******************************************************************************

President Roosevelt sees his second term begin with a quiet confidence. For most of 1945, President Roosevelt rides a high tide into his second term. However, on January 21st 1946, the stock market crashes. By the middle of the mid term election fall campaign, unemployment rises as high as 18.5%. President Roosevelt saw his approval rating plummet into the year of 1946 to thrity-five percent approve. Democrats appear to be doing very poorly in the polls leading up to election day 1946.

Election 1946 coverage will be given in full coverage. Great Depression beigns under the second term of Franklin Roosevelt, what affect will this event have on the future of American politics?

Republicans Expecting Strong Showing. Byrd Trails in Virgnia.
Good evening and do we have a show for you tonight. This severe economic downturn under a once popular incumbent President. Now the President couldn't be more unpopular. Republicans have a twenty point lead on the overall congressional ballot.

And lets see how that margin in the poll reflects in the voting. Six states have closed their polls and we have some projecitons.

First in Indiana, a republican incumbent retired here. Bill Jenner wins very easily here in Indiana. Holding that senate seat for republicans.

Bill Jenner Wins Indiana Senate Election

In Vermont, we can declare that incumbent Warren Austin wins reelection to the senate very easily tonight. He holds that seat for republicans.

Warren Austin Wins Vermont Senate Election

Here is what might become a telling sign of the night. In Virgnia, we cannot make a projection in this senate race. However, senator Byrd from that state is trailing his republican challenger in that state. Virgnia and other southern senate races will defenitely be ones that people are watching tonight. Can republicans flip these southern senate seats? Thats the big question of the night. Byrd trails his republican opponent, but the Virgnia race is undecided.

Lets look at our senate projected map at this hour

Republican: 31        Democrat: 34        Independent: 1        49 needed for absolute majority

What surprise you so far tonight?

Well nothing seeing the way the polls are and the anger with the democrats over the economy. Democrats are expected to do very poorly tonight and those first projections show it too.

Virgnia...

In Virgnia and across the country, this is historic. The republicans are expected to change the political picture decisively tonight and many of these returns are showing that at least so far tonight.

We'll come back with our mid term election night coverage. Stay right here, we'll come back.

Republican: 31        Democrat: 34        Independent: 1        49 needed for absolute majority

Welcome back to our election 1946 coverage, where at 7:30 on the east coast, we have a major projection.

Lester Parsons, the republican out of Virgnia, will be the next junior senator from that state. Parsons wins in a headline race defeating incumbent Harry Byrd in that race. This is an upset for the democrats as Parsons goes on to win a senate seat from Virgnia tonight.

Lester Parsons Wins Virgnia Senate Election

To add to that, we have two other projections at this time. First in West Virgnia, Thomas Sweeny the republican defeats incumbent democrat Harley Gilgore to win that seat. Gilgore becoming the second democratic senator already tonight to go down to defeat.

Thomas Sweeny Wins West Virgnia Senate Election

And in Ohio, this is a hold for the republicans. John Bricker, the former republican nominee for vice president, returns to Washington as a united states senator from the state of Ohio. Bricker wins the Ohio senate race and holds that seat for the republicans.

John Bricker Wins Ohio Senate Election

Lets now look at the senate map that is beginning to fill up some more. That upset win in Virgnia for the republicans tonight.
Republican: 34        Democrat: 34        Independent: 1        49 needed for absolute majority

Okay, back in a moment.

...John Bricker, former republican vice presidential nominee goes to Washington...Two Democratic Incumbents Defeated at early hour on election night...Upset for the democrats, Harry Byrd seeking a third term from Virgnia, goes down to defeat...

Back here at our election 1946 coverage, the republicans seem to be doing very well this far tonight. Turning to our panel, the republican strength apparant tonight, is this a surprise?

No, I don't think so. Some said earlier that it was democrats being in power for too long, I think the economy is the main issue that is hurting the democrats. President Roosevelt has seen his approval ratings take a tremendous dip.

Any surprises so far in the returns tonight?

I think Virgnia could be taken as a surprise. Senator Byrd had trouble throughout this campaign, so its not too much of a surprise. A huge headline tonight, republicans finally eating into the solid south.

The real question might be answered in two years with the presidential race. It is 8 o'clock on the east coast and some more states have closed their polls. Lets look over the information that we have.

In Connecticut, the republican incumbent senator Thomas Hart easily wins reelection there tonight. Hart wins again big in Connecticut.

Thomas Hart Wins Connecticut Senate Election

In Delaware, we can declare senator Jim Tunnell to be the winner in that race. Holding that seat for republicans.

Jim Tunnell Wins Delaware Senate Election

The Florida senate race, this will be one to watch tonight. incumbent democrat Spessard Holland is being challenged by republican Harry Schad. The race in Florida is undecided at this hour.

In Maine Ralph Brewster easily rides the wave and wins another term, defeating democrat Peter MacDonald in Maine tonight. Holding that senate for republicans.

Ralph Brewster Wins Maine Senate Election

In Maryland, a new comer to the senate David Markey wins that race, holding that seat for the republicans.

David Markey Wins Maryland Senate Election

Finally a call and some good news for the democrats. Ted Bilbo, the democratic incumbent, wins another term to the senate from Mississippi. Bilbo holds that seat for the democrats tonight.

Ted Bilbo Wins Mississippi Senate Election

In Massachussetts, heres a big race. Henry Cabot Lodge Jr is attempting to return to the senate after being defeated twelve years ago, the race between Lodge and incumbent democrat David Walsh is undecided at this hour.

In Missouri, we can call Manvel Davis the winner in that race. Davis wins the Missouri senate race, returning to Washington for another term in the senate. Holding that seat for the republicans.

Manvel Davis Wins Missouri Senate Election

In New Jersey, we can declare the incumbent senator Warren Barbour the winner in that race. Barbour holds the New Jersey seat for republicans in the senate.

Warren Barbour Wins New Jersey Senate Election

In Pennsylvania, Jay Cooke the republican senator wins again. He will be going into his second term.

Jay Cooke Wins Pennsylvania Senate Election

Finally in Tennessee, we can also declare the race there between incumbent democratic senator Kenneth McKellar and republican challenger W B Ladd is undecided at this hour. Undecided in the McKellar vs Ladd race tonight.

Lets now look at our senate map, as I'm sure republicans are moving closer to controlling the next senate.

Republican: 41        Democrat: 35        Independent: 1        49 needed for absolute majority

Alright, a few races undecided. Republicans seem to be doing very well at this hour. Lets come back, election night 1946 coverage continues. Stay with us, we'll come back.

Good evening again and welcome back. It is 9 o'clock on the east coast and we have some projections to tell you about at this hour. Lets get right to them, as more polls close at the 9 o'clock hour on the east coast.

First lets turn to a race that was previously undecided. Virgnia was a shock in the south for democrats tonight, but Florida might be more pleasant news. In Florida, we can project now that senator Spessard Holland will hold on in that race. Holland wins in Florida, holding that seat for the democrats.

Spessard Holland Wins Florida Senate Election

Hold on a little more bright news for democrats here. In Arizona, now things begin to move west. Ernest McFarland, the incumbent democrat running for reelection, we can now project McFarland will get another term tonight. McFarland wins in Arizona, holding that seat for the democrats.

Ernest McFarland Wins Arizona Senate Election

In Michigan, a rising star in the republican party moves to the senate. Arthur Vandenberg retired to make way for George Romney, a young state senator. Romney moves from the state senate to the united states senate. George Romney wins a senate seat from Michigan defeating democrat Jim Lee. Romney wins in Michigan.

George Romney Wins Michigan Senate Election

...This just in, Walsh wins in Massachussetts. Henry Cabot Lodge Jr trying to make a comeback after being defeated twelve years ago, but apparantly it wasn't to be. David Walsh takes Massachussetts senate race tonight, more about that in a moment.

David Walsh Wins Massachussetts Senate Election

Shocker there for republicans, certainly republicans favored tonight, but some bitter pills for them to swallow at the same time. In Minnesota, another republican incumbent sails to reelection tonight. Senator Henrick Shipstead wins another term there. Shipstead wins in Minnesota, holding that seat for republicans.

Henrick Shipstead Wins Minnesota Senate Election

We can declare another democrat defeated tonight. Senator Cochran from Nebraska goes down to defeat. Hugh Butler, the republican, defeats senator Cochran in Nebraska tonight.

Hugh Butler Wins Nebraska Senate Election

New Mexico, the race there between democratic senator Dennis Chavez and republican challenger Pat Hurley is undecided at this hour. Undecided between Chavez and Hurley at this hour.

In New York, we can declare the incumbent senator Barton the winner in that race. Bruce Barton returns to Washington, he will be going into his second term.

Bruce Barton Wins New York Senate Election

In Rhode Island, incumbent republican Jim McManus wins another term there. McManus will return again to the united states senate.

Jim McManus Wins Rhode Island Senate Election

In Texas, another democrat survives the republican wave. Tom Connally the democratic incumbent senator returns to the senate, holding that seat for the democrats.

Tom Connally Wins Texas Senate Election

In Wisconsin, Joe McCarthy wins his race there. McCarthy wins election to the senate from Wisconsin, holding that seat for the republicans tonight.

Joe McCarthy Wins Wisconsin Senate Election

We can say that at this hour the race between republican challenger Harry Henderson and democratic incumbent senator Joe O'Mahoney is undecided at this hour. Undecided in the Wyoming senate race tonight.

Lets look at our updated senate map as it stands at this hour.

Republican: 46        Democrat: 39        Independent: 1        49 needed for absolute majority

Any thoughts from our panel?

The Massachussetts call is a surprise. Virgnia is a hard pill for democrats to swallow tonight, Harry Byrd was a leader of democrats in the senate. The White House, we got word just moments ago, shaken that was the word shaken by the Virgnia projection. Byrd was favored by almost everyone to win reelection tonight.

Senator Byrd has not conceeded that race yet, but we have projected that his republican opponent wins that race in an upset tonight. The Massachussetts projection however is good news for the democrats tonight.

It is, Lodge is a republican that democrats took out twelve years ago, and they've done it again tonight. Walsh a bright spot on a night when a lot of democrats are in trouble.

Any chance that democrats could retain control of the senate tonight?

I don't see it. They will probably loose more seats, but have a respectful performance in the west. They would have to pull some more surprises in the senate races both outstanding and still to come.

We'll be back here on election night 1946 coverage. Our election coverage continues, stay with us, we'll come back.

Pat Hurley Wins New Mexico Senate Election

Polls have closed in some more western states. We have some projections to tell you about at this time.

In Montana, Zales Ecton the republican challenger goes on to defeat the democratic incumbent senator there. Ecton wins in Montana, picking up another seat for the republicans tonight.

Zales Ecton Wins Montana Senate Election

At this hour, we can declare the Utah senate race between democratic incumbent senator Abe Murdock and republican Arthur Watkins is undecided at this hour. The race between Murdock and Watkins is too close to call at this hour.

In North Dakota, we can declare this race undecided at this hour too. A three way race between republican incumbent Bill Langer, democrat Abner Larson, and independent candidate Arthur Thompson is undecided at this hour. Undecided in a three way race at this 10 o'clock hour.

The race in Nevada between George Malone, the republican, and democratic incumbent senator Edward Carville is undecided at this hour. That would be another democratic incumbent to go down tonight if Carville lost, that race is undecided at this hour.

Most of the other races have been called. One curious thing is that senator Byrd is yet to conceed his race, thats one that we projected earlier in the evening.

Parsons continues to hold a pretty big lead...

he has conceeded, we recieve word now senator Harry Bryd, a democrat, has conceeded the race for the united states senate in Richmond. What a shock of an election in the Virgnia senate race tonight. Parsons takes down a very powerful democratic incumbent in Washington tonight.

Harry Byrd conceeds the race in Virgnia, republicans control the senate, lead in race for the house. Election 1946 coverage continues when we come back. Stay with us, we'll come back.

Welcome back to our election night 1946 coverage. We have another national declaration to make. Republicans will control both houses of congress for at least the next two years.

Republicans Win Control of the House of Representatives

Lets turn to our panel after that declaration of the house going to the republicans.

Its not a surprise. What the surprise might be is how long it took to make that projection. This is not a republican sweep that we thought in the days leading up to the election or at the out set of the evening with Byrd loosing. Democrats are holding their own against bad circumstances tonight.

Where do you see that in the results?

Well Massachussetts for one thing, Lodge was expected to win easily there tonight. Senator Walsh defeated him like he did twelve years ago, that was a surprise. Walsh is not in great health either.

Its a surprise...

The Lodge family is a major republican Massachussetts family and this is their second straight election that they have lost, go figure.

...And if I may add, as we move west, the democrats are doing better.

Are the southern losses tough for the democrats to swallow tonight?

Yes, as the recent presidential elections have shown, the south is truly solid democrat in all ways, and tonight republicans win senate seats in the south for the first time since reconstruction.

Murdock wins in Utah. Abe Murdock, the democratic incumbent, holds his seat in Utah.

Abe Murdock Wins Utah Senate Election
Republican: 53        Democrat: 40        Independent: 1        49 needed for absolute majority

And thats what I was saying, democrats are out performing what most pollsters and pundits, and frankly their own party leaders thought they could do tonight.

I hear you and we have some more news coming quickly now. We have just given that North Dakota race that has been hanging out there for a little more than an hour now, we have given that race to the democrat Abner Larson. This is signifcant, its not all gloom and doom for democrats tonight. Larson defeats republican incumbent senator Bill Langer there tonight. Larson wins in an upset for republicans. Larson wins in North Dakota tonight.

Abner Larson Wins North Dakota Senate Election

Lets look again at our projected senate map at this hour.
Republican: 53        Democrat: 41        Independent: 1        49 needed for absolute majority

Were going to come back with our panel. And that Wyoming race is the only one left outstanding, we'll come back. Stay with us here at election 1946 coverage, we'll come back.

Final 1946 Election Results

Senate:
Republican: 53        Democrat: 42        Independent: 1        49 needed for absolute majority

House:
Republican: 229        Democrat: 196        213 needed for absolute majority

1946 Mid Term Election Highlights:
You've heard it a million times, hear it again. Harry Byrd, the veteran democrat senator, looses reelection in an upset. What makes it all the more interesting, at the same time a veteran democrat like that goes down, Henry Cabot Lodge Jr, a republican expected to win big after being defeated twelve years ago. Senator David Welsh of Massachussetts holds on against Lodge in an upset. North Dakota, a reliable republican state for the presidency and usually the congress, the democratic challenger wins the race in an upset. Both North Dakota seats controlled by democrats in the next congress. A handfull of endangered democrat incumbents hold on late on election night.

******************************************************************************

Preceeding the mid term elections but even more after, the Roosevelt went to work in a bi partisan manner with the republican controlled congress to work on economic programs to attempt to bring the nation out of the recession. Numerous government reform programs were debated, voted on, and passed through the congress as Franklin Roosevelt announced his candidacy for a third term to the presidency. Unemployment was headed for 10 percent from the depth of the depression at 18%. Vice President Cordell Hull, despite flirting with not running for another term, announced that he would go ahead and seek renomination for a third term as vice president.

The Roosevelt/Hull ticket would face a stiff challenge in the 1948 election campaign. Not just the poor economic record, but a strong republican challenger and if that wasn't bad enough, a split in the democratic party. Strom Thurmond of South Carolina announced his candidacy on a States Rights party ticket. Thurmond and his running mate Fielding Wright got ballot access in all fifty states. For the republicans in election 1948, California senator Bill Knowland defeated some better known candidates to win the republican nomination for President. Senator Knowland put another senator George Romney on the ticket as his running mate in the election.

President Roosevelt put up a brave fight in the election campaign. However, as election day neared, senator Knowland maintained a lead in the polls, but the President pulled the race into being within the margin of error at the conclusion of the election campaign. Election night in this three way race for the presidency starts next.

Good evening and we welcome you to our election night 1948 coverage. Republicans are expected to retain control of both houses of congress tonight, full 1948 congressional results will be shown at the conclusion of our election coverage. The focus is on the presidency, as we look at our electoral map now.

Roosevelt: 0        Knowland: 0        Thurmond: 0        266 needed to win

President Roosevelt first came to politics in the 1920s afer serving in the cabinent of former Presidents Thomas Marshall and Alton Parker. Roosevelt then became governor of New York for two terms, lost a bid for the democratic nomination in 1932. The President went on to win the nod eight years later and since has won and served two terms as President of the United States. All was well until the economy stock market collapsed, following the congressional elections, the White House went to work with congress and the unemployment rate has shown a dramatic drop.

Roosevelt faces a popular republican senator Bill Knowland from California. The united states senate is the first national office the senator has held in his life. Its not only one opponent, but two for the President to face this year. A group of democrats walked out of the democratic national convention this summer and formed their own party, the states rights party. Strom Thurmond won the nomination for the states rights party and Fielding Wright joined Thurmond on the ticket as his running mate on the states rights party ticket.

This three way race is a historic one for the presidency. Could the third party candidacy be so strong, that no candidate reaches 266 electoral votes and the election therefore goes to the house of representatives for the first time since 1824, the returns will show.

And now we are coming upon the seven o'clock hour on the east coast, six states are closing their polls and I'm told, we have some projections. Yes, lets go to them now.

Despite Depression, No Indication of Republican Sweep. Thurmond Leads in Electoral and Popular Vote.First in South Carolina, this is something we will have to get used to tonight. Strom Thurmond, the third party candidate, wins easily in South Carolina tonight. South Carolina goes for Thurmond.

Strom Thurmond Wins South Carolina

In Kentucky, this is good news for the democrats at this hour. Despite a strong showing by Thurmond, Franklin Roosevelt holds on to Kentucky tonight. Kentucky, the bluegrass state, goes for the President.

Franklin Roosevelt Wins Kentucky

In Indiana, often considered a key state and one that the democrats targeted again this year. Indiana is undecided tonight at this hour. Undecided at this hour in the hoosier state, Indiana, in the Roosevelt vs Knowland vs Thurmond race for the presidency tonight.

In Vermont, President Roosevelt performing very poorly according to our exit polls there tonight. Bill Knowland wins in Vermont tonight.

Bill Knowland Wins Vermont

Thurmond takes Georgia. Strom Thurmond comes out of the gate already taking two southern states. Georgia goes for Thurmond.

Strom Thurmond Wins Georgia

And finally in Virgnia. That state, Virgnia is undecided in the race for the White House at this hour.

Lets now look at our electoral map.

Roosevelt: 11        Knowland: 3        Thurmond: 20        266 needed to win

And the third party candidate in the election leads at the top of the 7 o'clock hour. Is this a surprise?

I'm not sure about it being a surprise, but its historic. Just having a third party candidate in such a strong position tonight compared to all other minor party candidates in past presidential campaigns and elections is a historic thing tonight.

Okay, back in a moment.

Roosevelt: 11        Knowland: 3        Thurmond: 20        266 needed to win

Welcome back again. We have another declaration to make in the state of Virgnia, hold on to your hats. Thurmond takes another state, the old dominion goes for Strom Thurmond tonight.

Strom Thurmond Wins Virgnia

President Roosevelt takes another state tonight, on a night when he was expected to do poorly. Franklin Roosevelt takes West Virgnia tonight, leaving senator Knowland with only three electoral votes at this hour.

Franklin Roosevelt Wins West Virgnia

Lets look at our electoral map at this hour after those two projections. Big one for Thurmond in Virgnia.
Roosevelt: 19        Knowland: 3        Thurmond: 31        266 needed to win

We can say that the race in Ohio between the three candidates is undecided at this hour. The Roosevelt vs Knowland vs Thurmond contest is undecided in the buckeye state at this hour. Ohio is undecided at this hour.

We can go on to a series of returns at this hour. Fifteen states have closed their polls. This race might begin to take shape coming up next. How strong is the third party candidacy showing tonight as we step out of the south? Can Roosevelt pull out another win despite the climate, or will Bill Knowland carry the republicans to victory for the first time since 1928? Some of those questions might start to be answered as fifteen states close there polls when we come back.

...you were not going for simple wording there were you?

I guess not

Knowland gains in the electoral vote, nationally the three way race for the presidency is too close to call at this hour. Thats the headline for the 8 o'clock hour as polls close in fifteen more states across the country. We have some information along with some projections. Lets look them over.

In Alabama, another win for Strom Thurmond tonight. Thurmond wins easily in Alabama.

Strom Thurmond Wins Alabama

In Connecticut, the race between the three candidates is undecided at this hour. Would be a real strong suit for Thurmond if he began to win outside of the south. Undecided between the three in Connecticut.

Diddo in Delaware, undecided between the candidates in that state at this hour.

Florida, another state where the hopes are high for Thurmond. The race is undecided at this hour in the sunshine state.

Diddo again in Illinois. Undecided there tonight at this hour.

We can declare the state of Maine for senator Knowland. A reliably republican state, Knowland takes Maine tonight.

Bill Knowland Wins Maine

Maryland, that state is undecided at this hour. Undecided in Maryland between the three candidates.

President Roosevelt wins in Massachussetts. A major victory there, keeping his hopes alive for reelection tonight. Massachussetts goes for the President.

Franklin Roosevelt Wins Massachussetts

Thurmond gets another one. Mississippi goes for Strom Thurmond tonight.

Strom Thurmond Wins Mississippi

Roosevelt wins Missouri, the show me state goes for the President.

We can declare the state of New Hampshire as undecided at this hour. The Roosevelt vs Knowland vs Thurmond race is undecided in New Hampshire at this hour.

We can however make a declaration in New Jersey. The state goes for Knowland tonight.

Bill Knowland Wins New Jersey

We can declare...starting to see a little bit of southern strength for the President. Franklin Roosevelt beats back the southern threat from Thurmond and takes Oklahoma tonight.

Franklin Roosevelt Wins Oklahoma

Pennsylvania, the keystone state, voted democrat the last two elections. Its too close to call between the candidates in the keystone state at this hour.

Tennessee, the volunteer state is undecided at this hour between the three candidates. The interesting story we have devleoping in the south tonight.

Now lets look at our updated electoral map and vote count.

Roosevelt: 60        Knowland: 24        Thurmond: 51        266 needed to win

...Its an interesting night so far, seeing how well Thurmond is...

Florida goes for Thurmond. Strom Thurmond takes the sunshine state tonight, Florida goes to Thurmond.

Strom Thurmond Wins Florida
Roosevelt: 60        Knowland: 24        Thurmond: 59        266 needed to win

What is more intersting to watch is Thurmond's electoral vote total continue to rise. And Knowland is behind right now. Republicans were supposed to do well tonight, they just cannot seem to be catching much of a break.

We'll be back with more. Stay with us, we'll come back.

New Hampshire goes for senator Knowland, Bill Knowland takes New Hampshire tonight.

Bill Knowland Wins New Hampshire

Diddo in Connecticut. That great presidential belwhether state, drops for Knowland tonight.

Bill Knowland Wins Connecticut

And Indiana, that state has been hanging out there for more than an hour now. The hoosier state goes for the senator tonight.

Bill Knowland Wins Indiana

Lets now look at our electoral map as it stands after those three projections.
Roosevelt: 60        Knowland: 49        Thurmond: 59        266 needed to win

Senator Knowland starting to catch up.

He is and I think were getting to the point where he will over take both candidates. President Roosevelt is going to be the one loosing voters to Thurmond tonight.

We see in the returns, Thurmond not only doing well in the south but across the country. Could he carry some states outside of the south?

Its very possible, he appears to be performing very well so far by third party standards. Its a night to watch, no question about that.

Come back with us, two more states close their polls when we return. Stay with us, we'll come back.

Welcome back, we can report at this hour a very close race between President Roosevelt and Mr. Thurmond in the state of North Carolina. If we can project anything, its that senator Knowland will come in third place in North Carolina. Its undecided in North Carolina between Franklin Roosevelt and Strom Thurmond.

Diddo in Arkansas, Knowland comes in third there, but a very close race at this hour between Roosevelt and Thurmond. Undecided in Arkansas at this hour.

We can project a winner in the keystone state. Senator Knowland wins back Pennsylvania for the republicans, a key victory for the senator tonight.

Bill Knowland Wins Pennsylvania
Roosevelt: 60        Knowland: 84        Thurmond: 59        266 needed to win

We can also declare a winner in Delware. Senator Knowland wins in Delaware tonight.

Bill Knowland Wins Delaware
Roosevelt: 60        Knowland: 87        Thurmond: 59        266 needed to win

We can take a quick word from our panel.

Yes, notice what states we cannot project. Illinois, Ohio, Maryland. These are battleground states, the question is, can Roosevelt despite the depression, despite a strong republican challenger, despite a split in his own party. Can Roosevelt hold on by winning some of these big states, the question remains to be answered.

Theres a lot going against him tonight...

On top of all of that, the fact that since 1912, we've only had eight years of republican control of the White House.

Okay, back in a moment.

Indiana (projected result):
Roosevelt (i): 30.78%
Knowland: 36.58%
Thurmond: 31.58%

Connecticut (projected result):
Roosevelt (i): 29.91%
Knowland: 36.55%
Thurmond: 32.55%

Vermont (projected result):
Roosevelt (i): 18.92%
Knowland: 48.54%
Thurmond: 32.04%

Virgnia (projected result):
Roosevelt (i): 29.89%
Knowland: 28.04%
Thurmond: 41.35%

Florida (projected result):
Roosevelt (i): 30.82%
Knowland: 20.63%
Thurmond: 46.54%

Kentucky (projected result):
Roosevelt (i): 38.74%
Knowland: 28.48%
Thurmond: 32.27%

Good evening again and welcome back. It is 9 o'clock on the east coast and as more states have their polls close, we have some more projections. Lets look them over.

First in Arizona, we can declare that the Roosevelt vs Knowland vs Thurmond race is undecided at this hour in Arizona. Arizona undecided for the presidency at this hour.

Another close one in Colorado, undecided between the three candidates in Colorado at this hour.

In Kansas, heres one we can declare. Senator Knowland wins in Kansas tonight.

Bill Knowland Wins Kansas

In Louisiana, its all Thurmond there. Strom Thurmond takes another state as he carries Louisiana tonight.

Strom Thurmond Wins Louisiana

Michigan, that race undecided.

Exit polls and early vote data shows President Roosevelt in third place in that state, would be an upset if it went to Thurmond. It could happen tonight.

Minnesota, this will be a little bit of good news amidst all of this. Minnesota goes to the democrats tonight, as Franklin Roosevelt wins that state.

Franklin Roosevelt Wins Minnesota

An upset for the republicans there tonight. Minnesota voted republican in the last five presidential elections, last time it went a different way was 1924, voting for Bob LaFollette. Minnesota goes back to the democratic column tonight.

Nebraska. That state its not much of a contest there tonight, senator Knowland easily takes Nebraska.

Bill Knowland Wins Nebraska

President Roosevelt wins in New Mexico. Another surprise, maybe that its called so early. New Mexico stays in the democratic column tonight.

Franklin Roosevelt Wins New Mexico

In New York, headline of the hour, Strom Thurmond said to be very strong in New York state tonight, might be enough to carry the state. Roosevelt vs  Knowland vs Thurmond in New York is undecided at this hour.

We can declare Rhode Island for the President, Roosevelt holding his own as he takes Rhode Island.

Franklin Roosevelt Wins Rhode Island

South Dakota, the race there is undecided at this hour between the three candidates. Undeicded at least thus far in South Dakota.

Texas, another state that would make news if Thurmond took it. Senator Knowland expected to place third here, but a close race in the lone star state between President Roosevelt and Mr. Thurmond in Texas at this hour.

We have another close three way race in Wisconsin. Roosevelt vs Knowland vs Thurmond is undecided in Wisconsin at this hour.

And the state of Wyoming, Roosevelt vs Knowland vs Thurmond is undecided in Wyoming at this hour.

Lets now look at the updated electoral map.

Roosevelt: 79        Knowland: 101        Thurmond: 69        266 needed to win

That electoral count is refusing to budge for one candidate or the other.

I think one thing is becoming clear however, senator Knowland leads. Its a narrow lead and if Thurmond wasn't there, we could believe that Roosevelt would be leading right now. Senator Knowland leads tonight.

We'll be coming back, stay right here, we'll come back.

Notable Third Party Performance:

1824 election, 1860 election, 1924 election, 1948 election

This is an election 1948 update, we have two more states to declare. One of which is a major projection.

Ohio, the buckeye state, undecided for almost two hours now. Senator Bill Knowland wins the battleground state of Ohio. Ohio goes for Knowland, cannot be good news for democrats nationally tonight.

Bill Knowland Wins Ohio

We can also declare a winner in Tennessee, the volunteer state. Thurmond wins in Tennessee.

Strom Thurmond Wins Tennessee

Lets turn now to our electoral map...

nope hold it for a moment, Illinois goes for Knowland. Some bad news for the President and his camp at this hour, Illinois goes for senator Bill Knowland, the republican tonight.

Bill Knowland Wins Illinois

Diddo in Maryland. Maryland goes for the senator tonight.

Bill Knowland Wins Maryland

And this won't help anymore, South Dakota also goes republican tonight, stays in the republican column.

Bill Knowland Wins South Dakota

Lets now look at our electoral map as these projections are made.
Roosevelt: 79        Knowland: 166        Thurmond: 81        266 needed to win

We'll come back as election night 1948 coverage continues. Stay right here, we'll come back.

Big National News: Thurmond Takes New York
Welcome back again to our election night 1948 coverage. We have a major national projection, an upset for both major parties. Strom Thurmond wins in New York. A completley unexpected turn of events at the out set of this night. New York state goes for Mr. Thurmond tonight.

Strom Thurmond Wins New York
Roosevelt: 79        Knowland: 166        Thurmond: 128        266 needed to win

Its a night of surprises at the very least, President Roosevelt doing poorly at this hour.

How does this happen? I guess we can ask, New York would have been expected to go to either Knowland or Roosevelt, probably Knowland. But, it goes for a states rights party candidate.

Thurmond leading in New York city and competetive with the republican candidate upstate. Roosevelt just running behind there tonight. Interesting turn of events.

We'll be back with more election 1948 coverage, come back, this is a historic night indeed.

We can declare the state of Michigan for the senator. Bill Knowland wins in Michigan tonight.

Bill Knowland Wins Michigan

We can also make a projection at this hour for the united states senate. Republicans will control the united states senate in the next congress, however the house of representatives is undecided at this hour, republicans do lead there. The house control could become key if no candidate recieves 266 electoral votes or more tonight. Republicans, however, we can declare will control the united states senate.

Republicans Retain Control of the United States Senate

Roosevelt: 79        Knowland: 185        Thurmond: 128        266 needed to win

We'll come back as polls close in six more western states coming up. Stay right here with us, we'll come back.

This is just one election out of many. Keep in mind New York 1948 in real life showed one of the strongest third party performances outside of the south.
