Roy Cooper has announced he won't run for Governor.

I say we draft Larry Kissell. Shuler and McIntyre at least have a fighting chance in their districts; I really don't see hoe Kissell holds his new district anyway.

Roy Cooper has announced he won't run for Governor.

Today or long time ago ?

Today.

"Thursday morning Attorney General Roy Cooper immediately said in a press release that he was not interested in running for Governor."

PPP is saying that the Democrats should run Erskine Bowles:

"We've tested a number of Democratic alternatives to Bev Perdue over the last year and Bowles was the only one who didn't trail McCrory. In October we found the two tied at 42%....

...In 2004 Bowles was burdened by a Kerry/Edwards ticket that was very weak in North Carolina and lost the state by 12 points.  What people might forget is that Bowles lost by only 5 points, outrunning the Presidential ticket by 7.  The Presidential landscape in North Carolina has changed dramatically since 2004 and with the state looking like a dead heat if Bowles could outrun Obama by just 2-3 points he'd probably find himself in the Governor's Mansion."

North Carolina hasn't elected a Republican governor since 1988 (an incredibly long losing streak). Why are the Dems suddenly lacking any backups to replace Bev Perdue? Their gubernatorial candidates have outperformed the national nominee in every single contest since 1992 and they have quite a few centrist current and former congressmen who'd ostensibly be competitive candidates.

Its because McCrory is an especially strong candidate.

If he wasn't running again, I'm pretty sure Perdue would be running for reelection. PPP tested a few non-McCrory Republicans against her and she was ahead.

Didn't he get like 70% in the 9th district in 2008, while McCain got 55%?

Pretty close. In the new 9th, Obama got 45% while Perdue got 32%.

What was the old ninth?

Pretty similar. 65% McCrory, 55% McCain.

His strength in Mecklenburg county was impressive. He ran 12 points ahead of McCain (49 vs. 37).

That could be good news for McCory as well.

Brad Miller is also considering a run now as well. I just seen that on my local news
I told Miller I'd support him if he ran, but I think it's best for Dems to line up behind Dalton at this point.

Mike McIntyre has ruled out running for Governor. He's staying where Democrats need him most; in his Congressional race.

I'm still waiting for Brad Miller to make a decision. He said he'd make up his mind last weekend...

Of course...its called Republican redistricting.

This could be something of a perfect storm for NC Democrats.

2008 seemed like our high-water mark, with Obama winning the state, Hagan thumping Dole and Perdue extending the GOP's Gubernatorial losing streak to 5 consecutive election cycles.

Still, 2010 was the most detrimental year for us. We made a bad showing then and we'll be paying for that for the foreseeable future.

The trend though is working against the Republicans and we still have strong statewide candidates.

Also, we don't have Art Pope stuffing our candidates' pockets.

The Democrats are in control of North Carolina's governorship since 1993. Fatigue, anyone?

They were also in control of the Legislature since Reconstruction; I think NC voters regret putting the Republicans in the majority.

I like him, but I think he's too old (71 on election day). I wish they'd just clear the primary for Dalton.
