First in Ohio, this state voted republican last time, President Smith didn't seem to have much of a chance here throughout the campaign. Calvin Cooldige carries Ohio for the republicans tonight.

In West Virgnia, this state was close four years ago. A lot of protestants in this state, but the democratic leadership in that state is attempting to pull the state in for the President. West Virgnia is undecided at this hour.

Welcome back, were here with a quick election update. We have no projections to make at this moment, though of course if any came while we are here, we would break into that immeaditly. None at this moment. Just a quick election night 1936 thought at 8:20 PM on the east coast. For the first time since 1928, the republican candidate leads in the electoral vote at this point in the evening. Republican senate pick ups in West Virgnia, and Illinois don't paint a pretty picutre for the national democratic ticket for the presidency in those states. And New Hampshire, a stunning development, the republican incumbent senator reelected tonight with more than ninety percent of the vote. All three New Hampshire, West Virgnia, and Illinois outstanding at this hour. Certainly with the senate races apparantly going republican at this hour, that can't be an encouraging sign for the White House and President Smith.

We have an exit poll. Lets go to Illinois, this was the state that offically gave Al Smith the presidency four years ago by roughly ten thousand votes out of three million or so cast. And lets go to an exit poll. We asked voters in the state of Illinois, was the catholic issue a factor in how you voted today. Forty-five percent of the voters in Illinois said that the catholic issue was a factor in how they voted. And who did they vote for, they told our exit poll that the forty-five percent that said catholic issue was a factor in how they voted, four fifths of them or eighty percent voted against Al Smith and for Vice Presdient Cooldige today.

In a state with twenty-nine electoral votes, a popular republican opponent, and a race that looks to be close, that can't be good news for the White House at this hour. Cooldige was governor of Vermont in the 1920s. Cooldige was in the house of representatives for one term. When Hoover was assassinated in Oregon in 1932, Cooldige was confirmed as Lowden's vice president in May. Lowden/Cooldge lost the election narrowly in 1932. Cooldige left politics for four years, planning a presidential run which is now in 1936. Hiram Johnson is his running mate.

Election Note: Democrats make a straight shot at taking back control of the senate. However, despite strong gains, they fall short. Democrats picked up a net gain of six seats, they needed thirteen to control the united states senate. A long shot, but to cut the majority in nearly half was a success. Democrats narrowly missed two other senate pick ups in Idaho and California.

As early returns came from the house, democratic gains looked promising. However, as the night dragged on, it appeared that republicans would keep the house with democrats picking up minimal seats. They picked up only five.

President Smith had another successful four years following his narrow victory in the 1936 elections. It was considered a great victory to defeat a ticket with such popular people nominated for both President and Vice President. Smith once again won narrowly despite the catholic issue. The democrats went on to do well in the 1938 mid term elections, especially in the senate. However, republicans retained control. As 1940 approached, many party leaders and supporters urged the President to run again. Smith spent a lot of time and held people off for many months about his decision rather or not to run again. Disappointment to many, Al Smith declined to run again in 1940. Vice President Garner announced his candidacy and another former New York governor Franklin Roosevelt declared his candidacy. Garner and Roosevelt were the main candidates for the democrats, Roosevelt eventually won the democratic nomination for President. In a surprise to some, Roosevelt picked Cordell Hull, 1928 looser as his running mate for Vice President.

For the republicans, former President Frank Lowden ran and won narrowly the nomination again in 1940. A surprise result to some, but former President Lowden since loosing narrowly in 1932, had gone off again and on again about if he should run or not. Lowden finally decided to run and he won renomination. Former President Lowden picked Michigan senator Arthur Vandenburg as his running mate. The campaign appeared to be another close race as election day approached. Roosevelt began with a seven point lead, but Lowden went to work throughout the campaign. The final poll showed former President Lowden leading governor Roosevelt by two points going into election day. The Lowden/Vanderburg vs Roosevelt/Hull, a blast from the past, but for one of them, part of the future.

Welcome again to our viewers to another of our often exciting election night coverage. Lets turn to our panel for some thoughts as polls get ready to close at the 7 o'clock hour.

Well its more like a family reunion tonight. The amazing thing is, this continues to be fascinating. One of the loosers from the last three election cycles will have a key role in the next government. Former President Lowden is favored to go back to the White House, he leads in the polls. If an upset occurs, it will be 1928 looser Cordell Hull going to Washington as vice president.

Any predictions at this hour?

I think it is a competetive race, but that Lowden pulls it out. There are some key states that will go his way.

We've seen the electoral map kind of stay the same over the last few cycles, will there be changes tonight?

Yes, I think you will see much of the west be more competetive, if not a lot of it go for the democrats. While Roosevelt will be hurt in the industrial midwest and the east

Due to a lot of things perhaps. One of those things being his age and some questions about his personal life.

But the kick back thing seemed to be an issue in the campaign, that Lowden appeared to begin to overcome.

He did, and it was enough to take a lead in the polls. Tonight is the final test of that issue.

Well its actually pretty predictable. Republicans might be surprised at not carrying Indiana at the top of the hour, I think they will by the end of the night.

Is Kentucky a sign of anything?

Well, I think that republicans would have liked to have been more competetive there this year, but it was pretty much expected. One thing to say, governor Roosevelt will have a much easier time in the south than did Al Smith in his two elections to the presidency.

Alabama, competetive the last two election cycles, goes strongly for the democrat tonight. Roosevelt wins easily in Alabama.

In Connecticut, we can say that the state is too close to call at this hour. The great presidential belwhether, undecided at this hour between Roosevelt and Lowden.

Delaware is the same story. Undecided at this hour in Delaware.

In Florida, Florida returns to the democratic column tonight going for Roosevelt.

Illinois the home state of Frank Lowden, cost him the election eight years ago by ten thousand votes. Lowden favored there at this hour, but Illinois is undecided.

We can delcare Roosevelt the winner in Maryland at this hour. A disappointment for the republicans there.

The state of Massachussetts is also undecided at this hour. Undecided in Massachussetts between Roosevelt and Lowden.

We can declare now Franklin Roosevelt the winner in Mississippi. A strong democratic state goes for the governor tonight.
