I wonder if Protestants view Mormonism like Catholics view Protestantism. This thread seems to point in that direction.

We don't and for several reasons, one there's several different version of Protestantism, there's not a central authority deciding inter-sectrial doctrine.
But also from a religious standpoint there's a giant difference. Protestants and Catholics use the same scriptures with the difference lying in the interpretation and the fact that protestants does not recognise the bishop of Rome as God's sole representant on Earth.
Mormons on the other hand use new scriptures, they have prophets and a radical different doctrine which lies outside the Nicene Creed. As such one of the few things Catholic and Protestant theologians agree on, is that they recognise each others as Christians (with a few groups as exceptions) and that Mormons (and Jehovah's Witnesses) are not.

Intolerance and religious bigotry are so ugly.

They led to the deaths of 6,000,000 Jews.
And hundreds of Mormons and possibly slightly more Gentiles in the 19th century... though it's fair to say that without Mountain Meadows, the Mormons' casualties would far exceed their detractors'.

And it's pretty clear the issue of past and possible future persecution is there, somewhere, deep in the Mormon cultural subconsciousness. Can't blame them, of course.

You know what's less normal than religious beliefs? Hint: Go ask Santorum.

Bigotry against Mormons is just as ugly as any other type of bigotry.

wat

No one's forcing Mormons to be Mormon (except other Mormons). Other types of bigotry are worse because you don't choose to be black, or Hispanic, or gay, or Jewish (culturally), or....
You no more choose to be culturally Jewish than you choose to be culturally Mormon. Perfectly comparable really.

These guys are bringing down religion in the public square faster than the atheists (see also Rick Perry's presidential "campaign")

Keep it up
