Ohio Stays Republican. West Virgnia Undecided.
Welcome back, two more states have closed their polls. We have a projection in one of those two states.
First in Ohio, this state voted republican last time, President Smith didn't seem to have much of a chance here throughout the campaign. Calvin Cooldige carries Ohio for the republicans tonight.
Calvin Cooldige Wins Ohio
In West Virgnia, this state was close four years ago. A lot of protestants in this state, but the democratic leadership in that state is attempting to pull the state in for the President. West Virgnia is undecided at this hour.
Lets look at the electoral map.
Smith: 31 Cooldige: 29 266 needed to win
A major projection for the republicans in the West Virgnia senate race. The democratic incumbent senator Matt Neely is going down to defeat tonight. Hugh Shott, the republican, is the new senator elect from West Virgnia. Shott wins in West Virgnia tonight.
Hugh Shott Wins West Virgnia Senate Election
Republican: 43 Democrat: 25 49 needed for absolute majority
Panel, any thoughts so far tonight?
I think its many of the same battleground states as it was four years ago. One note though, the West Virgnia senate race going republican so quickly is probably bad news for the President in that state.
Alright panel, were coming back with election night 1936 coverage. Stay with us. Election night 1936.
Polls Closed, but no projection:
West Virgnia (>1% reporting):
Smith/Garner: 44.1%
Cooldige/Johnson: 55.9%
Indiana (54% reporting):
Smith/Garner: 47.4%
Cooldige/Johnson: 52.6%

Welcome back, were here with a quick election update. We have no projections to make at this moment, though of course if any came while we are here, we would break into that immeaditly. None at this moment. Just a quick election night 1936 thought at 8:20 PM on the east coast. For the first time since 1928, the republican candidate leads in the electoral vote at this point in the evening. Republican senate pick ups in West Virgnia, and Illinois don't paint a pretty picutre for the national democratic ticket for the presidency in those states. And New Hampshire, a stunning development, the republican incumbent senator reelected tonight with more than ninety percent of the vote. All three New Hampshire, West Virgnia, and Illinois outstanding at this hour. Certainly with the senate races apparantly going republican at this hour, that can't be an encouraging sign for the White House and President Smith.
We have an exit poll. Lets go to Illinois, this was the state that offically gave Al Smith the presidency four years ago by roughly ten thousand votes out of three million or so cast. And lets go to an exit poll. We asked voters in the state of Illinois, was the catholic issue a factor in how you voted today. Forty-five percent of the voters in Illinois said that the catholic issue was a factor in how they voted. And who did they vote for, they told our exit poll that the forty-five percent that said catholic issue was a factor in how they voted, four fifths of them or eighty percent voted against Al Smith and for Vice Presdient Cooldige today.
In a state with twenty-nine electoral votes, a popular republican opponent, and a race that looks to be close, that can't be good news for the White House at this hour. Lets come back, this has been an election night 1936 update. Hard to find a positive feeling at the White House at this hour. We'll come back. Stay with us.
Illinois Exit Poll:
Question: Was the catholic issue a factor in how you voted today?
Yes: 45%
No: 55%
Question: For those that it was a factor in how you voted, who did you vote for?
Al Smith: 15%
Calvin Cooldige: 80%
Other: 5%

Al Smith Wins Arkansas
Smith: 66 Cooldige: 109 266 needed to win
We can also say that the state of North Carolina is undecided at this hour. Going back to the days of William McKinley, this state has been competetive but democrats usually take it. Will they tonight, we don't know at this hour. Its undecided.
Alabama, however. Alabama was undecided at the top of this hour. We can now delcare that in Alabama, President Smith will go on to carry that state tonight. Al Smith wins in Alabama tonight.
Al Smith Wins Alabama
Smith: 77 Cooldige: 109 266 needed to win
Lets go to our senate races. In Arkansas, Joseph Robinson, the democrat incumbent wins reelection tonight. Robinson holds that seat for the democrats at this hour.
Joseph Robinson Wins Arkansas Senate Election
Republican: 49 Democrat: 31 49 needed for absolute majority
There is continued trouble for the democrats. The senate race in North Carolina. Democratic incumbent Josiah Bailey is in a close race with republican challenger Frank Patton. That race is undecided at this hour.
Smith Struggling at this Hour. West Virgnia goes for Cooldige.
Yes, we have another declaration at the presidential desk. West Virgnia, voted republican four years ago and does so again tonight. West Virgnia goes for Cooldige tonight.
Calvin Cooldige Wins West Virgnia
Smith: 77 Cooldige: 117 266 needed to win
Bad news it seems for democrats at this hour.
Yes the White House is saying that they believe that as the 9 o'clock hour comes and goes and other hours to come that their vote count will only improve. Its not over at the White House at this hour.
They hope not at least.
Okay were coming back to election night 1936 coverage. Stay with us.

Welcome back. We have more states let their polls close at this hour. We have a few projections to tell you about.
First in New York, this will make the Smith camp smile at this hour. President Smith carries his home state of New York. New York for Smith.

Al Smith Wins Louisiana
Oh but Vice President Cooldige maintains his front runner status here. Michigan, fifteen electoral votes, Michigan goes for Cooldige tonight.
Calvin Cooldige Wins Michigan
Minnesota, a state fiercely fought over this year. Cooldige was thought to have a narrow lead going into today, but the state is undecided at this hour. We'll see where that goes.
Could be decisive.
It could be. Voted for Lowden four years ago. Nebraska, Nebraska goes for Cooldige tonight. Disappointment for democrats there.
Calvin Cooldige Wins Nebraska
New Jersey, another state democrats thought they might have a chance. Its not to be tonight. New Jersey goes for Cooldige and the republicans tonight.
Calvin Cooldige Wins New Jersey
New Mexico, New Mexico is undecided at this hour. Undecided between Cooldige and Smith in New Mexico.

Al Smith Wins Rhode Island
We can say its undecided in South Dakota at the top of this hour. Undecided between Smith and Cooldige in South Dakota at the top of this hour.
Texas, the lone star state. Besides New York, might be the lonely star in the Smith column. Al Smith wins in Texas tonight.
Al Smith Wins Texas
We can also say that Wisconsin is undecided at this hour. President Smith leads in Wisconsin, but we just can't call the state at the top of this hour.
And vice president Cooldige does what republicans did four years ago, he carries the state of Wyoming. Wyoming for Cooldige at this hour.
Calvin Cooldige Wins Wyoming
Lets turn and look at the electoral map at this hour.
Smith: 161 Cooldige: 177 266 needed to win
The map starting to take shape there.
Yeah, the big projection for Smith was New York.
His home state was expected at this hour. I'm told we have a few more projections to tell you about at this time.
In South Dakota, a state that we said was undecided just a moment ago. We can now say that Cooldige has a big enough lead where we can call the state. Calvin Cooldige takes South Dakota tonight.
Calvin Cooldige Wins South Dakota
However, there is good news for President Smith at this hour. First in Wisconsin, President Smith we can project will go on to carry the state, as he did four years ago.
Al Smith Wins Wisconsin
Diddo in North Carolina. A part of the democratic solid south does it again tonight. Al Smith takes North Carolina tonight.
Al Smith Wins North Carolina
And Missouri, the show me state. President Smith takes Missouri tonight.

A state that will be a disappointment for democrats. Cooldige takes Florida. The sunshine state does what it did four years ago, goes republican. Calvin Cooldige wins in Florida tonight.
Calvin Cooldige Wins Florida
Lets now turn to our electoral map.
Election Night Takes Shape. Smith Crosses 200 Mark, Narrowly Leads Cooldige.
Smith: 201 Cooldige: 188 266 needed to win
This has to make the Smith camp feel better at this hour.
It does, some things as a democrat that were disappointed in tonight. Wish Kentucky and Indiana could have been more competetive tonight. Florida is also a surprise.
Were coming back, election night is beginning to take shape. Come right back with us. Election night 1936 coverage.
Smith: 201 Cooldige: 188 266 needed to win

Who's Coolidge's running mate again? Also, can you detail his career? It seems the first off you had him be from a different state which should make his career be quite a bit different than OTL.

Cooldige was governor of Vermont in the 1920s. Cooldige was in the house of representatives for one term. When Hoover was assassinated in Oregon in 1932, Cooldige was confirmed as Lowden's vice president in May. Lowden/Cooldge lost the election narrowly in 1932. Cooldige left politics for four years, planning a presidential run which is now in 1936. Hiram Johnson is his running mate.

1938 Congressional Mid Term Election Results
Senate:
Republican: 54 Democrat: 42 49 needed for absolute majority
House of Representatives:
Republican: 240 Democrat: 185 213 needed for absolute majority
Election Note: Democrats make a straight shot at taking back control of the senate. However, despite strong gains, they fall short. Democrats picked up a net gain of six seats, they needed thirteen to control the united states senate. A long shot, but to cut the majority in nearly half was a success. Democrats narrowly missed two other senate pick ups in Idaho and California.
As early returns came from the house, democratic gains looked promising. However, as the night dragged on, it appeared that republicans would keep the house with democrats picking up minimal seats. They picked up only five.

******************************************************************************
President Smith had another successful four years following his narrow victory in the 1936 elections. It was considered a great victory to defeat a ticket with such popular people nominated for both President and Vice President. Smith once again won narrowly despite the catholic issue. The democrats went on to do well in the 1938 mid term elections, especially in the senate. However, republicans retained control. As 1940 approached, many party leaders and supporters urged the President to run again. Smith spent a lot of time and held people off for many months about his decision rather or not to run again. Disappointment to many, Al Smith declined to run again in 1940. Vice President Garner announced his candidacy and another former New York governor Franklin Roosevelt declared his candidacy. Garner and Roosevelt were the main candidates for the democrats, Roosevelt eventually won the democratic nomination for President. In a surprise to some, Roosevelt picked Cordell Hull, 1928 looser as his running mate for Vice President.
For the republicans, former President Frank Lowden ran and won narrowly the nomination again in 1940. A surprise result to some, but former President Lowden since loosing narrowly in 1932, had gone off again and on again about if he should run or not. Lowden finally decided to run and he won renomination. Former President Lowden picked Michigan senator Arthur Vandenburg as his running mate. The campaign appeared to be another close race as election day approached. Roosevelt began with a seven point lead, but Lowden went to work throughout the campaign. The final poll showed former President Lowden leading governor Roosevelt by two points going into election day. The Lowden/Vanderburg vs Roosevelt/Hull, a blast from the past, but for one of them, part of the future.

Roosevelt: 0 Lowden: 0 266 needed to win
Election 1940 Coverage
Welcome again to our viewers to another of our often exciting election night coverage. Lets turn to our panel for some thoughts as polls get ready to close at the 7 o'clock hour.
Well its more like a family reunion tonight. The amazing thing is, this continues to be fascinating. One of the loosers from the last three election cycles will have a key role in the next government. Former President Lowden is favored to go back to the White House, he leads in the polls. If an upset occurs, it will be 1928 looser Cordell Hull going to Washington as vice president.
Any predictions at this hour?
I think it is a competetive race, but that Lowden pulls it out. There are some key states that will go his way.
We've seen the electoral map kind of stay the same over the last few cycles, will there be changes tonight?
Yes, I think you will see much of the west be more competetive, if not a lot of it go for the democrats. While Roosevelt will be hurt in the industrial midwest and the east
due to...
Due to a lot of things perhaps. One of those things being his age and some questions about his personal life.
But the kick back thing seemed to be an issue in the campaign, that Lowden appeared to begin to overcome.
He did, and it was enough to take a lead in the polls. Tonight is the final test of that issue.
Thanks panel. It is no 7 o'clock on the east coast, we have some projections to tell you about.
In South Carolina, even after all these years, still the most democratic state in the country. Governor Roosevelt gets the first electoral votes of the night and carries South Carolina.
Franklin Roosevelt Wins South Carolina
In Georgia, another democratic state in the south. Roosevelt wins Georgia tonight.
Franklin Roosevelt Wins Georgia
In Indiana, we are told a close race there at this hour. Former President Lowden thought to carry Indiana relatively easily tonight. Undecided in the hoosier state at this hour.
Also big win for the democrats, governor Roosevelt wins in Kentucky, the bluegrass state tonight.
Franklin Roosevelt Wins Kentucky
In Virgnia, this is a surprise. More good news for the democrats at the top of this hour. Roosevelt takes Virgnia.
Franklin Roosevelt Wins Virgnia
And in Vermont, the only state that former President Lowden gets at the top of this hour. Frank Lowden carries as he did in his election loss in 1932, a traditional republican state. Lowden gets Vermont at this hour.
Frank Lowden Wins Vermont
Lets take a look at our electoral map for the first time tonight.
Roosevelt: 42 Lowden: 3 266 needed to win
Lets turn to our panel with that in mind.
Well its actually pretty predictable. Republicans might be surprised at not carrying Indiana at the top of the hour, I think they will by the end of the night.
Is Kentucky a sign of anything?
Well, I think that republicans would have liked to have been more competetive there this year, but it was pretty much expected. One thing to say, governor Roosevelt will have a much easier time in the south than did Al Smith in his two elections to the presidency.
Indiana does go to Frank Lowden. That just in at our election 1940 central. Frank Lowden wins in Indiana tonight. Were coming back, stay with us. Election 1940 coverage
Frank Lowden Wins Indiana
Roosevelt: 42 Lowden: 14 266 needed to win

Good evening again and welcome back. We have two more states whose polls have closed at this hour. Lets look them over.
In Ohio, voted for Lowden in 1932 and Cooldige in 1936, tonight its undecided at this hour.
In West Virgnia, this state is undecided also between Roosevelt and Lowden at this hour.
No change to the electoral map at this time. Lets move on to the 8 o'clock hour. Fifteen states have had their polls close. The biggest poll closing hour of the night. Lets look them over.
Alabama, competetive the last two election cycles, goes strongly for the democrat tonight. Roosevelt wins easily in Alabama.
Franklin Roosevelt Wins Alabama
In Connecticut, we can say that the state is too close to call at this hour. The great presidential belwhether, undecided at this hour between Roosevelt and Lowden.
Delaware is the same story. Undecided at this hour in Delaware.
In Florida, Florida returns to the democratic column tonight going for Roosevelt.
Franklin Roosevelt Wins Florida
Illinois the home state of Frank Lowden, cost him the election eight years ago by ten thousand votes. Lowden favored there at this hour, but Illinois is undecided.
Frank Lowden wins in Maine. Maine, a strong republican state, does it again tonight.
Frank Lowden Wins Maine
We can delcare Roosevelt the winner in Maryland at this hour. A disappointment for the republicans there.
Franklin Roosevelt Wins Maryland
The state of Massachussetts is also undecided at this hour. Undecided in Massachussetts between Roosevelt and Lowden.
We can declare now Franklin Roosevelt the winner in Mississippi. A strong democratic state goes for the governor tonight.
Franklin Roosevelt Wins Mississippi
The state of Missouri is undecided at this hour. Undecided in Missouri.
We can also declare the state of New Hampshire to be undecided.
Lowden does win New Jersey. A win for the republican in New Jersey
Frank Lowden Wins New Jersey
Oklahoma, a state that went republican the last two times. Oklahoma is undecided at this hour.
...I'm sorry last three times. We can also say that Pennsylvania is too early to call at this hour. Just not enough votes in to make any conclusions about the keystone state at this hour.
We can declare Roosevelt the winner in Tennessee. Roosevelt takes the volunteer state.
And the lone star state of Texas goes for governor Franklin Roosevelt tonight.
Franklin Roosevelt Wins Tennessee
Franklin Roosevelt Wins Texas
Lets look at the electoral map.
Roosevelt: 111 Lowden: 38 266 needed to win
An interesting race at this hour.
I think the news is encouraging for Roosevelt right now. However, there are still some big industrial states that are expected to go for Lowden tonight.
Lets come back, election night 1940 coverage. Stay with us, we'll come back.

Welcome back. We have a line of projections to make at this hour, for both candidates.
First in Arkansas, part of the solid democratic south. Governor Roosevelt takes the state of Arkansas tonight.
Franklin Roosevelt Wins Arkansas
Same story in North Carolina. This one was not contested by the republicans, and seems accordingly goes to Roosvelt.
Franklin Roosevelt Wins North Carolina
This might come as a surprise, Roosevelt also takes New Hampshire at this hour.
Franklin Roosevelt Wins New Hampshire
And good news for the republicans, Illinois, the state that has done them bad the last two election cycles. Illinois goes back to the republican column, a state the democrats were counting on.
Frank Lowden Wins Illinois
Delaware will go to governor Roosevelt, this just in.
Franklin Roosevelt Wins Delaware
Roosevelt: 140 Lowden: 67 266 needed to win
