Wisconsin was an error, I'll change it later today. But, Idaho was already in the democratic column on election night.

Despite a strong economy throughout his second term, the democrats found themselves behind in the 1920 presidential campaign. Despite some hope that he would run again, President Marshall announced in the middle of 1919 that he would not seek another term as President.
The democrats nominated vice president Alton Parker for President and Ohio governor James Cox for his running mate. Ohio senator Warren Harding was nominated for President after a deadlocked convention. Harding went on to select former major general Leonard Wood as his running mate.
The democrats say its another interesting election where the democrats prevail. The republicans, on the other hand, say they can win but not only win, they claim they will reshape the electoral map. Election night coverage begins next.

Reshape the electoral map? Might begin in the south
Good evening and welcome to election night 1920 coverage. This is a race between vice president Alton Parker and Ohio senator Warren Harding. Lets turn to our panel first tonight. Do the democrats have a chance tonight?
Well its interesting. Democrats say they have a chance, some believe they do. The economy is booming and President Marshall is retiring as a popular two term incumbent. But thats just it, hes a two term incumbent retiring. Anything negative about the democratic administration, the democratic nominee this year vice president Alton Parker is tied to the administration.
President Marshall has been campaigning with him. Despite being behind in public polls, they believe they have a chance.
Do you think the President regrets not running again?
If senator Harding wins, then yes probably. Especially if vice president Parker comes even remotely close. However, if the vice president wins, the President might say, I wish it was me, but I'm proud of my vice president.
Okay, it is 7 o'clock on the east coast and we have some interesting projections and developments to tell you about.
First in Indiana, this was a state where President Marshall has carried it solidly the past two elections. Will it stay with the democrats again tonight? We don't know, its undecided in Indiana at this hour.
In Georgia, good news for the democrats, they win here rather easily. Vice President Parker wins in Georgia.
Alton Parker Wins Georgia
Diddo in South Carolina, probably the strongest state for democrats nationally does it again tonight. Parker wins in South Carolina.
Alton Parker Wins South Carolina
In Kentucky, a close race there in the vote count we have so far tonight. Its too close to call in Kentucky.
In Vermont, good news for senator Harding. Senator Harding wins in Vermont.
Warren Harding Wins Vermont
In Virgnia, this a surprise for both sides, Virgnia is too early to call at this hour. Note the difference, this means that we don't have enough of a raw vote count to even begin to determine who has carried this state. Virgnia is too early to call at this hour.
In Florida, Florida surprisingly is too close to call. Florida too close to call.
Lets look at this electoral map at this hour.
Harding: 4 Parker: 23 266 needed to win
Lets turn to our panel. Are the democrats talking at this hour?
It surprising, democrats are expected to do well in the south, and a few states are outstanding. Thats an amazing thing at this hour.
Could senator Harding carry any southern states?
It would be a surprise, and I would say probably not. Certainly not good news for the vice president at this hour.
Were coming back, stay with us.

In Ohio, the home state of senator Harding and governor Cox for that matter. Ohio goes for Senator Harding tonight. Harding wins in Ohio.
Warren Harding Wins Ohio
In West Virgnia, this state has voted democrat the last two times. Will it do so again tonight? We don't know, its undecided.
And in Virgnia, a state previously too early to call, we can declare it now for the vice president. Alton Parker wins in Virgnia.
Alton Parker Wins Virgnia
Harding: 28 Parker: 35 266 needed to win
Electoral vote suddenly becomes close, we'll be back. Stay with us.

Welcome back, it is 8 o'clock on the east coast and fifteen states have closed their polls across the country. We have some projections, lets look them over.
First in Alabama, Alabama is too early to call at this hour. Again like Virgnia, this doesn't mean that its too close to call, this means that we don't have enough votes at this hour to determine what is going to happen in Alabama tonight. Alabama is too early to call at this hour.
In Connecticut, this is big news tonight. Connecticut, the traditional presidential belwhether state, goes to vice president Parker tonight. Parker wins in Connecticut.
Alton Parker Wins Connecticut
However, making it an interesting night, Delaware goes for Harding. Senator Harding wins in Delaware.

Alton Parker Wins Missouri

Stand by, we are ready to project that the state of Illinois, Illinois will be going to vice president Parker tonight. Alton Parker will carry the state of Illinois for the democrats tonight. Another weird development tonight. Oklahoma voting for a republican for what is probably the first time and Illinois voting for a demcorat for what is probably the first time. Vice President Parker wins Illinois.
Alton Parker Wins Illinois
Harding: 85 Parker: 111 266 needed to win
Hold on we have more coming in now, first in West Virgnia. West Virgnia will go also for the vice president tonight. Alton Parker wins in West Virgnia.
Alton Parker Wins West Virgnia
And in Massachussetts, this is a surprise. Governor Cooldige promised to pull this state in for the senator, but it is not to be. In another surprise, vice president Parker wins in Massachussetts tonight.
Alton Parker Wins Massachussetts
Now lets look at the electoral map.
Harding: 85 Parker: 137 266 needed to win

Welcome back, as can be seen, were covering detailed election results in the race for the presidency tonight, but not the congress. We are going to show you an update on what the race for the control of the senate looks like. Now going into tonight, republicans held 40 senate seats, democrats held 56, the prohibition party held 1, and the socialist party held 1. 49 seats are needed to officially control the senate. Republicans need a net gain of nine seats to control the senate, and so far, well they have a net gain of one seat.
Even though Illinois has gone democrat in the presidential race according to our projections, the republicans picked up a senate seat in the state of Illinois. Lets look at the senate map at this hour.
Republican: 36 Democrat: 37 Prohibition: 1 Socialist: 1 49 needed for absolute majority
Thats the way that it looks tonight. Even though democrats seem to be having trouble in the south when it comes to the presidential race, democrats are easily holding their seats there in the united states senate. Vermont, Pennsylvania those were expected projections for republicans. As we said before, the interesting thing so far is that Illinois, the home of Abraham Lincoln the first republican President, voted democrat for the presidency but republicans picked up the senate seat there tonight. Thats certainly an eye catching development. The race in Missouri is undecided, but a democrat incumbent leads there. Theres obviously a reasonably long way to go. Lets say one other thing. Senator Gallinger who narrowly lost the presidency four years ago, hes in another tough battle for reelection to the senate. If he wins reelction to the senate tonight, and the republicans, if they were to gain nine seats across the country, Gallinger would become senate majority leader. But, a lot has to happen for that to occur.
Were coming back, with the election polls closing at the 8:30 hour. Stay with us.

Welcome back, it is nine o'clock on the east coast and we have some big projections at this hour. More states have had their polls closed and as I said, we have some projections. Lets look them over.
In Arizona, a state that usually votes democrat, will it do so tonight? We don't know, its undecided.
In Colorado, this might come as a surprise to some. Senator Harding wins in Colorado. Colorado for Harding.
Warren Harding Wins Colorado
Kansas also goes easily republican tonight. Harding wins Kansas.
Warren Harding Wins Kansas
In Louisiana, Louisiana can be declared now for the vice president.
Alton Parker Wins Louisiana
In Michigan, a reliably republican state is so again tonight. Senator Harding wins Michigan.
Warren Harding Wins Michigan
In Minnesota, the state usually republican is undecided at this hour. Undecided in Minnesota.
Nebraska is undecided at this hour. Nebraska is undecided.
Diddo in New Mexico, undecided in New Mexico.
In New York, a big state and the home state of the vice president. New York is undecided at this hour.
In Rhode Island, joins Massachussetts tonight and votes for the vice president. Alton Parker wins in Rhode Island.
Alton Parker Wins Rhode Island
We can say at this hour that South Dakota is undecided.
However in Texas, Texas goes for Parker tonight. A big win for the vice president there.
Alton Parker Wins Texas
In Wisconsin, this is another big win for the vice president. Alton Parker wins in Wisconsin.
Alton Parker Wins Wisconsin
And the race is too close to call also in Wyoming. Wyoming is undecided.
Now, lets look at our electoral map.

Heres a projection coming in now, Florida. Yes the state of Florida goes for vice president Parker tonight.
Alton Parker Wins Florida
Harding: 116 Parker: 232 266 needed to win
Lets turn to our panel now. A pretty sizable lead for the vice president here now.
Yes, but we have to remember, President Marshall had as big if not a bigger lead four years ago and senator Gallinger nearly won the presidency on him. Lets not count senator Harding out...
Actually we can, we can count him out for this race. New York, the home state of the vice president, they have voted for the home boy tonight.
I heard it...
New York goes for Alton Parker and that makes him the President elect of the United States.
Alton Parker Wins New York
Alton Parker Wins 1920 United States Presidential Election
Harding: 116 Parker: 277 266 needed to win
It was a booming economy, but senator Harding was a very strong candidate. In the end, he just couldn't make it.
To add to that victory margin, Arizona also goes for the vice president. Now President elect Parker wins in Arizona.
Alton Parker Wins Arizona
Harding: 116 Parker: 280 266 needed to win
We are going to come back with more coverage. Alton Parker, we can and have declared, is the next President of the United States. Stay with us for more as election night 1920 coverage continues.

Welcome back, here at election night 1920 coverage. We have the final two projections of the night.
First in Kentucky, a state democrats wanted to win and thought they would, but got cold feet about as election day drew near. This night has gone better than expected for them, at least with the presidency, and Kentucky does too. Kentucky goes for President elect Parker
Alton Parker Wins Kentucky
And hold on, one more. After such a ding dong battle, New Jersey will also very narrowly go to the President elect tonight. This is just a close close battle in New Jersey tonight, but in the end, Parker wins this state and its fourteen electoral votes to add to his victory column. Parker wins in New Jersey.
Alton Parker Wins New Jersey
Now, lets look at our final electoral map of the night.
Harding: 194 Parker: 337 266 needed to win
On a night when they were expected to win, the republican candidate doesn't even get 200 electoral votes.
I think what is even more of a surprise, the democratic candidate and now President elect performed well in every region of the country.
Is it a story that could have been a predicted? An incumbent vice president succeeds a popular democratic President into office?
I think that people underestimated the President's popularity, he campaigned for Parker very vigorously and it showed. Not only that, there was no major scandal affecting the democrats, and the economy is strong.
A good night for democrats at least with the presidency. This has been election night 1920 coverage. We hope you've enjoyed it. America has a new President, and it will be interesting to see what happens as the new administration begins.
Senate:
Republican: 49 Democrat: 45 Prohibition: 1 Socialist: 1 49 needed for absolute majority
House:
Republican: 215 Democrat: 210 213 needed for absolute majority

1924 Election Night Open
Good evening, we are here tonight at yet another election season. Tonight, President Parker is up for reelection. He was behind in this campaign, until the last two weeks of the election when he began to close the gap. Will it be enough?
For the republicans, Warren Harding ran but lost the republican nomination at the convention. Herbert Hoover, a well known republican figure, won the republican nomination for President. Hoover selected fomrer Illinois Governor Frank Lowden as his running mate. The Hoover/Lowden ticket leads the democratic incumbents going into tonight. Will that lead reflect in the voting?
And finally a wild card in the race tonight. Robert LaFollette, the republican senator from Wisconsin, is running on a progressive ticket with his running mate Burton Wheeler. What affect does the third party ticket have on the election? Does this ticket affect the election one way or the other?
Where have we come from since the turn of the century? Republicans held the White House for twelve years with William McKinley. Former President Marshall won by a landslide to suceed outgoing President McKinley only to very narrowly win reelection in 1916. Marshall, despite calls to run again, retired in 1920. Then came vice president Alton Parker being elected President. Parker saw the economy fall into a recession in the middle of his term, the economy began to recover but maybe not quick enough. How does it stand after tonight? Who will lead the country for the next four years? Do the democrats hold on again or are the republicans back in power? All of that is to be decided.
