"My fellow Americans, there is more we want to do and it just cannot end now, I am a candidate for a third and final term to the presidency..."

President McKinley made news with an announcement in January of 1908 answering rumors that had been running wild, he made it official, that he and vice president Roosevelt would both be candidates for reelection to their offices that November. President McKinley noted that this would, win or loose, be his last campaign.

Over the last four years, with the help of vice President Roosevelt, the administration had worked to build a Panama Canal Treaty, however this treaty was having trouble finding to support to be passed. McKinley announced that this would be one of his major goals for a third administration. On the economic front, unemployment had gone up just two percentage points over the last four years, this was not bad for McKinley, but still unemployment was slowly going up across the country.

McKinley's chances for his own third term? It looked pretty good as the President's approval rating sat at 47% approve, could be better, but not bad for an incumbent President seeking a third term. William Jennings Bryan won the democratic nomination for President of the United States. Bryan produced a strong running mate when he selected William McAdoo of California as his running mate.

The Bryan/McAdoo ticket left the convention with a lot of polls saying a lot of different things. The McKinley/Roosevelt camp didn't believe the polls when they showed a ten point lead for the democratic ticket over the incumbent ticket. The Bryan/McAdoo ticket ran a strong campaign for the presidency, the republicans narrowed the lead but only to five.

The final poll before election day looked like the following:

William McKinley/Theodore Roosevelt (i): 42%
William Jennings Bryan/William McAdoo:  47%
Other:                                                     5%
Undecided:                                               6%

At least going in, democrats are starting to smell victory in the air. Election night coverage begins next.

McKinley Fails to Get Even One Percent of the Vote in South Carolina, but Carries Vermont. Democrats Smell Victory in the Air.
It is 7 o'clock on the east coast and we have some projections. Bad news for republicans, most of them are for democrats.

In Florida, a strong democratic state, goes to Bryan. William Jennings Bryan wins in Florida.

William Jennings Bryan Wins Florida

In Georgia, part of the democratic solid south, does it again. Bryan wins easily in Georgia.

William Jennings Bryan Wins Georgia

In Indiana, this was a hard fought state throughout this campaign, both President McKinley and William Jennings Bryan. The McKinley White House would consider it very bad news if they lost Indiana. Will they loose it? We can't say yet, Indiana is undecided at this time. Too close to call in Indiana.

In Kentucky, this is a state that went republican for the first time in a long time four years ago. The President didn't expect to win here this time as the polls got worse for him, but it could happen. Undecided at this hour in Kentucky.

In South Carolina, a very easy win for the democrats. So easy, get this, headline of the hour possibly, President McKinley getting less than one percent of the vote in the state of South Carolina. William Jennings Bryan wins very, very easily in South Carolina tonight.

William Jennings Bryan Wins South Carolina

In Vermont, one piece of good news for the President at this hour, President McKinley wins in Vermont tonight. Vermont for McKinley.

William McKinley Wins Vermont

And finally in Virgnia, another piece of the strong democratic solid south. Bryan wins in Virgnia easily tonight.

William Jennings Bryan Wins Virgnia
McKinley: 4        Bryan: 39        242 needed to win

Come back, stay with us. Election night 1908 continues.

It is now 7:30 on the east coast and two more states have had their polls close. West Virgnia and Ohio both have their polls closed, lets see if we have any projections.

In Ohio, a classic republican state, will it be so again tonight? We can't say just yet, its undecided

Also in West Virgnia, Bryan led there early in the campaign, McKinley tried to close the gap. Will it be enough, we'll find out, its undecided.

Those two projections at this moment. Stay with us at election night 1908.

Bryan Carries Both Ohio and Indiana. He Crosses Well Over the 100 Electoral Vote Mark.
Welcome back, that is the headline of the hour. Polls have closed in a handfull of states across the country. We have some projections, lets look them over.

First in Indiana, this was a state that the President needed to hold onto and considered critical. Well, bad news for the White House, Indiana falls to Bryan and the democrats. Indiana for Bryan.

William Jennings Bryan Wins Indiana

Also in Ohio, additional bad news for the White House. This was a state that the republicans thought they had made a comeback in, they may have still, but it won't be enough. We are ready to project that Ohio also goes to Bryan tonight.

William Jennings Bryan Wins Ohio

Now lets go to some more, in Alabama, part of the democratic solid south, does it again. Bryan wins big in Alabama.

William Jennings Bryan Wins Alabama

Connecticut, a state that is usually considered a belwhether in presidential elections. William McKinley facing a stiff challenge in his race for a third consecutive term tonight. Remember, in another big headline election, Connecticut put President Cleveland over the top in 1896, that year, Cleveland defeated McKinley. Will Connecticut again be the heartbreaker for McKinley tonight? We don't know, its undecided.

In Delaware, we can declare that state as undecided right now. Too close to call in Delaware.

Diddo in Illinois, undecided there too.

I think if McKinley is going to come back tonight, Illinois and probably Connecitcut are going to be part of the heart of his come back. Its a tough road against a strong challenger for the President tonight.

Lets continue on with our projections, in Maine, finally some good news for the White House. William McKinley, President McKinley wins in Maine.

William McKinley Wins Maine

In a surprise, we can declare that Maryland will go to Bryan tonight. More bad news for McKinley, Bryan takes Maryland for the democrats tonight.

William Jennings Bryan Wins Maryland

In Massachussetts, traditionally republican, does so again tonight, going for McKinley.

William McKinley Wins Massachussetts

Can we make a call? We can, Missouri goes for Bryan. Big win for him there.

William Jennings Bryan Wins Missouri

In New Hampshire, New Hampshire stays in the republican column and goes again for the President tonight.

William McKinley Wins New Hampshire

We can say in New Jersey, its undecided.

In Oklahoma, big win for Bryan there. William Jennings Bryan wins in Oklahoma for the democrats.

William Jennings Bryan Wins Oklahoma

Pennsylvania, we can declare that Pennsylvania will stay in the republican column and go for McKinley tonight. McKinley wins in Pennsylvania.

William McKinley Wins Pennsylvania

In South Dakota, the President trying to stay at least in striking distance of Bryan, it could happen. McKinley wins in South Dakota.

William McKinley Wins South Dakota

In Tennessee. Tennessee goes easily for Bryan tonight.

William Jennings Bryan Wins Tennessee

And finally in Texas. the lone star state goes for Bryan tonight. Texas for Bryan.

William Jennings Bryan Wins Texas

Okay, so lets look at the electoral map as it stands after all of those calculations are tallied in.

McKinley: 68         Bryan: 151        242 needed to win

Bryan seems to have a big lead right now. I might fall short of calling it a commanding lead though. But, certainly he is strongly favored at this hour.

McKinley has shown some signs of his not giving up just yet. Massachussetts, South Dakota, that big win in Pennsylvania...

I think the President is just struggling to get air at this moment.

He has won states such as Massachussetts, South Dakota, and Pennsylvania, lets add Connecticut to that list. William McKinley has won the bellwhether state of Connecticut.

William McKinley Wins Connecticut
McKinley: 75        Bryan: 151        242 needed to win

Connecitcut is known to choose Presidents.

Look, we are not conceeding Connecitcut. Its a state that we felt good about going into tonight.

If our projection holds up there and we think it will, will this hurt you out west?

Well, you know, Mr. McAdoo is from California and we expect him to help us carry that state later tonight.

Reason I was asking is because Connecitcut is a belwhether and is sometimes known to affect voter turnout in the west where people still have some up to two hours left to vote.

We think democrats will be strong in the west but theres a lot to go before we get there. The south is not all filled in yet, Bryan expects to be strong there. Theres New York, Illinois. Were in it to win it.

Okay, were coming back at election night 1908 coverage. Stay with us.

In Arkansas, voted narrowly for the President last time, but not to be tonight. Arkansas easily in the column for William Jennings Bryan.

Louisiana, a part of the democratic solid south. Louisiana for Bryan tonight.

William Jennings Bryan Wins Louisiana

A little piece of good news for the republicans, Michigan drops to McKinley tonight. Michigan for McKinley tonight.

Welcome back, we have anothe declaration to tell you about at this time. Minnesota, a state which republicans have carried in the past elections does it again tonight. McKinley wins in Minnesota

William McKinley Wins Minnesota
McKinley: 116        Bryan: 204        242 needed to win

Any thoughts from our panel...

First of all, people have been comparing this election to 1896 more recently. Those are two different electoral maps. Because Bryan has more appeal than Cleveland in the west for example. While McKinley's strongest region might be the east tonight. Cleveland was from New York, in the east, and Bryan really doesn't have a lot of connection there.

That might have been shown in the Connecticut result. Does the President stand any chance tonight?

With the democrat crossing the 200 electoral vote mark so early, its hard to see. If Bryan were to carry New York, then he would be the next President. But, he can do it without New York. Illinois and Kansas might get him there. Theres also Wisconsin...

McKinley does lead in Wisconsin right now.

Well, it could happen in the west and one of either Illinois or New York...Bryan is still favored.

And any hope for McKinley?

He would probably need both New York and Illinois. We'll see what happens in the west.

More to come on election night 1908 coverage. Stay with us.

BREAKING NEWS
Yes, breaking news. New York to McKinley. This keeps the President in the race and republicans in the white house must be breathing a sigh of relief. If there was any northeastern state both campaigns were watching the most, it was New York...

William McKinley Wins New York
McKinley: 155        Bryan: 204        242 needed to win

New York with its thirty-nine electoral votes would have been enough to put Bryan over the top. However, New York stuck with the republicans and went to McKinley again tonight. Doesn't mean the race is over for Bryan, not at all, he has a big lead. But, it has to be a disappointment. This probably indicates that it will be a longer night than hoped for on the democratic side.

Lets come back soon, New York going to McKinley. Polls close in some more western states at the 10 o'clock hour. Stay with us.

McKinley Carries Wisconsin. Picks Up a Few More Electoral Votes. Bryan Still Holds Big Lead.
Welcome back to our election night coverage. It is 10 o'clock on the east coast.

We can declare that first of all President McKinley will win Wisconsin. Wisconsin drops for McKinley tonight.

William McKinley Wins Wisconsin

In Idaho, William Jennings Bryan put up a tough fight there. Hoping to carry the state for democrats. He might, its undecided.

In Iowa, another close race there. Between Bryan and McKinley, its undecided at this hour.

Diddo in Montana, its undecided there too.

In Nevada, however, heres a projection. Keeping his big lead, William Jennings Bryan wins in Nevada, Bryan wins in Nevada.

William Jennings Bryan Wins Nevada

In North Dakota, however, good news for McKinley. William McKinley wins in North Dakota. A win for the President in North Dakota.

William McKinley Wins North Dakota

And finally in Utah, its undecided there as well. Undecided in Utah.

Lets look and see how that changes the electoral map.

Hold on, I'm told we have big news, McKinley wins both Illinois and Wyoming. This helps the White House big time, big time. McKinley is still in this race as he carries Illinois and Wyoming. This might not be over at this hour. Major Projections for the President, who was perceived to be behind in the polls, wins big electoral vote states of Illinois and Wyoming tonight.

William McKinley Wins Wyoming

William McKinley Wins Illinois

Now, lets look at our electoral map after this big news.
McKinley: 202        Bryan: 207        242 needed to win

Suddenly it becomes a close race for the presidency.

This is a surprise, on both sides in a way. I mean it comes down probably to some of these western states. And good news for Bryan, hes expected to do well in the west, his running mate is from California.

And Nevada might be a sign of western strength for Bryan tonight. We'll keep our eyes on that. More to come. McKinley starting to make this a close race, can he pull it out? Maybe not. Stay with us.

More Projections
Welcome back, we can declare that in Kentucky....

William Jennings Bryan Wins Kentucky

Kentucky must have been making some democrats wet their pants tonight, taking so long to be called and seeing the electoral vote tally grow as tight as it is. However, the leak can end for democrats as yes, Kentucky will go to Bryan tonight. However, we can declare, that both Idaho and Utah, Idaho and Utah will both go for the President tonight. McKinley wins in Idaho and Utah.

William McKinley Wins Utah

William McKinley Wins Idaho

McKinley: 208        Bryan: 220        242 needed to win

We have two more projections. In Iowa, McKinley, the President wins it tonight. For the first time, taking the lead in the electoral college vote count tonight.

William McKinley Wins Iowa

And in West Virgnia, this took a long time to call. Here McKinley wins it again. West Virgnia for the President.

William McKinley Wins West Virgnia

Lets look at the electoral map after these projections.
McKinley: 228        Bryan: 220         242 needed to win

Well, has the tide turned again tonight?

I think it might have. The west coast from what we are hearing, polls have not closed yet. But from what we are hearing, it does not look good for William Jennings Bryan on the west coast. If that is true, President McKinley becomes the first republican to win a third consecutive term to the White House.

Is this a surprise for democrats?

To some extent, but also many in the democratic party believed the polling recently to be too good to be true.

We'll be coming back. Stay with us.

McKinley Wins: First Republican to Win Three Terms to Presidency
William McKinley, a man who has already served two terms as President, will be returned for a final four year term. He wins narrowly tonight.

This is bad news for the democrats who believed they would win going into tonight.

McKinley wins a third term to the presidency tonight.

Willam McKinley Wins 1908 Presidential Election

William McKinley Wins California

William McKinley Wins Washington

William McKinley Wins Oregon

McKinley: 247        Bryan: 220        242 needed to win

And that is obviously a major projection.

Democrats performed better in this election than in any since 1896, but it still wasn't enough. McKinley reelected.

And we know democrats tried to make an issue out of the economy, but it really is not that bad.

Its not that bad, and William Jennings Bryan doesn't have a strong national following either. He is stronger in some western states, but sometimes thats not enough to win him the election. Some major wins for McKinley were Connecticut, New York, Illinois, and California. All are places where Bryan tried to be competetive, but frankly failed.

He did loose his homestate, maybe depriving him of some kind of mandate.

There is not much of a mandate for him. But, I don't think the McKinley people are worried about that. Hes retiring at the end of this coming term anyway.

Lets come back. McKinley wins, still a few more states to be projected. Come back, stay with us.

President McKinley enters victorious into his third and final presidential term. This term was mixed for the three term incumbent republican. The first two years saw a strong economic situation and realative peace abroad. However, in the final two years, the bottom began to fall out of the economy and the economy went into a recession. There were signs of trouble and disruption in Europe.

As thought began to go to 1912, it was a wide known fact that President McKinley would not run for an unprecedented fourth term. McKinley confirmed that he would not run at a White House press conference. In a surprise to some, vice president Roosevelt also announced that he would not run for the republican nomination either.

On the democratic side, William Jennings Bryan announced that he would not run again in 1912 for the presidency. Thomas Marshall won the nomination for the presidency on the democratic side. He selected Alton Parker as his running mate. The ticket left the convention with a five point lead over the republican ticket.

That republican ticket was made up of former Kentucky governor Augustus Wilson. Wilson selected New Jersey governor Franklin Murphy as his running mate. The inner republican groups had high hopes for the ticket, but they left the convention behind in the polls.

In the middle of the fall campaign, unemployment only went higher and the economy got worse. Going into election night, the democrats looked poised to retake the White House after twelve years of republican control there. The Marshall/Parker ticket led the republican ticket by nine percentage points on the Monday before election day.

A nine point lead looks good for democrats. Do the returns reflect that and the democrats return to the White House? Only the results will tell. Election night 1912 begins next.
