Good evening again and welcome back. President Roosevelt gains a few more electoral votes as some western states go his way. Roosevelt still remains far behind in the electoral vote count.
First in Montana, in a three way race, Roosevelt takes the state of Montana tonight.
Franklin Roosevelt Wins Montana
Diddo in Utah, President Roosevelt takes Utah.
Apparantly the President is taller than his opponents.
Franklin Roosevelt Wins Utah
We can declare the Roosevelt vs Knowland vs Thurmond race in Idaho to be undecided at this hour. Undecided in Idaho tonight.
The race in Iowa, is also undecided at this hour. Thurmond showing strength tonight outside of the south.
We can declare Arkansas for Thurmond. North Carolina for example remains too close to call at this hour.
Strom Thurmond Wins Arkansas
We can also declare the state of Arizona for the President. Roosevelt wins in Arizona tonight.
Franklin Roosevelt Wins Arizona
We can declare a very close three way race Roosevelt vs Knowland vs Thurmond in Nevada at this hour. Undecided in Nevada at this hour.
And finally we can declare senator Knowland to be the winner in North Dakota tonight. North Dakota goes for Bill Knowland over Franklin Roosevelt and Strom Thurmond.
Bill Knowland Wins North Dakota
Roosevelt: 91 Knowland: 189 Thurmond: 137 266 needed to win
Well, how does it pan out right now? Lets turn to our panel. Can any of the three candidates still win outright tonight?
Oh mathmatically its still possible for senator Knowland to win. I think he can win, hes done well in regions of the country where he needs to do well tonight. New York might be a blow to the Knowland camp however.
Anything for the White House to be happy about tonight?
If this election goes to the house, they are going to be on the phone with state delegations and congressmen...
Franklin Roosevelt Wins Colorado
Hold that, we have just given the state of Colorado to President Roosevelt.
And this is what they want to see happen, if this race goes to the house of representative, it remains a competetive three way race where anyone can win frankly. If New York doesn't help the republicans, it gives some aid to the democrats tonight.
Roosevelt: 97 Knowland: 189 Thurmond: 128 266 needed to win
Major projection, Texas goes to Roosevelt. This thing is going to the house of representativs offical at 10:30 PM on election night. The house will be choosing the President, senate vice president for the first time since 1824. Wisconsin also drops for senator Knowland tonight.
Franklin Roosevelt Wins Texas
Bill Knowland Wins Wisconsin
1948 United States Presidential Election Goes to House of Representatives
Roosevelt: 120 Knowland: 201 Thurmond: 137 266 needed to win
A major projection at this hour. So what does this mean?
It means a lot of things, one of which we could have a divided government for the first time since the time of George Washington and John Adams. The President could be of one party and the vice president of another.
Any chance for Roosevelt?
Yes, that is another big headline tonight. Roosevelt, despite doing poorly at this hour in the electoral college vote count, could end up President for another four years. When it goes to the house of representatives, its a whole new ball game.
Were coming back with more on this major projection and any other states to be called. Come right back with us for me. Election night 1948 coverage.
New York (projected result):
Roosevelt (i): 27.01%
Knowland: 32.99%
Thurmond: 39.25%

Thurmond: 40.11%
New Mexico (projected result):

Thurmond: 31.55%
Ohio (projected result):

Welcome again to our election 1948 coverage. We have another declaration, in the state of Wyoming. Franklin Roosevelt wins in Wyoming tonight. Wyoming goes back to the democrats tonight despite all of this.
Franklin Roosevelt Wins Wyoming
North Carolina. That state has been outstanding for a long time tonight, despite Thurmond doing very well in the south and across the country, the President takes North Carolina tonight.
Franklin Roosevelt Wins North Carolina
Roosevelt: 137 Knowland: 201 Thurmond: 137 266 needed to win
11 o'clock on east coast: CA, OR, WA ALL TOO CLOSE TO CALL
Yes, its 11 o'clock on the east coast. All states have their polls closed across the country offically at this hour. Three more states: California, Oregon, and Washington have closed their polls. All are too close to call, we'll look them over.
California, the golden state. Twenty five electoral votes is not enough to give Knowland a victory tonight, but it would be a good prize going into the house of representatives. The race in California in the Roosevelt vs Knowland vs Thurmond is undecded at this hour.
Oregon, we can say that senator Knowland leads here in the state of Oregon. The race however here in Oregon is too close to call at this hour.
Same story in Washington state. Washington state is also undecided at this hour.
Roosevelt: 137 Knowland: 201 Thurmond: 137 266 needed to win
The electoral map doesn't change at the top of the 11 o'clock hour. All three states closing their polls at the top of this hour are undecided as well as Nevada, Idaho, and Iowa at this hour, election goes to the house of representatives.
A historic election, one that will be remembered no matter who wins in the house for President and senate for vice president, its hard to find a stronger third party challenge than what Strom Thurmond has provided tonight. We'll be back with more election coverage, election night 1948 coverage continues after this. Stay with us, we'll come back.
Roosevelt: 137 Knowland: 201 Thurmond: 137 266 needed to win

Welcome again to our election night 1948 coverage. Nationally, the election will go to the house of representatives, as we have projected none of the three candidates by our projections will reach the 266 electoral votes needed to win the presidency outright. We can declare two more states, both for the senator.
In Iowa, a traditionally republican state does it again, despite a strong showing by Mr. Thurmond. Thurmond thought he might just might carry the state, but its not to be. Bill Knowland wins in Iowa tonight.
Bill Knowland Wins Iowa
We can also declare Knowland the winner in Nevada. Nevada goes for the republican tonight.
Bill Knowland Wins Nevada
Washington state, this just coming in now. President Roosevelt takes Washington state tonight.
Franklin Roosevelt Wins Washington
And in Oregon, senator Knowland takes Oregon tonight.
Bill Knowland Wins Oregon
Roosevelt: 145 Knowland: 220 Thurmond: 137 266 needed to win
Were coming back, two more states to call. Stay right here with us, we'll come back.

Major Projection: First New York, now California
Good evening again, we can make the final two projections of this election night coverage. First, another big one for Thurmond. Strom Thurmond, in an upset wins in California. Mr. Thurmond has carried the golden state tonight, California goes in his column.
Strom Thurmond Wins California
We can also declare the state of Idaho. Idaho goes into the republican column tonight for senator Knowland. Bill Knowland wins in Idaho.
Bill Knowland Wins Idaho
Roosevelt: 145 Knowland: 224 Thurmond: 172 266 needed to win
Well at the end of this, the election remains we can say undecided. The house of representatives decides the Presidency and the senate the vice presidency. To everyone who has been a part of this 1948 election night coverage, and to my readers, thank you. Theres more to come and we look forward to being back again covering more elections in the future. Thanks again.

...Idaho casts its vote for President Franklin Delano Roosevelt
A cheer from the democrats with that, Idaho sends the presidential race to a second ballot in the house.
...Oregon. Oregon has the floor.
...Oregon votes for Bill Knowland
Mr. Speaker, there is no majority plus one and victory for either candidate, a second ballot is called.

Franklin Roosevelt (i): 19
Bill Knowland: 24

The President lived to fight on to a second ballot when Idaho went for the President keeping the republican senator Knowland just one delagation short of victory. We will bring you the coverage of the second ballot roll call when that begins. Back with that, election 1948 coverage.

Just popped in here to see how things were going. Then I got shocked. How did Strom Thurmond pick up NY and CA? Two large states that are the home states of the two main candidates. As well, I don't think Thurmond even got on the ballot in RL. Thurmond doesn't have what it takes to win over one third of the vote in such large, diverse states.

Washington. Washington state has the floor
...Mr. Speaker, Washington state votes for our great President Franklin Delano Roosevelt...
Second Ballot Count:
Franklin Roosevelt (i): 22
Bill Knowland: 21
25 needed to win
This is just crunch time for the President and the senator.
...Maryland. The Maryland state delegation has the floor. Maryland you have one vote, how do you cast it?
...Mr. Speaker, our vote is cast for senator Bill Knowland, the republican.
Second Ballot Count:
Franklin Roosevelt (i): 22
Bill Knowland: 22
25 needed to win
Wisconsin...
...Mr. Speaker, we want to take a moment to thank Mr. Thurmond for his service to our nation and his inspiring performance for future third party candidates in this election. He did well in our state for a third party candidate, but one man came in first in Wisconsin. And that man and our vote is for senator Bill Knowland.
Second Ballot Count:
Franklin Roosevelt (i): 22
Bill Knowland: 23
25 needed to win
One more for Knowland, and this race is going to a third ballot in the house. If Roosevelt wins all three, he has won reelection to a third term. The republican only needs two to win the White House...

Breaking News from Washington: Roosevelt Wins Third Term
Final House Balloting:
Franklin Roosevelt (i): 25
Bill Knowland: 23
25 needed to win
Certainly a historic result tonight. Lets turn to our panel. Did anyone see this coming?
The whole strategy of the Roosevelt camp was to keep Bill Knowland under 266 electoral votes on election day. If that happened, the White House would do everything in the book to win over congressmen and state delegations to earn their votes in the house vote, and it worked.
Was Thurmond thought to perform stronger in the house?
He was, but I think the fact that Thurmond won only five state delegations in the house and had no chance to win. That fact was tribute to the Roosevelt camp in their post election day 1948 effort. Roosevelt reelected, an amazing thing tonight.
Not only that, but Cordell Hull.
Vice President Hull won in the senate. In an election where everything was going against them, they pulled it out.
This has been our election night 1948 coverage, thanks to all of our readers, we'll see you again. Final election results will be coming up right after this.

President Roosevelt in early 1950 announced to the surprise of no one that he would not run for reelection in 1952. The retirement of the last 1920s and 1930s democrat would bring a fresh face to the American political scene. Democrats nominated West Virgnia governor Okey Patterson for President and Frances Perkins, a Roosevelt loyalist and governor of Massachussetts, was put on the ticket as the vice presidential running mate. The republicans saw a newcomer on the political horizon. Ross Rizley, an Oklahoma congressman, won the republican nomination for President in an upset at the convention. Rizley selected former presidential nominee and governor of New York, Thomas Dewey as his running mate.
The election that brought new blood to the political scene was competetive, Rizley went into election day however with a lead that was falling, but still a lead. Can the republicans bring their new leader into the White House and the first republican administration since the early 1930s? Do the democrats win again? Those questions are answered as only time will tell. Election night 1952 begins next.

Cleveland Wins as Connecticut goes by just 500 votes
Connecticut and Illinois. Smith reelected
turn of the century and on: election 1952
Hearst Conceeds in New York, McKinley by a Landslide.
11 o'clock on the east coast, tide turns. McKinley wins third term.
Good evening and welcome to election night 1952 coverage. In a race between democrat Okey Patterson and republican Ross Rizley, Rizley held a long lead but the contest became a close horse race in the final weeks. 7 o'clock has come on the east coast and we have some states to close their polls, lets look over the information we have.
In Georgia, a state yet to vote with a republican for President in this century, democrats do it again. Governor Patterson wins in the peach state.
Okey Patterson
Georgia 12 electoral votes
We can declare Patterson the winner in another state at this hour, the bluegrass state. Patterson wins in Kentucky.
Okey Patterson
Kentucky 10 electoral votes
In Vermont, we can declare congressman Rizley the winner in Vermont tonight.
Ross Rizley
Vermont 3 electoral votes
In the hoosier state, a lot of these states projections are able to be made at this hour. Indiana goes for Ross Rizley tonight.
Ross Rizley
Indiana 13 electoral votes
In a surprise at this hour, we cannot declare a winner in South Carolina. The race between Patterson and Rizley is undecided at this hour in South Carolina.
Okey Patterson vs Ross Rizley
South Carolina 8 electoral votes
Diddo in Virgnia, the race is undecided in Virgnia tonight.
Okey Patterson vs Ross Rizley
Virgnia 12 electoral votes
Lets now turn and look at the electoral map at this hour.
Patterson: 22 Rizley: 16 266 needed to win
Lets now turn to our panel. Any thoughts on the race so far tonight?
South Carolina is a surprise at this hour. This is the state that would give the democrat ninety percent of the vote in some races and was part of the democratic solid south.
Any chance it could go republican?
The question is how far does this new group of national politicians reach on either side. Certainly apparantly Vermont is staying in place for republicans and a state like Georiga for democrats.
Ross Rizley, is he another Augustus King?
I don't believe so, he is certainly more competent...
and running in a better year for republicans than 1912.
The status of the race at this hour?
A close horse race between the two, intersting notes if any Kentucky or Indiana usually swing states, both went early one republican and one democrat.
Georgia projected result:
Okey Patterson: 73.7%
Ross Rizley: 25.8%
Other: 0.5%
Indiana projected result:
Okey Patterson: 45.4%
Ross Rizley: 53.6%
Other: 1.0%

Good evening again, we are going ahead and make some more declarations. The polls have closed in seventeen more states since we were last with you here at election night 1952 coverage. Lets look over the information that we have.
In Ohio, usually a republican state but sometimes goes democratic. The buckeye state is undecided at this hour.
Okey Patterson vs Ross Rizley
Ohio 25 electoral votes
In West Virgnia however we can make a declaration. Governor Patterson takes his home state tonight with around fifty six percent of the vote. A surprise there for republicans.
Okey Patterson
West Virgnia 8 electoral votes
We can declare a winner in Alabama. Governor Patterson wins in Alabama. Question still to be answered, what affect does the republican nominee being a southerner have on the returns. So far, no real change.
Okey Patterson
Alabama 11 electoral votes
In Connecticut, that great belwhether state in presidential politics, we can declare that state as undecided at this hour.
Okey Patterson vs. Ross Rizley
Connecticut 8 elecotral votes
Diddo in Delaware, undecided in Delaware at this hour.
Okey Patterson vs Ross Rizley
Delaware 3 electoral votes
In Florida, that race is undecided at this hour. Florida was the first state to vote republican against Al Smith twice, will the sunshine state do it again with the a southerner heading the republican ticket? We can say at this hour, its undecided in Florida.
Okey Patterson vs. Ross Rizley
Florida 10 electoral votes
Same story in Illinois. That race is undecided at this hour.
Okey Patterson vs Ross Rizley
Illinois 27 electoral votes
Maine. We finally have a declaration and its for the republican. Congressman Rizley takes the state of Maine tonight, rather easily.
Ross Rizley
Maine 5 electoral votes
We can say at this hour that the race in Maryland is undecided.
Okey Patterson vs. Ross Rizley
Maryland 9 electoral votes
A lot of close races tonight. Massachussetts is also undecided at this hour tonight.
Okey Patterson vs. Ross Rizley
Massachussetts 16 electoral votes
We can declare a winner in Mississippi. Mississippi goes for governor Patterson tonight.
Okey Patterson
Mississippi 8 electoral votes
We can delcare a winner in Missouri at this hour. Governor Patterson wins in Missouri, that will be a disappointment for republicans.
Okey Patterson
Missouri 13 electoral votes
We can delcare a winner in New Hampshire. Congressman Ross Rizley takes New Hampshire.
Ross Rizley
New Hampshire 4 electoral votes
We can delcare that in New Jersey, that race is undecided at this hour. Ross Rizley leads in New Jersey but we cannot yet call that race at this hour.
Okey Patterson vs. Ross Rizley
New Jersey 16 electoral votes
Oklahoma. Oklahoma, Rizley's home state is undecided at this hour. We cannot make a call in the state of Oklahoma.
Okey Patterson vs Ross Rizley
Oklahoma 8 electoral votes
We can delcare that in Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania is undecided at this hour. As we said, a lot of states not making a projection.
Okey Patterson vs Ross Rizley
Pennsylvania 32 electoral votes
We can declare a winner in Tennessee. Governor Patterson wins in Tennessee, another disappointment for republicans there tonight.
Okey Patterson
Tennessee 11 electoral votes
Texas is another state where the race between Patterson and Rizley is undecided at this hour.
Okey Patterson vs. Ross Rizley
Texas 24 electoral votes
Lets now look at the electoral map as it stands at this hour.
Patterson: 73 Rizley: 25 266 needed to win
That election looks to be close at this hour, some disappointments for republicans.
It was a wild card as to what affect the first southerner at the head of a republican ticket would have in this 1952 election, would an establishment republican as his running mate hurt or help him. New York is going to be intersting.
The democrats made a smart choice this year with their nominee.
They did by picking a fresh face, that has not been connected with the last twenty years of the democratic party. An election where people are supposedly wanting change, that could still be the case. But a fresh face democrat can hold his own at this hour.
Were coming back with more eleciton night coverage. Stay right here with us, we'll come back.

Welcome back to election night 1952 coverage. Lets turn to our panel as we just made a series of projections. Connecticut, the great belwhether state going for the democrat tonight.
Thats a surprise, something that a lot of people were not expecting. I think the Rizley camp will have a hard time explaining that loss tonight, they are not conceeding Connecticut at this point, but if our projections hold up, then it will be the case that they loose Connecticut.
Was there anyone expecting that...
Okey Patterson
Florida 10 electoral votes
We have another call, the sunshine state goes for Okey Patterson tonight. Not much of a surprise there.
Well, it might be though. Congressman Rizley is seeing his southern roots mean practically nothing tonight.
Patterson: 150 Rizley: 41 266 needed to win
Its not only his southern roots though it seems at this hour, Connecticut goes against him and Massachussetts, the governor leads there. These were supposed to be republican states tonight.
I find it fascinating, on a night when a republican will by all accounts win nationally, the electorate won't give him a landslide.
Back in a moment.

Big Lead for Rizley Expected at 11 o'clock, its a lead but not a big one.
Welcome back, 11 o'clock on the east coast. First a projection from earlier that some expected. Utah, a state that started to go to the republicans this campaign does. Congressman Ross Rizley wins in Utah.
Ross Rizley
Utah 4 electoral votes
Another declaration for Rizley as Oregon goes his way. Ross Rizley takes the state of Oregon.
Ross Rizley
Oregon 6 electoral votes
In California, the golden state. Governor Patterson made a late effort there and polls seemed to close, it might go for him. Its undecided at this hour in California.
Okey Patterson vs. Ross Rizley
California 32 electoral votes
That state could be decisive. We can also say that Washington state, at this hour is undecided.
Okey Patterson vs. Ross Rizley
Washington 9 electoral votes
Another state is Nevada, we can declare that state to be undecided at this hour. Undecided in Nevada between Patterson and Rizley.
Okey Patterson vs. Ross Rizley
Nevada 3 electoral votes
Lets look at our now updated electoral map
Patterson: 201 Rizley: 209 266 needed to win
Lets turn to our election night panel at this relatively late hour of the night, all of the polls have closed across the nation...Nevada goes for Rizley. Ross Rizley wins in Nevada. I'm sorry panel to interrupt
Thats expected, Nevada for the republican.
Ross Rizley
Nevada 3 electoral votes
Patterson: 201 Rizley: 212 266 needed to win
Sorry panel, we had that projection.
No problem, were still here. As always
This is a cliff hanger of a race in one that people would have assumed the republican would do very well.
Well first of all I believe it was a smart decision for democrats to nominate a new democrat tonight. Okey Patterson is a successful governor and has a shot at becoming President tonight.
Any states that your watching at this hour?
Still New York and Pennsylvania. Those are some major states, its getting to that time where if one candidate were to win both, it would be a win for that candidate.
If they split...
If they split, then probably it comes down to California.
Back in a moment.
