In 1972 Shirley Chisholm became the first black woman to run for President? How well could she had done against Nixon in 1972?

She would have done a lot better in minority neighborhoods than McGovern, (remember, Nixon won the Bronx) and unlike McGovern, would not hand Nixon the election on silver platter.

She might have called for a Presidential debate, which would have been a good way win over some support...

Popular Vote
Nixon 56%
Chisholm 42%
Others 2%

Electoral Vote
Nixon 309
Chisholm 229

To be honest with you, I never trusted Nixon and I'd be tempted to vote for Chisholm as a protest.

I like tough people.

I'd definitely vote Chisholm, but Nixon would win easily.

King:

There's no way she would have won California at that time, as it was a much more Republican state then than now.

Nixon was from there too.  Smiley

Given the nature of the campaign and the times, I can't see her doing much better in the Electoral College.  Nixon won so decisively that year that even a 10% swing would have garnered the Dems only an extra 29 EV's.

What gets me is that she won NJ in the primary.  She might have had some Northeastern support, NY and NJ maybe.

Chisholm/Nixon

She would win about the same electoral votes as McGovern, but she would have a popular vote of about 40-43% because she would have more votes in the South.  A state like Mississippi would be won by Nixon by about 15 points.

Nixon carried Mississippi with 78 percent, his best showing anywhere. Running against a black woman would only energize whites even more and result in at least an 80 percent victory for him in the state, and around 65 percent nationally. He may have even carried Massachussetts- Boston was a hotbed of racial unrest at that time.

Nixon only won it 55-41, one of his worst showings in the nation Wink

What I find ironic is Nixon only won my county by 9 points. He had won it by almost 17 points in 1960.

Nixon would have won a landslide o/c, but it wouldn't have been as humiliating as what happend in real life.

Chisholm would probably have won NY

I think Nixon got a lot of Black votes as well - Blacks were voting by 1972, even in the Deep South. And Chisholm won the Mississippi and Louisiana primaries IIRC.
