the scraps from unstable nations.

But environmentalists are naturally idealists.  And they suffer from nirvana syndrome.  And they love to team up with the NIMBYs to stop, block, and obstruct just as bad as senate Republicans.

Obama's creating jobs in China and Canada rather than letting private sector business create jobs in the United States.

Lol.

This line of attack regarding jobs is disingenuous.  How many permanent jobs would this create?  If we're set on this type of thing, why haven't we seen an agreement regarding infrastructure upgrades yet?  The American Jobs Act was full of that stuff and the GOP wouldn't hear any of it.

Excellent.

And yes, I'm one of those "anti-Canadian radical socialist ideologues" who opposes Keystone and Northern Gateway, as my dear Minister of Natural Resources would say.

Agreed. We need that oil, even if we were to somehow accelerate renewable energy projects. We would still need oil for many years to keep the economy running. Bad move by Obama.

According to independent economic studies, the US jobs associated with this project are a rounding error.  Obama needs to give the greens something to turn out for after he completely dropped the ball on cap and trade.  If there's any political subtext here, it's a play to blunt Romney's moderate appeal in the CO/VA/NC inner suburbs...

Wouldn't the industry served by the pipeline just destroy Canada, not the US?  I mean, generally this industry (fracking or whatever its called), only destroys the states and provinces where it takes place, such as the Dakotas, Wyoming, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and the various Western provinces of Canada.

Its not as if the pipeline would destroy the areas it runs through or the cities it feeds.  So the environmentalists wanted to stop it to preserve Canada from destruction?

In any case as the destroyer jmfcst points out, Canada will still be destroyed anyway by the very same industry, just served by a different pipeline in a different route.

But ultimately the reason I'm not an environmentalists is I wouldn't mind a bit if the world doesn't outlast me.

Apparently a lot of this would involve use of eminent domain. Which makes me uncomfortable, we definitely should be building a pipeline but I don't want land owners getting ripped off.

The GOP ensured this by demanding the final decision on it be sped up. This has just been a political football by both Obama and the GOP.  It's disgusting really.

I thought this was going to be the news that Obama had finally finished the pandering job and rejected Keynesian economics.

"The Republican Speaker of the House of Representatives, John Boehner, criticised the Obama administration for failing to give the green light to a project that would have created "hundreds of thousands of jobs"."

"The oil industry has estimated the project would create 20,000 jobs, although the state department and some independent studies suggest a lower figure of 6,000 jobs."

Maybe it's an extension of supply side economics - by creating 6,000 jobs, this pipeline will allow several hundred thousand other people to also find employment.

It would have created few jobs, run into numerous eminent domain issues, and ran significant risk to the Ogallala Aquifer.
